One time I went to visit a friend in jail.He was in the work release program and they let a limited amount of visitors come up to their quarters.I went in there,to the left was a fully furnished living room with a cable color tv.To the right was a dining room table,4 or 5 bookcases, full of books. And behind there was a pool table and the bathroom. Then there was their individual rooms. The rooms has a twin bed, closet area,a dresser and a desk and chair.Outside of that area was vending machine's.
In the regular jails and prison's,if people do work there, which is required, they get paid. When they get out of jail they get a new change of clothes and money. And if they do not have a place to go to,they put them up.But,if they remain in jail, long term, lets say over a year. They get to earn GEDS,college degrees or even write a book and earn money. They also get free medical there.
They get this because there are rights groups that say they deserve this.
Gee,I have never been arrested or even had a traffic ticket, but I can't afford 3 balanced meals a day,7 days a week.I cannot afford a small apartment.I am paying $948 a month for a room with a king sized bed,a small couch, dresser,tv with not many channels,a small kitchenette,a small closet and small bathroom.I also have to pay $169 a month for storage of my belongings. There is not enough room in here for me to have my books or crafts.I cannot afford to go to college.Iam a crime victim, that has left me with some handicapps and a widow.I have no medical.
So,why can't one of those groups come and say that I deserve that stuff?

It sounds like you need to go to jail. But the state get paid money for one every person that they have in Jail, thousands of dollar a year for each inmate. If there were no profit in sending people to jail trust me their will be no body in jail. How it is that the economy is bad out here but they still get their 3 meals, Ac, Heat, etc. Once a person is sent to prison they become property, you can actually invest and buy shares.

dfollin,
It sounds like the criminals have it made. It is almost enough to make me want to turn to a life of crime. But I wouldn't want to do that because it wouldn't be me. Like you, I struggle to survive. I paid $600 for a room in a motel for a month. I hope that it doesn't go up after winter is over. There is a tv and wireless internet so I can be on the computer at any time, but there is nothing special about this room. I guess I am just the victim of bad luck when it comes to my health. I wish the rights groups would find a way to help people like us who really don't do anything wrong but can't get ahead in the world either. Thanks for sharing!

I wish this hotel room was $600.We pay $948 every 30 days, that is one reason
why we can't move out because there were so many months with 31 days right now we would have to pay for 10 days at the regular rate, while we are waiting for my check. And the regular pate is $80-$90 a night plus 11% tax.Our tv does not get too many channels and if the wind blows we loose it.Oh yeah,I have to get a cell phone too because they say they allow local calls, but they count some local calls as long distance and then wanted the money then.Laundry cost's $4 a load and internet was a one time $4.99 charge.

I don't think that I could handle that! This place is about four miles out of town so I am pretty much on my own. It is a travel plaza along a freeway so I guess they can afford to let it go a little cheaper than they might otherwise. Are you in a big city? My brother found this place with a little research while I was still in the hospital. I guess they originally wanted $190/week but he talked them down to $600/month with the whole month paid up front (since I had the money) and they even threw in the fridge and microwave for free and the one cleaning lady offered to do my laundry, but I will see on that. I wish there were a way to get assistance with housing for people like us because I don't know what's going to happen after the first three months is up. I was able to cover this month. My nephew is paying for next month and then my sister is going to do the next month. After that, I am hoping that something else will come along financially. I don't know what will happen with the phone here. I hope that they don't want to charge me for that. Keep in touch!

I know what you mean about the jails. The local inmates here where I live just had a new jail built which caused everyone's taxes to go up. I have not seen the inside of it but I hear that it is beautiful. They have all the councelling and therapy they need...for free and even if they don't want it sometimes. They have great food, a library, dining room etc etc. They have all the things that you mention that many of us could not afford. In fact a lot of those guys could not afford them if they were leading a decent, clean and honest life. I know some of them who deliberately do something to land themselves there every winter. I wouldn't want them to be mistreated in anyway. Many of them are in there for non-violent crimes but I have to think that if they didn't make them so inviting that some of these guys might try harder to stay out of the place?? And you are very right. You were the victim of a crime....you deserve one of those groups to fight for you to have all that and still keep your freedom.

hi dfollin oh my It almost pays to go to jail with that kind of quarters. I am in a retirement center which takes all but 125 of my Social Security and SSI checks each month almost a 1000 dollars. so so food and o ne room shared with room mate. no amenities like cable televsion and computer etc. I have my own computer and monitor but no television. there are 90 people here we have two large screen tvs and one or tow people hog the remote control as we get no say in what is played on them.so if I was naughty and was put in prison I would have it better all around. wish some group would take pity on us retirees with very low funds too.
