The evils of Natural Flavor

Have you ever looked at the ingredients on a food that you're buying, and seen the term, "natural flavor" on it? If you look at loads of foods that you get, even moreso if they have any kind of flavor to them, like, "BBQ Chicken Potato Chips", you're going to see Natural Flavor on the ingredients. What does it mean? Well, the US regulations calls it (in short form); "The essential oil, extract, or distillate, or any product of roasting or heating, which contains the flavor derived from a spice, fruit, vegetable, yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf, meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products, whose primary function in food is flavoring rather then nutritional" That means, if you're having a granola bar that says, "Natural Flavor" on the ingredients, it could be something as wild as, melted cow brains, or shaved chicken feet, or, one of the worst, MSG from yeast extract or seaweed. I found out about this after I found myself allergic to MSG products, and I learned about the name "Natural Flavor" meaning that it can easily have MSG as part of it. This is really horrible stuff for our bodies, and we should not be eating it, but, the companies keep putting it in under this cheap, evil title. What can we do to stop companies from using it so often? How much do you eat things with these Natural Flavors?

I haven't ever bought the label "natural flavor" because I figured if they had to tell me about it it wasn't natural. I read all the ingredients and if I don't recognize an item or where it comes from I do not purchase the food! I don't know what we can do to stop companies from billing stuff as "natural" that are anything but natural! The only way to combat it is to not purchase it, that's the only thing they understand.

Thats what I've been going for, I actually found a list of items that have MSG in them, and keep away from all of those. I get products that have ingredients that I don't quite know, because sometimes they are just complex vitamins with wild names, and I'm ok with that. I'm 100% with you. I'm never going to buy items that have natural flavor to them, and hopefully, more and more people will catch on, leading more towards good food products that don't have it. Thanks a bunch for your comment!

hi mac and christoph and always tell people to be very careful of eating msg as they might be allergic to it and not know it till they almost die from the allergic shock reaction. I always ask at a Chinese restaurant now after almost dying from ingesting the stuff.

:O This is a huge shock to me! I guess it just really proves how sly they really are. If I were to see something that said "natural Flavour" (which I do)I would buy it because it sounds healthy. I guess the best one could do is just not buy those products and share the information with others like you have. Eventually if people care enough they could boycott it.

Thats what I really hope for... or for companies to just tell the people what the natural flavor is! If I don't know if it's really bad for you, or something I disagree with or not, then I can't do anything but leave it at the store. I'd rather actually know what I'm eating... Thanks for your comment!
