I'm actually going to pass on a coupon for a free product

This would make people who know me well practically faint.
I got a coupon for a free noodle bowl at White Castle and was going to redeem it today--until I went to the Laughing Noodle website and saw the nutrition information! The sweet and sour noodle bowl has 1390 calories, 34 grams of fat, 2280 grams of sodium and a whopping 215 grams of carbs!
So I decided not to redeem this offer. That's more of everything than a person should eat in a day! Getting it for free doesn't make it more attractive since I read the info on it. I think this is the first time in my life that I've passed up something free so hell must've frozen over!
Have you ever passed up something free because it wasn't good for you? If you had this coupon would you get the noodle bowl?

Hiya dragon54u, Well I must say you do make me giggle, but seriously it is good to hear that there are other people in this world who will pass up food that does sound amazingly unhealthy. I do make my own chicken noodle soup, I am a great lover of noodles and yes, if you are going to skimp on the good stuff, as in chicken and veg and a decent broth then you will have to add huge doses of sodium to get it to taste of anything. I know it is difficult, especially at the moment to save money on food, but if we can save money by making more of our own food, it will be better for us. If that is the kind of rubbish that they are giving away for free, then count me out as well please.

I make most of my own food but I do like a break occasionally! Just not such an unhealthy one--I may as well pay someone to give me poison.
I'm seriously thinking of baking my own bread as well as doing most of my cooking from scratch. I looked at the ingredients on a loaf of bread recently and was surprised how long it was!

I have been very lazy recently, I used to bake all of my families bread, but then my husband went and got diabetes and had to cut down on his carbohydrates, and would complain if I made bread, as the smell of freshly made bread is so appetising and would always make his mouth water. I felt mean saying no, you can't have any. I do know what you mean about the long list of ingredients though, all that bread should have in it is flour, water, yeast and salt. You do not need all of those other things in your bread. There is nothing like being able to give your family a pot of home made soup and a loaf of freshly made bread and knowing that there are no added chemicals or preservatives in the food that you have served up.
In fact I am going to start a loaf off tonight, so thank you dragon, you are saving us some money. If you are going to start making your own bread the one thing that I can tell you is to add a little more liquid than the recipe tells you. It is true that the wetter the bread dough, the better the loaf.

In the three years I've been here I've only seen 1 homeless person. I know there are others because we have community efforts in place to help but apparently those programs are doing their jobs. The churches and the Salvation Army operate a shelter and food kitchen together and apparently do a great job.

HI,Dragon, I would skip it. Besides not being able to find a place to redeem it, even if the place was right next door, I would think that free would not be worth the damage to my health. At Christmas we visited my brother, and dad, and we did not do the traditional Christmas meal, we do that at Thanksgiving. I ate so much fatty, salty, in appropriate food that I was sick after we came home for several days. I gained 8 pounds as well. No free meal is worth that kind of feeling.

I've been watching what I eat for about a year, cutting back on salt, too. When I eat something like that I feel icky. I've been seriously dieting for two weeks and guess what? I gained 2 pounds!! This dish would really do some damage!

I have been trying to watch what I eat since I came back from seeing my brother, I wear a pedometer and have been walking a lot more, mostly inside. I am gaining as well. Hubby reminded me this morning that I am building muscle and that muscle weighs more than fat. He is very kind, can you tell?

I'm eating less and less processed crap since I decided to live healthier. I was surprised at how good I began to feel when I cooked more and stopped relying on canned and frozen foods. It's a lot more trouble but it's worth it.

Hello my dear dragon
Yes i have, free bibles from various sects :)) Thanks but no thanks :D
Almost 1400 calories ??? No thank you, they can eat it themselfs - with 1400 calories you eat a whole box of cheese+ 1 whole salami) and you still have about 400 calories not used :))

Yes, I can think of lots of better ways to spend those calories!
Those sects can be very annoying but most of them have good hearts.

I've had White Castle (burgers) ages ago, but since we don't have any WCs around here, I would have passed on the noodle bowl coupon. I think we can buy WC burgers in the grocery store, but frozen hamburgers just don't sound good. Now if we did have a WC, I might have gone for it, because I love sweet and sour anything. But now, if we did have a WC and based on what you've told us, I think I'd pass.
I haven't been trying to lose weight, but today I went to the doctor's and I'd lost a couple of pounds...since October. Not a lot, but I liked it.

Lucky you! I've been making a concerted effort to lose weight and I gained 2 pounds!
The ones in the store are good but not nearly as good as those fresh off the grill. Likewise, the already frozen ones you can buy at WC don't taste as good. If you ever want a crave case to take home and freeze as I used to do when I lived in the Southwest with no WC, have them cook them fresh, don't let them give you a pre-made case. I know, I used to work at WC back in the Stone Age!

I think I'll stick with just grilling fresh burgers and adding the hottest green chili I can find. Now I know I couldn't live without green chili. Another reason to stay in the SW; number two reason, no snow...
Good luck on your diet. The two pounds you gained and two more will be off in no time.

Of course I would pass on anything, free or not, that was detrimental to my health. The calories and sodium in that food is downright dangerous.

Once I decided to cut down on salt I was shocked at how much sodium is in most canned and frozen foods! I really watch it now and feel much better. That noodle bowl was so tempting but I left the coupon at home. I've just been out shopping in preparation for a huge winter storm. I thought about giving it to my skinny neighbor but why ruin someone else's health?

I think it depends on how delicious a Noodle Bowl is.
It sounds like something that would kill you if you ate it every day or even very often. But a lot of really tasty foods are like that. I know that it's a good thing that I don't have daily access to cheesecake, for instance.
I think it's okay to indulge now and again, especially if it's free.

I indulged yesterday when my dad and stepmom took me out to dinner. What a sinful and delicious chimichanga that was! You're right, there's nothing wrong with something like that if it's rare but I was astounded at just how bad the nutrition info was. It sounded like a fairly healthy meal at first!

Sometimes when I get chances to receive freebies or coupon, I might still ignore it, it depends if it is really necessary to me and whether I have to buy more than I need to get it.

Sometimes it's not worth it, that's true. Like a buy one get one free product that I never buy because it's so expensive. This freebie is too expensive to my health and eventually my wallet so I decided to pass!

HOLY COW. I can see why you passed that up. I'm sure your heart and your blood vessels thank you for that decision. I would pass on that too. That's way too much.. of unhealthiness. I think I've only passed on "free" things that have strings attached, such as free-trials that will bill your card after such adn such time passes and your trial ends (and stuff like that). I hate "free" stuff that isn't actually FREE in the end.

Hiya dragon,
Good for you dragon although it is a shame that being free it was loaded with all those not wanted ingredients in it.
You did very well to pass it up and also to read what it had got in it.
Sodium is way over the top as well as any of the other ingredients. Surely it must have tasted very nice but at a price.
Yes I have passed several of these special offers over seeing that they were full of grease you name it had all what it should not have in it.
I read all the labels now as they have some very tricky ingredients in them and it´s for every 100 grams not for the whole Packet.

Sometimes it's hard to read labels for me when they put them in grams, which they often do here in the U.S. If they'd say ounces, I'd be able to visualize better. 100 calories in an ounce isn't as good as 100 calories in 3 ounces, I get more of what I want in the latter.
I still wonder what that noodle bowl would have tasted like! But I made my own a few days ago for less than 400 calories and very little sodium or fat. It was delicious and good for me, too. I cook pretty well when I'm in the mood!

Hiya dragon,
Willing to bet that they tasted just great. But the ones that you have made are much better for you than those others anytime of the Day.
Less than 400 calories too. We have everything in grams here too and yes ounces is much easier it is confusing. Have you read the packets of Soups what they have in them you would be horrified like me I´ll bet.
They don´t really tell you anything that is easy to work out but you can bet that there is a load of salt and sodium in those Soups too.

Oh so glad you did look it up as to have to go out of your way to pick it up to find that the nutritional values would not be worth it after all.
Maybe give it away to someone who can use it and no I do not want it. LOL...

Ha! On the other side of the coupon was a free #1 sack meal--4 burgers, fries and pop. The burgers are so small that they are about 100 calories each and I got that. I made double burgers by throwing away two buns (the birds loved them!) and cut out about 160 calories that way. I also gave the birds half the fries--I had to have some of them! I did weaken and get Coke instead of water. I haven't had real Coke for years and it was a little bit of heaven! So all in all the meal was about 500 calories which was more than I wanted but oh, it tasted so GOOD!!! And my dogs loved the pickles!

Wow someone who actually check on the ingredient before redeeming a free gift! I think you are one of the few who do that.
I have passed on free gifts that are not worth while and I think we should just to make sure we practice our right to choose.

We do have a right to choose but we should do so with our eyes wide open. Sometimes that takes some work or research. I've been looking at labels for years, it's a good habit of mine and I always investigate "free" things. Although I knew this was not a scam because of the way I received the coupon (from the restaurant itself for some bad service) I wanted to make sure I would have no regrets should I redeem it. I'm glad I checked!
A lot of free things aren't worth it. You get what you pay for!

Good morning, dragon54u! AH the old adage " a minute in your mouth, forever on your hips!"
Living where there is NO fast food...FAST FOOD has been negligent in my diet for many, many years...and NOW (like today) when I take the Ferry ride (4 hours) to the nearest metropolis...I have to be so cautious of what I eat...as ALL forms of fast food, make me deathly ill...WHY, I do not know...but my body just rejects all of those chemicals, and rejects the fat of anything deep-fried (wish it would do-so with sugars--LOL)!! SO, yes I would not have redeemed the coupon, as I am an ardent label reader, and do have to watch my sodium consumption!
What I did learn about the dried soups, like Ramen, Siamin...scared the life out of me, is that the noodles don't stick together (ever notice that when cooking) not like other pastas...is that they are coated with wax, which of course, we know comes from the petroleum industry! Yikes! Have a great Monday! Cheers!

Wax?! OMG, that's disgusting.
We have all kinds of fast food here. In the U.S. they are everywhere and it takes real effort not to use them as convenience--and they taste so good!! But I only eat out about once a month because I've experienced something of what you do--feeling badly because of all the crap in the food. I cook everything from scratch, usually, and I'm healthier and feel better because of it. I avoid all the fat and chemicals in fast foods and I think the country would be much healthier without them. But people are busy and in a hurry especially when both parents work. It's a shame, processed and fast foods are ruining our children's health as well as the adults'.
