The whole point of the film is that it WAS a love story that just happened to be set on the Titanic. That being the case, the story of the Titanic itself and of it's descovery, was just a background to that story.
It was not, and was not intended to be, a documentary about the loss of the ship and the far reaching consequences of the sinking on maritime safety laws.

I love the graphics in the movie , but personally I think the plot could have been better. But still , it didn't stop me watching more than once because of the different sets of people I had to "accompany" because they had wanted to watch. There were rumors of Titanic 2 which I think was just some stuff made up .. it would have been pretty impossible to create a sequel in my opinion. But who knows, ha!

It wasn't intended to be a documentary, but I would have enjoyed it more if the one romance didn't take front and center. There were so many stories that could have been told about the people on board, but of course Hollywood makes more money from love stories, especially if they're tragedies. I put off even seeing it for several years, partly because I don't particularly like Leonardo di Caprio. All people talked about was the love story and that's not the kind of movie I like. I was glad I finally saw it, even though I knew that a lot of the story wasn't accurate. The sets and costumes were magnificent and the special effects were stunning, so I enjoyed most of it.

Well, since it is a movie and not a documentary I suppose it focusing on a particular relationship made it more interesting for those who are not history buffs.
It is possible though that such a movie might make some curious as to the actual events and inspire them to do some research to expand their knowledge and understanding of the event.
Things such as the ship Titanic was made with materials that were less than the plans called for, that the double hull was eliminated to cut costs etc...along with such interesting things as the chandelier in the main hall, the serving places, how they kept things from falling off shelves when the ship hit rough water etc.
A great many people have become interested in a historical event due to a 'story' told, so maybe this is one of those kinds of stories.
