Probably it is a learned trait and genetic. It is the interaction of environment and genetics that determines how each individual turns out.
Probably there are genes for stupidity, normalacy, and intelligence. I suspect the genes for stupidity and intelligence are recessive. Normalacy is probably dominate.
High school biology can then help you work out all the possible results from these combinations of differing parents. It makes my head hurt to think about it.

Actually, the answers you seek about the stupid gene would be found in the research into mapping the human genome.
Incidently, some of the findings are so controvertial that scientists acquainted with them do not want be the ones to inform the public.
If you search out the published findings, be prepared for much double talk and the need to decipher those findings. The more controvertial the finding, the more the scientific double talk.
What are some of the controvertial findings? You won't hear it from me. I do not want to be called names either.

didn't I see you say somewhere that you have a degree in behavioral psychology? You should be well qualified to answer this one...lol

lol...ok, I won't pressure you then...but I will look into it...I just love deciphering scientific double-speak in my spare time...nothng in the world like it...

I think it must be genetic. After some of the posts I have read tonight, there is no way someone learned to be that stupid. It's in the genes. Careful who you procreate with.
Maybe there should be a mandatory I.Q. test before couples have children.

Thanx...I have preached that before...an IQ test for couples...it would definitely lessen the number of Darwin Awards given out every year...

I think it's a combination of learning and genetics. I don't believe a "stupid gene" exists, but rather it is based on the interplay of many genes as well as the early learning environment. Old-school psychology experiments have shown that there are certain events/learning obstacle that a child must conquer by a certain time in their development, or else they will permanently lose that ability. Language is the first that comes to mind. If a child does not learn the fundamentals by a certain age, ther simply will not develop much beyond that. This is probably true in intelligence (as we perceive it) and the ability to learn and think critically can either be fostered or stifled.

but was adam not created in the Image of God? If so then does that mean God wants us to all be inherently stupid?

It depends on a lot of factors... some genes like RNA does influence our appearances and maybe our intelligent in certain ways. Like in my family... all the kids are good in science, art and sport. But i guess enviroment also play a huge part too.

There is a good point in the environment thing...it always seems that kids raised by stupid parents tend to take on the stupidity as well...hence the question...

LOL. I've often wondered about it. My daughter has a best friend that is well, for lack of a better word, stupid. She practically lived at our house all through her high school years. The more I got to know this girl's mom, the more convinced I became that it had to be genetic. I mean the girl was so stupid and the mom was too. When a person is that stupid, they are too stupid to learn, so how could it be a learned trait?

She still amazes me and she's been on her own for several years now. LOL. Just a couple of years ago she glued her eyes shut with super glue thinking it was a bottle of Murine. haha!!! My argument is still for the stupid gene. Her dad is actually intelligent. The stupid gene came from her mom.

Well the argument is that if someone is brought up by stupid people, that maybe they just learned how to be stupid from being like their parents. Considering this girl was at your house more than her own, that theory won't hold water...

Hmmm..very interesting case study...Intelligent dad + Stupid Mom = Stupid daughter... I wonder if the genetics works the same as eye color?

Ohh that would explain a lot. It would also be a fun one to prove: You tell someone they have the stupid gene, and they will go through life believing that they're stupid, therefore doing stupid things, because they're "supposed" to. Self fulfilling prophecy. Just like if you tell a kid they're stupid, he might not try in school, get bad grades, and so prove he's stupid. Kind of. But really the idea of being born stupid is an interesting one. 0:

isn't that just like "If you think everyone else around you is weird, then you just might be the weird one"?

Yes of course there is, it has to be genetic right!? Some folks just can't learn new things. If not becasue of their genes then what?

I think I inherited that one too...ummm...I just forgot what I was about to say...ummm...I'll let you know what it was when it comes to mind again...

Hey look I gapped again, or had a brain fart, which ever one you prefer. Just a little hint, the forgetful gene works good, if your husband or wife ask you to do something and they think your losing it, then they will believe you when you say that you forgot, well it works for me anyway. Heck I get out of all kinds of $hit!

Then how else do we account for the number of stupid people in the world? And the fact that most of them are from families that are just as stupid as they are?
