Misunderstood Breeds

My 19 year old niece, loves dogs and has some. And they are looking for a new home. But,they are finding that most of the places accept dogs, but only certain breeds. She did some research and found that there are some states that kill the dogs by the thousands of whatever breeds they dislike and outlaw in their town's(mostly rotweiler's).But,Michael Vick did not litterly kill the dogs or order they be put to death. And yes what he did was wrong, but he has admitted it,was punished for it and is now helping animal agencies, etc.
My niece had a seminar talking about misunderstood breeds and I told her that I would come, but if someone started talking trash about Michael Vick then I was leaving! The speakers were speaking about how a lot of breeds are misunderstood, that they are getting rid of their dog or putting it down because it's mean,it bit their child.Well what they are failing to see is the child's action toward the dog to cause the bit..
Ok,lets turn the tables a bit,if your child was just sitting there and
someone hit them,by accident or not and your child's spontanius reaction was to turn
around swinging and hit them, because they thought someone was hurting them would you want your child to be banned from the town or state,or perhaps even killed and put in a stack with the other dead children?
A speaker did end up saying that Michael Vick never said he was sorry and never did 1 day in jail! I left.

there is not always aggression on the part of the person being attacked. I was delivering a pizza one day to a house where there were some big dogs, including a rottweiler. There was no problem when I got out of the car because the people called their dogs in, but when I returned to the car, the people didn't go back outside and the dog bit me as I was getting into my car. I didn't do anything that should have caused that. I agree that sometimes an attack is provoked, but more than once I have been bitten just for being there. I think you were right to walk out since you said you would if certain things were said. Thanks for sharing this.

It could of been something as simple as what you were wearing, your after shave, the color of the car.My sister and brother-in-law had a dog, when my oldest son was about 8 or 9. We got out of the car the main door was open,I opened the storm door and yelled hello.Their dog came around the corner and he started growling at my son, luckily,my sister caught the dog.And she said to me that it was my son's jacket. We took the jacket off and I put it in the car,we went back in the house and then the dog was very friendly with my son and they played.I asked my sister about what was the problem with the jacket. She explained to me that the man that previously owned him wore a black leather jacket and he beat the dog!

I was wearing a dominoes pizza uniform, no perfume or anything like that. I had a red car. I know one of the times I got bit by a dog I was told that the dog didn't like people with hats (I was delivering a pizza that time too). I guess that just proves that it is dangerous to deliver pizzas in this world if there are dogs around.

I love dogs, had them pretty much my whole life. I live in Ontario which has a ban on Pit-bulls, yes these dogs can be aggressive but I feel it is all in the training and upbringing of the pet. Every breed has their own set of characteristic and if you are just getting a dog to have a dog than you are not being the responsible pet owner and learning how to care for your particular breed.
Some places in Ontario you can get away with it the law is not as strict and Some Vets will forge a paper or two if you have a pit-bull mixed with something to basically save this dogs life, but make sure that dog is on point. It is a 10 000 dollar fine and complete responsibility on owner no matter circumstances if a pit-bull or pit-bull mix would bite another person. I agree with you though that some reactions from a dog is a "natural reaction" and is not intended for harm.

yeah it is a hefty fine. They allowed owners to keep their dog if they had one at the time of ban but would have to be fixed. If i remember correctly the ban came into effect in 2005. It is sad because there are some responsible dog owners and unfortunete they had to put numerous dogs down when this ban came into effect if they were unable to find another place for the dogs. A dog will only be aggressive and unmanageable with no patients and effort.... I feel (unless maybe something medically wrong with them) They are animals after all.
We were looking for a boxer as well at first but not easy finding boxer puppies around here. I am happy with my German Sheppard Mix, she is a little over protective with me only though...I suffer from panic and anxiety disorder really bad and it seems she picks up on this big time when we are walking, she doesn't let anyone get near me, but anyone else can walk her and she is fine...
Hopefully they lift the ban one day but The people who dont own dogs and fear them are the ones making the laws. :(

since i was a kid, we had several dogs until now, all mix breeds but they are all well behaved. some say dogs can sense fear in people. i guess you just have to be friendly with them and they will do the same.
