I had a back pain in few days back after having a heavy cough. That is quite weird that coughing can caused back pain. But it really happened on me. I can hardly walk normal and whenever I tried to stand up, my back is so stiff and painful that I can hardly stand straight. I was really walk like an old man these few days.
It is now getting better and better after having a massage and a few days rest. At least now I can stand up quickly and walk like normal again.
It make me realized that when you are healthy, you will never know how painful it was when someone sick. It is so scary to have the feeling that I can't stand up anymore and have to lie on the bed for a long time.
Have you ever have got back pain before? How do you deal with it?

Hi yspmyl,
I have the back pain always but not serious. Sometimes my leg is giving much pain and it disappears after a few minutes. But when I felt the pain it is horrible and I can’t move for even a single step. I have not done any treatment so far. It is true, if we are healthy then everything is ok but once our health becomes worst means everything worst for us.
Take care of your back pain and get well completely.

Sreekala, when you get the leg pain, is it in the back of your lower leg or the bottom of your foot (like in the arch)? I used to get leg cramps in those places, and the quickest way to get rid of them (though hard to make yourself do) is to actually stand up and walk on it. It's -extremely- painful to do, but it usually works the cramp out much more quickly. Since I started drinking more water (and making sure I'm getting enough vitamins and minerals), I haven't had a leg cramp in over a year (closer to two or three years, in fact).

Hi Sreekala,
Most of the time when we having something that are not too serious, we tend to take it for granted and trying to ignore it, and when it became serious and noticeable, we will find it unbearable and started to feel regretted why did not take action in the first place. So, it is good for you to start to do something with your leg pain before it getting worst.
I just learn my lesson, I have delay my treatment for only a day and I could really feel the pain. And it took me 5 days to recover, and thanks God that now it is very much better. I can do my activity like usual again.

Yes I have definitely had back pain before. I think that it is one of the most painful things. If you can afford it, or if your insurance covers it, I recommend visiting a chiropractor. I really does help. Another thing that always helps is a massage. The way that I deal with and prevent back pain is by doing yoga. This will help loosen your back (as well as the rest of your body) and will prevent it from getting stiff in the future. I don't know if you get migraines, but if my neck is stiff, I get them real bad, so stretching will help with this as well.

Well I don't know if anyone has done any kind of study or anything, but I have noticed that there is a huge connection between back problems and migraines.
I recommend that every night (night is best because you won't be so stiff) you do some neck rolls.
•Sit with your legs crossed
•Bend head forward slowly
•Hold for a count of 10
•Slowly roll head to right, hold for 10
•Slowly roll head back, hold for 10
........etc.
You can do this as many times as you like. I usually do it 3 times each way.
Another pose I recommend is back stretch. This one will help your entire spine.
•Sit on floor with legs straight out
•Bring arms out overhead
•Slowly bend forward, keeping arms outstreched
•Continue bringing your hands to your knees, elbows out
•Draw torso down as far as possible (but not too far, you should feel a good stretch, but no pain)If you can go all the way that's great, but if you can only a little that's okay too.
•Hold posture for 20 seconds
•Repeat
Start with the knees and once that is easy, put your hands at your shins, then the ankles, then feet.
The pose that seems to be most helpful for my neck and back is the plough. Judging from the back pain you said you had, you will probably have some trouble at first with this one.

If this helps and you are interesting in learning more yoga, I recommend an old book called Richard Hittleman's Yoga 28 Day Exercise Plan. lol It's from 1969, but I still think it's amazing. It was my grandma's. That's how I was first introduced to yoga. The reason I recommend this book because it describes the poses very well with clear instruction and pictures; each lesson is about 30 minutes long; it tells you the sanskrit names of the poses; and it has "Thoughts of the day" at the end of each lesson, which describes the benefits of the poses, healthy lifestyle advice, etc.

I did not went to the chiropractor but I went to the traditional massager that help me pull my body and do a stretching for my whole body. It went from the neck to my toe. It really help and at least I am recovering now and although I still having a little bit of un-comfort but at least now I can resume I daily activities and do not need to lie down and rest for most of the time.
I really believe that yoga can really help in stretching and it is good for our body. That is what I plan to do after my back is totally recovered.

Yoga helps with preventing migraines? Okay, I am definitely adding more yoga to my life, since I've been getting migraines pretty frequently lately (usually starts out as a sinus headache, then turns into a migraine).

Yes, I had back pain before. It was for several months, very severe. I took pills recommended by my doctor. It relieved a bit, but didn't really go away. Then, a pharmasist at the store I used to go to suggested drinking cranberry juice. I took his suggestion and drank cranberry juice twice a day. Wow ! After a few day, the back pain was totally gone ! You might want to try that too.

So is your back pain realy make you can do anything or is the back pain that you have couldn't make you move ? if that so, maybe my sister only need to make her body move or she only need more exercise. And I think if you realy having back pain that bad or can make you can't move better you should go to see a doctor.

I think she doesn't really actually having a back pain, she just has a muscle pain. People who having real back pain can hardly stand up straight and shall never talk about jogging. Every move will let you feel so painful and the only thing can do is to lie down and rest.

Back pain is very painful and I experienced it too... many times already. I remember before when I was new in my work as a caregiver, I suffered a lot from back pain. Transferring my old man from wheel chair to bed and from bed to wheel chair manually without any knowledge how to do it make my muscle work forcefully and create back pain. As time goes by, I'm already 6 years working as a caregiver here, I've learned some techniques how to transfer him from chair to bed and vice versa even he's more than 100 kilogram and I'm just 64 kilogram in weight. If sometimes i felt back pain, I just put hot towel or something like hot water in a bottle and do some hot compress to ease the pain.

Wow! that is really amazing that you can carry a man over 100kg without hurting yourself. I doubt I can do the same.
You are right, hot compress can really ease the pain and it definitely can help. I use a oilmen which will make me feel hot at the place I applied and that is quite similar to the hot compress method. So, I believe your methods work too.

Hi. yspmyl. I have back pain too. I have an Herniated Disc in my back right now. It causes me pain especially when I sleep on my stomach. And it hurts when I get up in the mornings after laying in the bed. It can be painful. Sometimes, I have to sit up for a while until the pain subsides. It is like this when I stand up for a long time. I will have to sit down to ease my back pain.

I did have the back pain twice before and I understand the experience you have.
The faster way for me to recover was by having an injection and scrubbed with some massage oil which was given by the doctor.
I felt pain at my back because I twisted my body too hard.
For you, I advise you to go for the medical check up to ensure no other sickness you have.

Hi. Sorry for the late response. I have had chronic back pain for the past few years. It had become so worse after the birth of my daughter that I had muscle spasms and had to walk like an old woman, with a bend. Later I took treatment for that, physiotheraphy and exercises and hot packs at home and now am able to live with minimum amount of pain. It still does pain but it is bearable now. The key is not to sit too long and keep moving and exercising and most importantly control the weight gain. Hope you are ok now. But there are some things which we have to accept that will stay with us for our lifetime and this is one of those - for me.

I was almost like in your case but my back pain is due to the muscle stranded. The first few days I was really walk like an old man that I cannot stand straight, you can imagine how painful it is.
I think back pain is hard to be cure, and if you are not taking care of it, it will strike again one day. After this incident, I will do more exercise to keep my lower abdomens muscle stronger so that it will not happen again, it is really unbearable.

I think you must have got your back injured sometime ago, that is why you keep getting back pain again and again. Oilmen or herbal can help to reduce the pain for temporary, if you want it to be cure for 100%, you need to really take care of the back and do some lower abs muscles exercise to strengthen your back, I learn this from a book which said that you need to have a strong lower abs muscles to help you back bone to support your upper body, if your muscle is not strong enough, your back bone will suffer. If you like ginger, you can try to consume it about 2 gram in weight in raw everyday, it will help to get rid of the pain.

Yes I have had back pain, or I should say severe back pain for the last three years or so....AND YOU ARE NOT CRAZY having pain from coughing cause I have had that too. When you strain your back you can always try ice or heat. And you could alter them too, ten min on and ten min off kind of thing.
Without taking the strong stuff, narcotics, you can always try some motrin. That has saved me plenty of times. Back pain is not something you will ever want to deal with and I never realized how debilitating it could be til it happened to me.
I now have had a couple surgeries and am worse now than before my last surgery. Not sure what we are gonna do next but in the meantime, I hope you never have to experience it again!!!!

Wow! You went for surgery for your back pain, are you having slip disc? Having back pain will be the nightmare for me when I have got it. I really can't do anything at all when I have got it, I can't even walk properly but have to walk like an old man.
But at least now it is much better than the first day I got it, so I will really take care of it and i do not want it to happens again. No more back pain for me....it is so terrible.

hi yspmyl oh yes about six months ago I was exercising sitting on the edge of bed at night so as not to wake my roomie.I guess somehow I got
a muscle spasm in my left side of my hip. I could not straighten up
and oh how I yelled just walking to the bathroom. So I called down and told them I had a bad muscle knot and literally could not walk anywhere.they brought up my medications,I took 3 ibuprofen tablets and just sat straight and finally after more pain killer the pain stopped and while I was sore I did not have that stabbing pain that would not let me even walk without wanting to scream. So I managed to get downstairs here at G old Crest retirement center for my lunch and dinner. I got a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for breakfast but I hurt so bad for while I could not even eat that.

Hi Hatley,
I know how your feeling at that moment. I feel so hopeless when I can hardly walk on my own and when I trying to stand up, I cannot even stand straight. It was really painful that I have to lie down most of the time. And luckily after having a few days rest, I am now on the recovering stage. Hopefully it will be totally recover in few more days.
Hope that you are always healthy!

Yeah, I know how you feel, as recommended by one of the mylotter, it is better for your to consult the Chiropractor.
Oh yeah, I have heard about taking ginger can help to reduce the back or muscle pain, you just need to consume a small portion of raw ginger (about 2-5g)everyday. It can helps to ease your back pain. Ginger is something good to heat up your body and it is no harm trying. But what you need to bear with is the smell is really not that nice and it is spicy.

I have back pain on and off fairly regularly. It flares up if I overdo it exercising OR if I'm too sedentary for a few days, or sometimes if I'm stressed or sleep awkwardly on it. The best for me is gentle stretching, gentle exercise/frequent breaks through the day to walk around and get a little stretch. Massage is wonderful but I can't always afford it. My doctor also recommended taking Aleve or other anti-inflammatories for it consistently for a few days in a row when it's flaring up. I hope you feel better, it really can be awful!
Now I have a lot less pain than I used to due to focusing on exercise to strengthen the abs and muscles around my back, that was actually a better cure than chiro, physical therapy, and regular doctors combined!

Yes, you are right, I just read a book about how to have a pain free back and the book mentioned that if you wanted to be free from back pain, you will need to do more stretching to strengthen your abs and back muscles. Because those muscles will help you to reduce the burden of you back bone and hence you can have a pain free back if you keep exercise those muscles.
I am getting much better each day and soon to recover. I did some massaging and applied oilmen to relieve the pain. It helps.

Back pain experienced in bouts of cough means that your back muscles are helping you in breathing (inhaling and exhaling). The diaphragm which helps in breathing have difficulty in performing its function since you have phlegm in your lungs. This causes other muscles to do extra job so you can breathe easily.

At first it does sound strange that coughing caused back pain, but when you think about it, it makes a bit of sense. Coughing a lot (as with a heavy cough) can cause muscle strain, and it could have strained a back muscle as well. I had a bad cough a few years back, kept putting off a doctor visit, since I thought it was just a cold. I finally broke down and went to the doctor when I started having major pains in my side and chest every time I coughed. It turned out that I had bronchitis, and with all the coughing, I'd pulled a muscle!
Still, whatever caused it, the folks here have lots of great advice, especially about the gentle stretching, and trying not to sit at the computer -too- much. I'm glad to hear your back is starting to feel better finally, and hope it continues to improve quickly.

Yes, you are right, I never though of coughing can actually cause back pain until I got it myself. Its not only pulled my muscles but it also have pulled one of my nerve that connect to my back. I guess, the nerve must have been twisted.
After learning from a book called Pain Free Back, I learn a few methods to strengthen my abs and back muscle and hopefully it will help since as mention by the book, back pain normally caused by a week back or lower back muscles, everyone need a strong lower abs muscles to help your back born to support your body weight. So, it is important to have a strong and healthy abs muscles.
I am still recovering and I will stand up and walk after sitting on the chair for some time. Actually sitting long hour on the chair will also affect your back pain.
