What about your Vehicle (Car or Bike or SUV) Once The Petrol/Gas Is Finished?

Hi Friends, Many of us own bikes, or cars or even SUVs (and a few may be owning multiple vehicles too). These normally run on Petrol or Diesel or Gas. These are natural resources and expected to be finished soon (maybe about the next 20 years). With all the numbers of such vehicles already on roads and many many more to join, what would become of all these Vehicles? And More Specifically what do you plan or think to do with your owned vehicles? Share your views please Cheers, theSids.

Hello Sid, I have two bicycles at home, and I think I can make use of it. Moreover cycling is a good exercise for everybody. I hope new inventions will come and we will get alternative for these.

Boy, that's a tough one. I'm not really sure what I'm gonna do when the supply of petrol runs out. I just hope car manufacturers come up with vehicles that do not run on petrol. They have electric cars now but I don't think they're mass produced already. Bioethanol is also being used by mixing it with petrol. I hope 20 years from now, cars would be running on pure bioethanol fuel. And I hope they could convert the engines of our present vehicles to run on ethanol or electricity. 20 years, right? Well, I don't think the cars I own now would last for 20 years so before that event takes place, I would've sold my cars and bought an electric car.

The only problems with growing crops for fuel is the amount of fuel needed to produce those crops, and the fact that the amount of crop farming to satisfy our fuel requirements wouldn't leave much arable land for food crop production..not to mention the effect on food prices when food crops such as corn are being used for fuel production too..

Think that you need petrol or bio ethanol to produce bio ethanol . For many plants it is not a viable solution. By example you need more petrol to produce bio ethanol from sugar beets than you get bio ethanol but we are producing bio ethanol from sugar beets. Even if you can produce with success bio ethanol with some plants -- sugar cane, some oleaginous --, how will you feed the Earth in less than twenty years without this sugar and oil ? For me it is not a good idea, and when you said bio ethanol, I thought at some words : fashion, lobbying, corruption...

Good point..with all the talk about "Peak Oil" having been reached, and economies like that of China gearing up to enter the world marketplace with their car industry's products, hopefully at least some of this industry's output will be able to run on alternative fuels,or at least be able to be converted to run on them..The question for now is how long are we going to be able to afford petroleum based fuels once production starts to taper off? Will we stop being able to buy fuel before the Transport industry gives up on the ICE? If the crisis is going to be 20 years down the line,my current car is unlikely to be still around at that time...My previous car was used when I got it,and it was scrapped at around 10 years old..

Alternative fuel isn't a new idea..There were Electric cars back at the start of the Automobile age,and Diesel engines apparently were designed to work with many different fuels, including peanut oil..the popularity of petroleum products took over from the other contenders, bringing us where we are today. With Fuel shortages during WW2,Woodburning cars too were developed-apparently they were popular enough to cause deforestation in some parts of Europe..

My brain keeps telling me that the Petrol/Gas will never end. Although all the hype somehow I find it to be impossible. However there is a saying that says all good things come to end at some point so I will look at my ole trusting legs to get me from point A to point B.

Hello my dear friend! Nowadays, most people don't keep their cars longer than 5 years because of the maintenance cost. The older the car is the higher the maintenance cost is. So what they do is to trade-in their cars every 5 years or so in exchange for a new one. Car companies started manufacturing hybrid cars in anticipation that oil fuel will no longer be available in the future. So with this, i believe that the car companies would allow trading in of old model cars for the hybrid ones in the future and they can just recycle the old ones and turn them into hybrid cars. I would be doing the same with my cars in the future if oil fuel is no longer available.

Hi toni, Hey that is so very true and I should have kept it in mind before starting this.... People these days prefer a change in the model quite frequently and also the maintenance costs are a definite factor. I saw one of these hybrid cars in an advert a couple of days back where it was plugged to some electric wire and it was using it as a fuel. Also there are researches that if successful would allow cars to run on some gases too. Just worried abut the cars that could not be re-vamped and will fail to get to the newer version.

Hello Sids! You made me think, lol! Good thing we don't have a car now, well,we have one before but we sold it since my hubby is always not around and the car is just in the garage, lol! I don't know how to drive so there's no use for it. We just borrow our relative's car whenever hubby comes home. So more or less,if we still have it,I'll just put some stuffs inside the car to make use of its space, lol! And make the car just a collection and make it an antique! As of now,I'm enjoying my bike and that is also my way for exercising. See yah friend!

Most cars these days are manufactured to be recycled, so if fuel did run dry then we would see many of the parts in cars being used in the manufacture of other things. However, they are finding alternatives to oil-based fuels and I feel that it will be available sooner than we thing. _Derek

Hi derek Right that many of these modern day cars are manufactured to be recycled and personally I too wish that they found something as a substitute for fuels that would lessen the pollution and also control the speed of the things... There are so many people who drive rash

Good mornign, theSids, I have already jumped in on this discussion, and you can tell I am in love with my E-bike...and I could fill pages with the reasons why! We have single focused on transportation regarding decline in fuel production, but looking around the average household, and finding the base of so many of the products in it, just a few; carpets, any form of plastics, wall board, panelling, lotions, and on and on..are petroleum based! The list is never ending! I own two vehicles (4 wheel) one a 1979 Grand Marquis, which I am restoring..and a 1985 F250 work truck, that I use for hauling around my tiling/landscaping equipment, once the equipment is at the work site...I travel back and forth with my E-bike! I keep the older truck, as there is fewer electronics on it, and quite often I am able to analyze and repair myself....y'know, back to the basics! I keep it properly tuned up and fully maintained, to reduce as many emissions as I can! I find it interesting that people are convinced that newer vehicles are more recyclable....We have scrap metal people coming to this Island once a week, removing metal and automobiles...and twice they have stopped at my property asking if I would like/car truck removed, and they would pay me for it...YUP, pay me..as the quality of the metal in the vehicles is far superior to today's with far less processing (& disposing of plastic--seperating materials)! So you see, there is value in us vintages and classics...LOL! Cheers!

Part of me cannot wait for the day when there are no More cars on the road. Just imagine how peaceful it would be. My head tells me that having hot used to mass personal transportation we are not going to easily lose it though. I own a hybrid car and my "smug" factor is high. Old petrol/diesel vehicles will be turned into razor blades! Although modern cars are increasingly recyclable. What they cannot recycle they will no doubt dump in the sea and cause mass ocean pollution instead!

Hi p1kef1sh Somewhere within I too feel the same as you dear... there would be more safety and I would not keep tense when my wife is away on the roads... But that is a distant dream and I think it wont happen as they would find some way out for all the vehicles that are on the road...

Hopefully before the 20 yrs have passed they would have came up with another fuel type. Maybe then they will all stop fighting (wars) about the resorces that are about to be depleted. Im in denver, colorado somebody here has actually converted his auto so it runs off a fuel make from old oil the resturants are throwing out. Im sure there is plenty of that around. Also there is solar power that the electric companies dont want us to use.

I have thought of that too. It is a scary thought actually. I don't know what will come of all the vehicles that are on the roads now. I have actully considered tryong to get one of the battery powered cars but I have wanted to wait until they have perfected them more. Speed, miles per charge, stuff like that. They are very expensive though and it may be a while before I can get one.

I wish Aladdin will come up with his flying carpet that doesn't need any petrol . i couldn't imagine what will happen to the world without transportation. Have a great weekend dear

Hello thesids, I have read 50 years, because some petroleum resources are too expensive to be used today but will be in the future. Many solutions exist but are not used because they are not very practical : by example, during the second World War, no petrol was available for non military cars in my country, so people installed gasogen engines on their motor, working with wood or coal : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gasogene_engine Electric motors are already working. They have too few autonomy today -- about 100 kms --, but it can change with better batteries... Hydrogen motors are already working, the problem is the heavy cost of liquid hydrogen, but life gives a good link in box #1 to a new method of production. So we have not to worry about the end of petrol. Personally a witch broom or a flying carpet would be my preferred vehicles .

Hi topffer, Yes, the research is continuing and some of these are quite effective too... but I thought this to happen if we got delayed in the research. A witch broom - that would usher a new set of games / sports for sure - I would love that happen and seeing people fall while on a ride.... The carpets would make a fine choice for family picnics and business meetings

Hi AKP, This seems to be a better idea when they are become junk and garbage. A complete redesign would be better... I saw this kind of thing in some movies... And there is no need to change the addresses in the banks and other areas because they still will use your permanent address (and btw - how would you change you location if there was no fuel around? a Magic Wand or a Teleport thing?)

Now that it is revealed, who would be hired to pull?... And what would be the charges like? Per Km? or the entire distance? (Though I am not having any car or any four wheeler, and have no plans of buying one... just for my info as I would be writing a great blog post sometime soon on this)

I wish that it were possible to find an alternate fuel for these vehicles. Like you say, it is just a matter of time before the fossil fuels run out. I think that maybe by the time oil runs out, we may be smart enough to find an alternative fuel so that these vehicles can keep running. It might mean retrofitting the vehicles so that they can run on the alternate fuel, but I think it would be worth it. I don't own a vehicle at this time, but chances are that I will purchase a cheap car for transportation. Thanks for bringing this up.

Actually, were we legally able to drill on land as we used to, we'd have all the oil we needed. The artificial circumstance currently have--mostly using Mid-East oil, banning off-shore drilling & not allowing new refineries to be constructed--are what keeps oil so overpriced & precious. Drill here, drill now. Drill baby drill! Hello thesids, I wonder how did this question came to you? You worry for something that might happen in the far future. Do you know if we will live until then? Now, seriously speaking, I wouldn't worry about this matter. Electrical cars were produced but they are not so much promoted, as there are too many interests related to oil. If our old cars won't be good any more, recycling their components will be the best solution for them. But I think we will have the possibility to change their oil engines with electrical ones. But will you still want to ride your car then? Imagine mine will be a 25 years old car!

Hi inu, Not sure about you but I would love to live beyond that period and I think you too would love to be there. Your 25 year old car would be a vintage car by that time and definitely (if I had one of that category) I would have felt proud and quite possessive of it... The old me in that 25year old car with my grandchildren.... nostalgia for me.

Of course I'd love to live until then, but with this crisis, who knows who will survive? I don't use to make so long term plans, I think I'd waste my time as nobody knows what will happen in the next 20 years. I remember when I was a kid, my father used to say he would like to come to our working place as an old grandpa, with a white beard and a stick, to ask the porter how can he meet the general manager (which should have been either me or my brother ). And now what? There have been more than 30 years since then and he can't do what he planned to do. My brother establish himself in a foreign country and my father doesn't want to go visit him. He doesn't even want to visit me, as there are only 70 km between our towns.

Hi....After the recession started and oil prices skyrocketed to $150, many companies all over the world has started either fuel efficient or hybrid electric vehicles. So may be if we are becoming more aware, we can solve this problem.
