Gifts for Friends

I have been out of my country for more than a year now and I finally get to go home by the end of March. As a custom in the Philippines, a person who works abroad should bring gifts for friends and family. I am lost... I don't know what to buy. There is the problem of thinking that they might not like what I am bringing because I can't buy expensive stuff. There is a budget restriction, of course. I hope you can help me out with this. Have you brought anything home for your friends that they particularly liked?

if i am your friend, i don't have to choose what you will give when you come home. for me, the important thing is you are home already. and if you really need to buy stuff for "pasalubong", i am sure those who will receive it will be very much happy cause it came from you.

that's why i avoid the question .."So what 'pasalubong' do you want? i made the mistake of asking my friend this question and she said she wants an aviator Rayban shades. imagine if all of them ask for the same thing, then i wont be able to afford the plane ticket to go home!

Hi sweetie. Depending on how many gifts you need to buy, i would say buy some good quality sweets that you don't get in the philippines and make nice like wrappings with it. It's the thought that count, not the gift or the cost. I don't know what they like actually. TATA.

Hi sweetie. Where is my vodka? It is missing and i know you took it. As for customs, they can buy their own damn sweets.

Funky. I'll take my pet snake with then. That ought to keep them quiet. As fir the rum, i hate the smell of it. Vodka with orange juice is fine, i think. Honestly i have never had vodka in my life.

Thanks for the suggestion Saphy. I need to fill a box 'Jumbo' box for this because I have a hoard of friends and cousins waiting for me. Sweets would be nice but I think only my mom and the other oldies(sorry for the term) would appreciate it if I bring home some sweetened dates. I'm afraid the Filipino tongue would not be able to appreciate other Middle Eastern food. Rich dear, you are right about Mr. Customs Inspector but I think i would need more than just sweets if I do encounter him.

I would just buy some small gifts from the country you are working in...something that it native to that country...if you were working in somewhere like Australia, i would say buy little koalas & kangaroos....Maybe even some postcards from the country you are working in showing some landmarks, etc. I hope this helps give you an idea.

You can bring some special food from the country where you're working. Then, you can make a small party for all your friends and relatives. I won't take much money.

I usually buy some food that is not available in our country for some of my friends, officemates and relatives. But for my close friends, I really think of things that will suit them. For example, one of my friends likes coffee. What I do is buy a beautiful coffee mug from that country as a gift. If you are budget conscious just try to incorporate somethings that is not usually seen here that can be brought there and at the same time think of somethings that will suit them or things that they can use everyday.

Anything that is given with sincerity is enough, it doesn't have to be expensive. It's the thought that counts.

Nothing beats chocolates and goodies as gifts. My brothers have been living abroad for the past five years and the gifts that they usually bring are food. It's very rare that they would go out of their way to buy bags or t-shirts or the latest gadgets. They also don't give money as gifts. I don't know about your family and friends, but we appreciate being together enjoying a home cooked meal than the gifts. But to be safe, chocolates will do. Just reserve some expensive gifts like perfume or something just in case.

Usually, when your budget is restricted, just buy lotions , lipsticks and skin soaps of brands which are not common here in the Philippines. You can also bring imported canned goods or maybe towels if you can afford them. Those things could really be appreciated. Filipinos are simple people and they love imported pasalubongs.

maybe you should buy stuffs that isnt available here in the phil. or maybe, you treat them when you get here by March, that would be better. anything you give to them would be appreciated because its from you. thats what counts.

I know selecting gift can be a really difficult job. Whenever I go back to my country, I take T-shirts, make-ups (like lip gloss, nail polish, mascara, eye-liner), cute key chains and chocolates. My friends love them. Maybe you should take stuffs like that too coz they aren't too expensive and useful at the same time.
