Basketball???

Basketball is our national sport. Why? I mean, why do we strive to excel in this sport when it's almost impossible for us to match up with the taller Americans or Europeans. Do we honestly think that we could win a game with an NBA all-star team? Don't get me wrong. I believe that someday, we might. But what I'm trying to say is that we Filipinos can excel in other sports that don't need 7-footers. We've proven ourselves in boxing, bowling, billiards... Lately, we've seen the potential of football (soccer). This is the world's number one sport, and we can excel in this. Don't you think so?

well, i am a big fan of basketball also and i am happy the way our national team is doing specially when recruit younger players and allotted more time to train this team. but when i spoke to my friends specially Europeans, they really see potential in football(soccer) for us filipinos. in football, height doesn't really matter, plus we have the speed and intelligent needed for the game, i think it's about time for us filipinos to try this game. who knows, we might be ending playing in world cup!

We Filipinos will excel. I believe that we have talents. We have everything and with combined potentials everyone will create a great impact on humanity. We do not need 7 footer-player to excel, what those players need are support in all aspect. Prayers, Moral, Financial etc..Filipinos are brilliant if given the opportunity to grow.

Hi, ice. Yeah, you're right. But I feel that we should focus on the sports that we can realistically win international competitions. Like soccer :)

You're right. We must focus on that first. Prioritize the sports where we have the possibility to win again and make another legacy..

Historically, basketball is not our national sport. It only became popular during the 70s because of the PBA and the easiness of playing the sport, wherein anybody can setup their own improvised courts in sidestreets and their favorite politicos often promises well-maintained basketball courts in local stadiums for them in exchange for their vote. But once upon a time...baseball is the most popular sport in the Philippines. I have read that we once have a national baseball team and there are provincial and city leagues. Babe Ruth, the legendary American hitter, once played in the Rizal Memorial Stadium when it was newly built, and he played some games as an honored visitor.

Hey, thanks for the info. I didn't know that :) I tried my hand in baseball when I was in high school and I liked it. But our school didn't have that large a playing area our sports program in high school focused on basketball.

I am with you in this one. You said it right. Boxing, bowling, blliards and football. I think the problem is that we want to be recognized in basketball in the same level as NBA is being recognized. But that's just really impossible. Nothing against our country, but let's face it, it's not gonna happen soon. Not in this lifetime. So you're right, why not focus on so much talents by our other athletes? It's a good thing that our very own Manny Pacquiao is giving attention to the problem of our athletes, especially in boxing. It's about time someone acts on it. Im not a very big sports fan but hey, I enjoy watching them and Im happy whenever victory is in our name.

I think financial support is the biggest thing lacking with our athletes. I've heard that a lot of the players of our football team had to pay for the expenses, including plane fare, when competing internationally.

Financial support is really a problem for many sports. As you said, your country treat basketball well, maybe it just because basketball has a much larger population of audience. It can bring money to those who run the game. That's a very important reason why so many sports are not treat well. Just because they are not so popular.

We have the same question. The funny thing is as we watch the Filipino basketball team compete outside the country, most of our Filipino players do not even look like Filipinos. Same thing to the new recognition we get in the field of soccer wherein a a team from our country showed the world what it can do. I have nothing against the players who look like foreigners because I know for sure that the Filipino blood runs through their veins, I just hope that they should at least know how to speak our language. The Philippine team does participate to a lot of sports internationally, sad part is they do not get the support they need. It seems like a Filipino first has to prove something to have some assistance from the country. You should first appear on the television before the person in charge does something. Hey, thanks to the media.

I guess we adapted, especially in basketball. Pure Filipino genes can't really produce tall people :) But you're right. As long as there is at least some trace of Filipino blood running through their veins, then they are Filipinos.

But surprisingly, the younger people today are way taller, even if both parents are entirely Filipino. The real color of Filipinos seem to fade even. Most of the Filipino teens are a little more lighter. Some health experts say that it is about the food that are available these days. Whatever the cause, it does make a lot of difference. I am not sure thou if it is good or not. For sure the improvement of height is but it would be scary to think of the future where you will no longer see the really physicality of a pure Filipino.

I suppose that sometimes, we forget why we invented things like this. Set aside the competitive aspect of any sport, and what you get is a whole lot of fun. It's not like we're meant to pit ourselves out with the best of the crowd, but it's finding a way to distract us from our stresses in life. And oh, I agree. Soccer, we can do quite naturally!

I think a lot of us have forgotten the essence of sports. People are so competitive nowadays. I'm guilty of that sometimes. When I'm watching my 7-year-old son playing football, I cheer his team on the sideline and really want them to win. Then I realize that these are kids. What's important is that they're having fun.

Actually, it's now arnis. It was passed into law on December 11, 2009. When I referred to basketball being a national sport, it was just in reference to its popularity in our country.

yeah^^,you got the point,., Filipinos are still insisting to play basketball even though they know to themselves that they are no match with those who are in western countries. because of their addiction to this sport, they tend to hire american people and make them change their citizenship into Filipino just to be the delicates of the Philippines for Basketball category. how pathetic. that's the fact. in order to join the NBA all-star, they become desperate of hiring other citizens. well, don't get me wrong of judging my fellow Filipinos but as what i've said, that's the mere fact. we insist to achieve one thing out of our abilities and possibilities. why not to focus in the area where we do really excel? i'm looking forward for that "football" team but i hope the next batch will be pure Filipinos. ^^

Yes, I hope so too. We have a very large pool of football players that we can tap, especially in the Visayas and Mindanao where football is more popular than here in Luzon.

That time will come when all our women or men will marry a caucasian and wait for their offsprings to grow up. At the rate we're going, maybe in 50 years more or less. We are good at the sport but our physical make up is the limiting factor. There's just no way Filipinos can grow taller than 6 feet, there are some but they are the exceptions. And you're right, there are other sports that we can excel where height isn't factor.

I think e Filipinos love basketball because we all love fun and excitement. You can see everybody playing the game, young and old, in every corner there's a basketball court, and as young as one year old, are gifted with a basketball. This is how we love the sport but as you have said, we excel in other sports and we must not just focus in one. I agree that we have a bright future in football, and hope we'll get global recognition in this sport!

I really hope so, too. I have to confess, I'm a football aficionado. I started playing competitive football when I was in grade school, thus the biasness. hehe :)

Look basketball is about physical and techincal abilities. That means that if you are above 2 meters high, and you have a right technique you will be able t become a great basketball player, even though if you are from a country that is not good at basketball.if you want to become the best, you should be physicolagically good also

I think sports is just a personal interest. There are so many kind of sports that all of them have their own groups. For basketball, of course tall guy have their advantages, but skill is also a very important thing. There are some smaller guys in NBA such like Webber.

Yes, that's true. But you have to combine those small guys with tall guys to have a very effective team.
