I have to powder the pill and force it down my dog's throat cus she's very smart... If I mix it into her food or something, she comes to know and refuses to eat it...
What about you?? Do you face the same problem or does ur dog take his/her medicine without a fuss?

Dear Francis Ferns , I understand as Vet that giving a pill to you dog can be tough job for you as he/she must be playing pranks with you and being a typical pet owner you can't be tough or strict with your pet.
Though I think your way of giving medication may be working for you and your dog but by doing so you may accidentally put the powder in to the pets airway which can be dangerous sometimes.
Alternately a pill wrapped in some aromatic sweet, that is hiding the pill in the centre of chocolate will make your pet to consume it very easily!
But the best and easiest thing would be having restrained your dog by some one securely you can use your left hand to lift his upper jaw .Now with the index finger and thumb please hold the pill and and with the remaining three fingers just push he tongue out while gently pressing the lower jaw downward and depoosit the pill at the base of the tongue and leave the lower jaw, you will see that dog has taken in the pill and having done so leave the upper jaw also ow. Please don't raise the head while doing so, as it may accidentally enter the airway of your dog. This can conveniently done by keeping the dogs head in normal position!
Well all the best and a nice time to you and your adorable pet! Thanks !

Place a little jam on the pill. Open dpgs mouth, place it as far back in the mouth as possible. Place hand around mouth, untill dog swallows..

I stick it into a piece of yummy meat. He eats it so fast, he doesn't even notice. I have a puppy too though so far I have never given her a pill so who knows if that will work with her as well? I am going to try though!

Hello Francis_ferns,
I know how slick a dog can be when it comes to swallow a pill. They can even separate the pill from the piece of food where you hide it, they can eat the treat and throw away the pill. I remember my previous dog used to do so.
Here's the trick I used to do to her, to make her swallow a pill:
I prepared a few bits of meat, small enough to be swallowed without being chewed but large enough to be able to hide the pill inside one of them.
So, let's say I had 5 pieces of meat, one of them hiding the pill.
I used to make her work for those treats. I made her sit or lay down, or salute for each of the little bits. Being in a hurry to execute the commands, she forgot to smell or chew the treats, so she swallowed them one by one - including the one hiding the pill.
Please try this trick with your dog, and come back to tell us the results.
I wish you good luck!

If your dog likes bread then put it in a piece of bread. But first give the dog a piece of bread without the pill as not to alarm it. The same goes with meat if this is the favorite food of your dog.

I agree with Arkao. I inserted a tablet on a piece chocolate cake for my dog when he had an accident. He took it easily and I didn't had any problem. :)

I know it is not easy to feed a dog a pill. We have to think out some tricks rather than feeding the pills by a force. In the past, we put the medicine into the bread or cake. And then it would be easier for our dog to accept to it. If the pill is bigger, perhaps you have to split it up and then insert it to the food. It may work.
I love China

You have to remember that your dog can smell that medicine. You are going to have to present it in a manner that your pup cannot refuse. A great way is to mix the powdered medicine in a bowl with one raw egg and about one cup of milk. Stir well, and hopefully your puppy will enjoy the "treat" he/she is getting without knowing about the medicine. Raw eggs just also happen to be healthy for your dog as well. If this doesn't work, things may get rough. Take the pup's jaw in your hands and drop in the pill whole. Then close his/her mouth and hold it shut while blowing on his/her nose, which will force a swallow. Good luck, and I hope your pup gets better soon.
