A 5 year old girl whom i met in our training immersion asked me " How can you enjoy life if you don't even have money for food?" This question stumped me and i was unable to answer the question so i was wondering if you were in my shoes what would your answer be? Geez.... why do kid's have to be smart?...now i was a bit embarassed because i was not able to give her a sensible answer( the only thing that i was able to answer the kid was um...............) Hope you can give me a good answer thanks!

If you are aware of Maslow's theory, you will know the basic need is body needs, and that is food. Indeed what the girl asked you is hard to answer because her basic needs are not met. However, turned the other way, you could also teach her that even with food, it doesn't mean a person knows how to enjoy life. A rich man with all the material things in the world could be bed-ridden. Do you think he enjoys life?
Enjoying life need not always be material. Otherwise, they will call it enjoy THINGS. I can watch a sunrise and enjoy life, breathe the fresh air and know I am alive. If the basic needs can be catered to, then enjoying life can be a personal choice. I don't think it is fair for a 5 year old girl to be worried about money for food if her parents can work to supply her. Don't make her work for it. She's too young and it will take the joy of life from her at such a tender age. If you can help her meet her basic needs, please do.

Yes indeed. Maslow's hierarchy of needs is very important for a person to enjoy his/her life. You will not enjoy life unless you meet all of those needs. It is very difficult to answer the child's question and the child is so clever that she was able to think that way. lol

You can enjoy life without having money for food because not all food costs money. There is wild food anywhere, and there are ways to get food without buying it. I'm not sure if the little girl would have been able to understand or accept that, so I'm not sure what I would have told her.

I guess it depends if the child is just asking the question, or really is going hungry herself. If she is just asking the question, then I would say something about how the love of family and friends, the beauty of nature, belief in a higher being, can all bring happiness, even in times of severe economic need. However, if this 5-year-old herself is going hungry, I would skip the theoretical answer and try and provide a tangible one instead--helping to feed the child and her family.

Smart little kid, indeed!I wouldnt know what to answer if i was asked that question.Food gives us life and without food we feel sick and weak.We cant get everything for free nowadays. To get a good meal, you have to pay in return. The little girl had her point.

the truth is, one needs time to think about the question before you could answer it. that's the reason why you weren't able to answer immediately. when i read your post, it also made me really ponder upon the question. the truth is, i think you can still enjoy life even if you don't have money to buy food. i agree to what the others stated in their opinions that there are food everywhere. but this idea likely fits the lifestyle of the past ages. but now, there are not enough resources to be seen in our surroundings. we need to work to live now. but for me, being with people you love and love you in return is one thing which make you be able to enjoy life somehow.
