A man in South Carolina has been fined $3,200.00 for walking his leashless dog on a beach near his home during the off season. His fine originally was $1,072.00 until he refused to cooperate with the authorities by not giving them his personal information. At that time they wrote him 2 more tickets which ended up totaling approximately $3,200.00. The town offered to settle out of court for $500.00, but he refused saying he should NOT be fined at all. I can understand hius feelings yet feel maybe he should have settled with them!!! What are your thoughts on his actions???

I don't think he should've been fined either...this seems entirely ridiculous to me. I think fighting the fine would be the right thing to do, but I also don't imagine that Sout Caroline's state is so messed up that they would give a man a 3,200 dollar fine if he was ONLY walking him dog. I suspect there is a lot of missing information.

Actually, if you read it, they gave him a $1,072.00 fine until he got upset & refused to cooperate. At that point he was given 2 MORE tickets. I think dogs should be able to run free, but the law says he MUST be on a leash!!! How are they to enforce the law if they just let him go??? What if the dog had bitten a child running free????

I did read it. $1,072 dollars seems just as ridiculous to me. I don't think the probability of a dog that can walk alongside it's owner will chase a child down and bite him/her is very high. It just seems irrational to me. A warning probably would've sufficed.

I think this man should have accepted the $500 fine out of court. He should have obeyed the law to begin with and for them to offer him less to settle it, he should have gladly accepted. I think since he did not accept the lower amount, he should have to pay the original, raised full amount for being so dang stubborn about it.

I think he has gone waaay past stubborn!!! HE created the increase of the fine from $1,000 to $3,000. HE refused the $500 offer. HE is willing to pay the legal fees for his own stupidity. My guess is that the legal fees will be MUCH MORE than the fine. I don't know of many lawyers that work for less than $3,000. I guess the next news item will be that he plans on being his own attorney!!! When he loses, I think they need to increase his fine & make him pay the city's legal fees also!!!!

Assuming the town had a leash law, he broke it and should pay his fine. Leash laws are for the safety of both people and dogs although it's a shame that his dog can't frolic on the beach legally without a leash.
If he doesn't like the leash law he should not break it but fight to have it changed.

Very logical thoughts that he will probably wish he had thought of before this is over. Back when I lived in DC & owned a Doberman, I had a problem with the leash law. I worked 16 hours a day & my dog was stuck in a 2 bedroom apartment every weekday. Every Saturday I took him to the park so he could get some exercise & release some of that pent up energy he had. Back then, Dobermans were feared much like Pit Bulls are today. The law stated that he MUST be on a leash & I couldn't keep up with him when he was running. So, I bought a 20 foot leash. That way when we were near people, I could keep him right next to me. Then when we got out away from people, he could run around me as much as he wanted. If another dog or a human started approaching us, I could bring him in closer. I don't think he would have ever attacked anybody as he was a sweetheart, but I couldn't take that chance. PLUS, the law said he had to be on a leash when outside. When we sent swimming at the beach, he was always on his leash. As long as he got his exercise & I was with him, he was happy!!! So, I think this man had tons of options that he didn't explore the least of which was using his brain!!!!

I think that if this is a law in the city/town etc. that he should have just owned up to his wrongdoing and just paid the original fine. There is nothing good that comes from people that think that they are above the law. If you do something wrong then you have to face the consequences of your actions. I would really hate to see this guy raise kids.

I agree!!! It's the law in his town now & just because he could do it last year, it doesn't mean he can do it this year. Since everybody else managed to follow the new law, I don't understand why he thinks he's so special!!! If he was the ONLY one that didn't know about the law, I would think the town had slipped it in & not let anybody know. However, every pet owner in the town was obeying the law except this one guy. Personally, I think he has asked for everything he'll be getting!!!!

That is a whopper of a fine to have to pay just for walking your dog leashless on the beach. Since it was the off season and you had control of your dog, I think this punishment was a bit harsh.

Two thirds of the fine was for the owner having a big mouth & being disrespectful!!! I'm of the opinion that the city gave him a second chance & he still had his head stuck up his rear & refused to be agreeable!!! I feel sorry for the dog for having such a dumb master!!!!

I can't argue that point!!! Had he just given them his information the fine would have only been $1,072. Had he agreed to the settlement, he would only had to pay $500. Now he owes the $3,000 PLUS attorney fees!!! I guess he feels he's "showing" them!!!!

Well, maybe he should receive even a bigger fine until he understands that there are some rules he should respect;I think the dog was probably dangerous since the initial fine was quite big and I wouldn't want such a beast to bite me or anybody else on the beach simply because its master is stupid and doesn't understand the necessity of keeping his dog in leash.

It's a Jack Russell terrier-Labrador Retriever mix which shouldn't be an excessively large dog. And neither breed is known for being aggressive. The excessively large fine was due to the owner's own ignorance. A $1,000 fine is not what I would consider small, but it was tripled when he got mouthy & refused to cooperate with the authorities. Then the city offered to settle for half the original fine & he got arrogant & refused. I don't like the idea of dogs being kept on leashes, but sometimes it is just necessary!!! If their owners trained them properly from puppyhood, they would know how to act in social situations & they wouldn't be banished to the leash!!! Maybe in this situation, the dog should keep his master on a leash!!!!

Nope...Jack Russell terrier-Labrador retriever mix named Boo. I own 2 Black Labs & a Jack Russell Terrier & none of them has ever offered to bite anybody. They bark like they're going to eat you alive; but seem to be ALL bark & NO bite!!!
