I play one instrument, the guitar. I think that the practice on one instrument is going to increase skill much better than spreading your energy around. I do want to learn to play other instruments like a dizi flute and a piano. I think in the end playing different instruments will broaden the musical perspective, leading to more creative musical creations.

yes of course, playing more instrument will increase your creativity in music, but masterized in one instrument is also needed to define that you are a great musician

hey guys
ive played guitar for 16 years, its practically another limb. i think its important that once you take up an instrument, never to quit. be inspired by many different types of music, and gain experiences from them. the more influences you have, the better creativity you will have writing your own material. Or, you can adapt different sounds/techniques when covering someone elses.
ive recently picked up drums, and piano. i would change this for the world. i love being a one-man-band. i have a home studio, and recording songs is my life.
but i do sometimes feel by rehearsing piano, and writing a song on it INSTEAD of guitar, does cause you to lag behind. I spent a couple of months where i didnt pick up the guitar, because i was too busy developing my piano playing. my guitar playing suffered for this.
i think if you want to be in a band, or a solo musician, the more strings to your bow the better. your influences and experience bounces off others, or indeed pushes you to break the boundaries of what may otherwise be quite a boring song on an acoustic.
people who only stick to one instrument though, end up being bloody brilliant at it!

Hi mcat,
Not for me. I'll stick to my old guitar. It is like an old friend in the night. Having a lot of interests may end up with nothing at all.

Have you ever heard the quote "Jack of All Trade Master of None?" I like that saying. For me it is better to know a lot of things than to focus on one aspects. Same with music.I think it is better to know many instruments and hone your skills to be best or good in each instruments that you are playing.

Hi! It is great if you know how to play more than one instrument.
I myself know how to play a bit of the piano, but I like to guitar more.
I actually agree that one focused on a certain type of instrument so that one will master it. As they say jack of all trades but a master of none. But if one can manage to master more than one instrument, why not right? :)

Even if you can play lot of instrument if you aren't good than it doesn't matter. like in football where they look for players with certain skill. A runner back should be fast, etc.
