Nowadays, we can watch anything on the internet or download it on the internet or netflix etc. Besides, you can get a computer monitor screen that is as big as a television. So is television still necessary these days?
Do you prefer to have a television at home? or you prefer to watch anything you want on the internet?
We don't have a television at home, we can watch TV series on the internet, we have a thing called netflix that we can pick movies, cartoon, TV series, talk show etc on it.

Tv is not necessary, then again neither is the Internet really. I am canceling my cable soon due to the high cost, but it is not to go start watching tv shows on my computer, it is because out of all the channels there is nothing that ever brings anything I enjoy into my life. I usually just flip through them and whining that nothing is on.

Yea... we thought about getting cable at the beginning but it just costs so much, a lot of shows are just crappy and we don't even watch it that much if we bought it.

You can go delete your temporary internet files, it always saves a lot of memories there, go delete it regularly then you can have more free spces.

That's the ideal as monitors these days are just as good as the TV & so much cheaper. We can even get a TV tuner which is very cheap as well if we want to. But sad to say so, our broadband here is a joke & they charge ridiculously so I guess....hmmm...you get the picture? Hmm...of course you do because u have good internet speed. Haha!~

I think ours are the worse. If I'm not mistaken, UK charges about 15 pounds for 40mbps. 1 pound is like 4.94 Malaysian Ringgt. Let's just make it 5 for easy calculation. For RM75 one gets 40Mbps of speed!!! Guess how much 1Mbps here costs? MYR110! Tha's just SICK, as in REAL SICKWhat a RIP OFF!~!~ I'm using 2Mbps here & sometimes at night I only get around 0.13 Mbps. What a shame, we're still in stone age....

For me, not really. I watch TV on my computer because I can watch episodes consequetively (such as on Netflix Instant). Like right now I am watching all the seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (lol) and they have a lot of good ones on there too like Weeds, Veronica Mars, 30 Rock, Dexter, and so on. So I definitely get my money's worth with netflix. I still don't think a computer can replace a TV - it takes a long time to load (longer if your computer is slower) and the screen is obviously much smaller than a normal TV. I still prefer a normal TV, but I can't say I don't watch a lot of it on my computer. (PLUS - NO COMMERCIALS IS A PLUS!!)

In the past TV was essential if you wanted to get in touch with the world and see images from remote places or find out what was happening in the world, but now it's obvious that a TV is no longer indispensable;personally,I use it to watch sporting competitions and documentaries on the Discovery network;I hardly ever a movie on TV,especially because it is so often interrupted by commercias which are usually very annoying.Honestly,if it wasn't for soccer matches and thwe science and civilisation programs,I would throw away my TV.

That's a good question. Like you I belong to a DVD rental club; although in my case it's LoveFilm, rather than Netflix. I have a plan with them that enables me to watch a lot of movies. Until possibly only months ago, maybe a year, I can't remember, I'd watch my DVDs through a DVD player, and also sometimes videos too through a VCR, but my TV was faulty, and it was often hard to get a connection. Somehow I ended up watching the DVDs online instead, and in time came to prefer it. I came to use the TV less and less. Then I moved house; and in my new place, I never troubled to hook up the DVD and VHS players with the TV. In fact I'm not sure where my TV is right now; and the VHS player ended up with close relatives. The DVD player is stored somewhere. So, now my viewing pleasure is entirely restricted to movies on my PC, which is fine by me. And if I really want, I can watch TV online, although almost never do. So, for me, the TV is less necessary than it was, although I do have a tiny TV in my room, but it was making funny noises, so I disconnected it. I may replace the plug some day; but in the meantime, I'm fine with what I watch.

Not as much as it used to be. But that is probably why so many companies want you to bundle services so they keep afloat. I don't watch much tv, I mean it's on but it's usually the kids watching PBS Kids so no biggie and I ignore it quite often. The only thing I really watch anymore is Create channel & the news if that. As by the time dinner is done it's time for the news and baths & getting kids to go. So I agree if I have to watch something there is a way usually to see it online for free. Only problem I find is only finding clips and not episodes.

Modern technology has made so many new advances. It changes a lot of things that we do. Television could become unneccessary. a lot can be viewed online instead. Still, I like the tradition of vegging out in front of the TV!

We still have a television, a nice big flat screen. We still get antenna service, which allows my hubby to get his sports fix. We belong to netflix, and watch something every day on it. It is much more reasonable than a cable or satellite service. New shows, I just watch on the interwebs.

Yes TV is no necessary, but its also the point that every corner around the world doesnt have the fast internet speed to watch movies or any programme over net. I think this may be the reason to have a TV set to enjoy the services that are not available to the places where internet is not fast. TV is not Necessary for the developed country where facility are above excellence.

I like watching tv. Even though I can watch the same shows on the computer, I don't know, there's just something about watching a show on tv that makes it better. Also, as sad as this may be, watching television is the only thing that gets most of my family in a room together and talking.

Yes, I agree with you. Internet has become a very useful way for watching many things the TV shows. It is definitely an information highway of the time. I still have the TV at home, and once in a while I still do sit down in front of the TV. It still is helpful for relaxation and getting rid of the streses of the day after getting back home, after having spent the whole day on the internet.

Internet is so dominant now that we can find anything on it; having a TV at home is kinda something that we turn on when we come home as a habit.

I think tv is still necessary. If I'm at home and I want to relax, things in tv with its commercial is a fun way to spend some time. Though it's no doubt that the net and PCs plus handhelds that could be like tv is most common, still the comfort of television has no match.

It is beginning to come more with each passing year. I think television really started taking a hit with YouTube and other video sites, where it was easy to find decent quality episodes of certain television shows if you knew where to look. I really do think that television will still be around but there will be a small majority who grow tired of the dullness of television.
I don't really think television ratings have taken much of a hit. There are still people out there that don't feel all that much at ease with being on a computer and looking up thinks that way. Therefore, television will still have a place. At least for about fifty or a hundred more years. Then again, television did not completely kill radio, it just made it not as relevant.

the truth is, television is optional because not everyone can have one and it is not something which anyone can't live without. but compared to the internet, in regard to our country, they prefer televisions yet. not everyone in our country can afford to have computers as well as internet connections in their households. not everyone is knowledgeable in computers too.

Mermaidivy, you are right that the Internet can replace the Tv but don't you think that watching the news on the Tv is more secure than watching the news on the Net because it depends on the traffic. Also you can't watch your favourite film on the computer when you have problems with it (Trojan Horse, or kind of viruses). In my opinion it is better to have both of them-a computer and a television because of the safety.

If the television plan doens't charge so much, it's okay to keep them but these days, it's just so expensive and the shows are not even so interesting.
