Over the weekend I get a friend request. I get them once in awhile so no big deal. I checked it and I was really surprised who is was! MThe nephew, who is serving 32 years for a murder he commited at 17! He has been in prsion for 7 years now. He is 25 and now has a Facebook account! I don't know why the prison allowed this and how often he can use a computer! All this is so new I've not had time to find out more of this! So I added him as friend. I know he is friends with his brother, sister, mom and an aunt on his mom's side like I am,too! When this sinks in I plan to find out more about this! This is very a very interesting thing!

This is very interesting. I wouldn't think that a prison would let an inmate use a computer. Then again, it could very well be someone who either hacked into his account, or started a new one and is portraying to be your nephew. I highly doubt that they could give those kinds of accommodations to inmates, but you never know. I might just be wrong. Thanks. -Mysty

Yes, prisons do let prisoners use the Internet. There are sites on the Internet so that people can converse with prisoners. I think the Department of Prisons has prisoners across the fifty states. In spite of what they've done, many of them be they guilty or innocent, need someone to talk to.

Maybe Facebook needs expansion that's why they're including inmates in their millions of users. That's weird. Now, Facebook users really need to be careful on who they're adding. They might get abused there by rapists or pedofiles or what not.

What a crazy idea! Facebook is allowing this and promoting it? That is nuts! My nephew commited murder so I know of1 murderer on Facebook! I did look at his Facebook page. He has like 20 friends and 6 are relatives. I can tell he isn't on there alot and he left his address,at the prison,so people can write him. The address is ok but the rest isn't!

Well, I wouldn't say promoting it, but ignoring the complaints. They should take care of complaints like these or they'll run out of users.

My goodness, being in prison in the US is not different from being on the outside, isn't it? In my country, a prisoner is given only the bare minimum. In the US, it's so different. Prisoners have rights just like people on the outside. No wonder the crime rate in the US hasn't gone down.

I have heard of prisoners in the past being able to have access to computers and to write to people. Most of the times I heard this the prisoners weren't stopped and continued harressing people on the outside! I hope my nephew got this privelage for good behavior and is supervised! He can use a telephone but he has a time limit and his paretns have to pay his bill! That is fair!

Well, I didn't know that prisoners have access to social networks online. My greatest issue with this, honestly, is that I don't like my tax dollars being used to provide computers for prisoners. There are many hard working non-criminals who cannot afford a computer or internet access, so why should their tax dollars pay for the criminal element to have what they cannot have? Makes no sense to me, but somehow doesn't surprise me -- our tax dollars, once again, hard at work.

I know this is crazy! In Wisconsin we could use more prisons s because most are overcrowded or being close to it! I rememer looking into information on prisons in the state when my nephew was convicted. We pay millions of taxes to keep these prisoners fed, sheltered and be allowed in some cases, have use to the computers! If my nephew is supervised I see it as ok. If he isn't I would be pissed and look into it more to see if it can discontinued!

First, you must make sure that the owner of that account is your real nephew. There are many cases of people posing as other people so as to get the trust of friends and relatives of the person being impersonated. Also, I heard that there are prisoners that allow inmates to access the Internet.

I am pretty sure it is my nephew and not someone else. I can find out though. His mom, brother, sister and grandma are all on Facebook! They would know if it is him or not! I am going to chek into seeing if my nephew is supervisor and if good behavoir let him have interent access!

I find it extraordinary that the government of any country would allow a dangerous criminal to access the internet in any ways never mind exposing millions of innocent users to a potentially harmful influence. You were lucky you knew who he was and were able to comment but I think like some of the others commenting there is a much deeper issue here. Who else are they allowing to use sites like Facebook. I personally monitor what my younger children are exposed to on the internet but there are thousands of parents who do not. The correct action would be to raise this to your local government official as a complaint, you never know he may have accessed the internet by nefarious means. The other problem is why as tax payers we are paying for it!

It is crazy how much money is used in taxes to pay for prisoners! My nephew is in a Wisconsin prison and most of our prisons are overcrowded or close to it! We need more prisons in the furute but people don't want them near where they live! It is a crazy situation! My nephew probaly is supervised on the computer and did not set this account up without permission! I will see about talking to my younger brother, who is his dad about this! I would be pretty angry if the nephew isn't supervised! Then my comgressmen and senators know!

Wow...they get computers in prison now? That just seems wrong. They pretty much get all the comforts that most of us have to work hard for. No wonder so many of them get out and don't worry about going back in. is it possible that he is somehow sneaking access to one?

First off I knew my nephew has a prison job working on computers. He was a straight A student in high school,an Eagle Scout and had two college scholarships waiting for him before he was arrested. I still can't believe a smart young man like him is would do something so stupid! I am getting off track here! OOPS! I don't think my nephew is sneaking on the computer. I think he is supervised. At least one parent,my younger brother or his wife, visit him every weekend. I am sure my brother would be suspisious about the computer use if his son was not supervised!

Wow. I've never heard of this before. That seems crazy that they would let him access a computer. Nothing against your nephew but I've never heard of that. I know cell phones are banned from prison so I though a facebook would be too because you could access information from outside the prison. Huh. Very interesting!

I know my nephew has a prison job working on fixing computers. I never expected this! I checked out his Facebook page. He has his high school senior photo as his avater. It lists were he grew up and where he went to high school. There are no posts on his page and he has 20 friends. Six of them are relatives. He doeshas his prsion address on his page so ever wants to write him can. It looks like he can't be on it all the time! Did weird no less!

I think the prison should have limitations on the use of computers just like school do. Only certain web sites are allowed to be viewed and absolutely no Facebook, mypace, msn chat etc. All of these types are blocked automatically. I am up in the air about even letting prisoners USE the computer at all.

I checked my nephews Facebook page out. Since he set it up I have not seen him post anything. He used his high school senior photo as his avater and has 20 friends. About half of his freinds are relatives. I have a feeling he is not allowed on a computer very often. I don't see a problem if a prisoner is allow on one. As long as there is close supervison!

Don't get me wrong, i believe in mates need to socialize too but facebook? I'm not sure how people, especially parents who have children who use facebook would react upon knowing that inmates are on the site too. But then again, all sorts of people are on that site already so why not inmates? Apologies if i sound discriminating.

You are right! There are all kind of people on Facebook! The good, the bad and ugly! I am still in some shock my nephew in prison in on Facebook! I am pretty sure he is supervised and didn't do this without permission! Since he set up his account he has not been on there far as I know. He has only 20 friends for now. I know about half are relatives! I hope he is supervised! If he isn't something is wrong with the prison system!

That's really weird that they would let convicts use the internet I think they only let the good ones that have been on good behavior use them because that is just to risky to let them use the internet and get a facebook. Very interesting indeed maybe the prison thinks that they are very well protected and that nobody can break in or out. Still I don't think that convicts should be allowed to use the web it's really risky because some people that are in jail are out of it and they hope to get out to do more bad some do change, but not all that's the problem now a days.

My nephew is in a maxium high security prison. I know there are hardly any prisons who try to escape. Also my nephew commited murder and will be in prison for at least 25 more years for the crime! I would not doubt my nephew is allowed on the interent do to good behavior. He is smart man and I hope he is supervised on the computer! I should ask his mom or his dad,my younger brother, more about this!

I think this would help him to keep his sanity. The way things are these days, he might get out sooner than sentenced. I think I am like most people who feel people should be punished for what they do. But having worked in a halfway house prison, I've seen situations where it's better to have them be punished, but give them humanity as well. I've seen situations where I understand why they come out worse than they went in and thus are repeat offenders. Giving your nephew positive vibes might help him to turn himself around just in case he gets out early.

In the State, where I live and where my nephew is,(Wisconsin) he has to be in at least 32 years for his crime, which was murder, before he is up for parole. He has been in since he is 18.He is 25 now and will be 50 when the time comes for a change at parole! I hope this will be good for him! Before this he was only seeing his parents and other family members on weekends!

I am pretty sure my nephew has internet access on the computer for good behavior. It amazes me that prisoners are allowed on Facebook and MySpace! I think it is crazy but as long as they are supervised I see no harm! If my nephew isn't,whcih I can find out if he is or not,I will be angry! Prisoners should earn their prvileges! Not abuse them!

Just wonder how come he is allowed to use a computer or a smartphone while in prison? Is it a privilege or allowed by jail authorities?
