I really have been thinking why do some people eat exotic foods. Like frogs, lizards and anything that is unusual. I sometimes think maybe it has a distinctive taste that they really crave for it. So, what do you think my fellow mylotters?

Hi Celeste, I think when we travel to a foreign land, we want to know the culture as well. If the natives like to eat frogs, then we will definitely want to try. For us Chinese, frog legs porridge is one of the delicacies. However, eating frogs is very common. Even the supermarkets here sell live, frozen or skinned frogs. It is not an exotic food for us. However, I draw a line as to what I want to eat. There are people eating ants in some parts of China. I cannot tolerate the idea. I think seeing a dish of fried ants is enough to kill my appetite. Those people can even eat rats, scorpions and other food. For them, it is normal, since most of them are farmers, or were farmers, in poor province. For me, it is hellish to even think about it.

Well, I definitely agree with you since we live far from each other and we do have different culture. I guess I am not that adventurous about food, I don't like eating out of the box I guess thats it. So it really is exotic for me.You mentioned that some people from your place eats rats and scorpion,I think that scorpions can cause toxins. Well, we live on our own.

The temperature is at 42°F actually : I can guarantee you that the frogs that one can hear near the river are not exotic . We eat green frogs and two species of snails in my country. Both are refined and appreciated dishes. Now that the Unesco said that French cooking is classified among the world inheritance of Humanity, you can't say that frogs and snails are exotic and unusual foods .

Maybe it's a tradition or native to their cuisine . Or they just want to explore unimaginable things and prove they're toughie and can do bizarre things for fun and plain enjoyment!

I eat food that I like, and among them are sea urchins, salamanders, frog legs, snakes, and Balut. I think for me it's not exotic, since I eat it, but some foreigners in our local lodge (KIWI LODGE) saw my cousins and I cook and eat a salamander, they were totally grossed out!!! We were like, why??

One factor would be curiosity. Most of us are very curious why some people are eating and claiming that it is very delicious. As long as it will not hurt my stomach, I would also like to try these exotic foods. :)

hahaha! i tasted frog(palakang bukid) and i love it. It tasted like chicken meat.... but i never try lizards... ewh!. Frog is common especially to Ilocanos(native Filipino). But not all frogs are safe to eat, only frog on rice fields i thinks is okay.
