Good day guys. I was wondering this morning on my way to work about a employed job applicant and a unemployed applicant. If youre the employer which of the two will you choose, both have experience in the job? I only want to know your opinion on this matter, pls defend your choice!!!!

Well, if there was no difference on the qualifications and experience and such, I would have to go with the unemployed applicant because since he is unemployed, I can probably get him/her for a little cheaper than the employed applicant. And plus, I would probably want to help out someone that is unemployed as opposed to someone that is employed. Of course, i would try to determine why the person is unemployed and for how long. This of course is hypethetical situation since employment cannot be determined by those two criteria. There is more to consider.

Thank you... I think youre right, it can be cheaper to hire an unemployed than a employed one. It is simply because unemployed dont have much choice, not like the employed applicant, he may not care if he will not get hired his still have his present job....

Yes, but of course you always want to know why the person is unemployed because he/she may simply be unemployable.

What a great question, I like it! I would look at all the benefits of hiring each applicant. I don't think I would base my decision on the current employment status. There is no way the two applicants have exactly the same on everything. I think it is smart to take the best applicant for the job. Qualifications are not just experience in the job. I would take whichever applicant interviews best and showed me they are the one I want working for me. I know my compassion side would want to hire the unemployed but my competitive side would make me look at all the details.

Hi jodylee, thank you for your reply. You are mainly on the technical side of the job, you prefer to focus on the qualifications that an applicant have.

I have been in the Human Resources department before and one of my responsibilities is to take interviews, assess them and make sure I am able to get the most qualified candidates. With your question and facts above, I would definitely choose the unemployed simply because he/she has no obligation and can work immediately. As long as the qualifications and experience are the same and you just need to weigh their availability to work immediately, the unemployed is the best to fit the position. If I would choose the employed, he/she has the obligation to either resign from his/her current work and choose the offer or not resign when he/she finds that your offer is not good. Hence, there will still be negotiations on his/her part. That would be a longer process. Unlike when you choose the unemployed, negotiation is lesser possible because your offer is an opportunity for him/her and high possibility to grab it. The unemployed one is more practical in terms of choosing a job.

Thank you for the insight. Maybe this is the reason why I find it hard to look for another job while presently employed. Now I feel a lot better coz Im already feeling that Im a big looser in finding another job, employers today give priority to unemployed to make fast process and less negotiation

this is one difficult for me to decide. if you will think about their personal motive, i think i will choose the unemployed. but if you will think about your business, i am sure i will choose who has better experience and knowledge of the job they are applying for.

Depending on their capacity to do the job and the result of the interview. Whoever has the more capacity to do the job whether they are currently employed or notshall be the person to be given the job.

Hi everyone! This question really makes me think. But I would like to ask, how can you say that the two applicants have the same experience if the other one is unemployed? I couldn't say that they have the same experience but maybe you mean the same skills and qualifications. I have been into the process of applying also and I have been given tests to see if I fit for the job. Being employed or unemployed will be an issue depending if the employer needs to hire an employee immediately.
