Here lately I've been noticing a writing habit I have that I'm trying to correct myself on . Sometimes when there is a sentence that I need to write the word (that) on I want to write the word (that) twice. I noticed recently that other people do that to. example: I had to to show her that that was the one I wanted, instead of I had to show her that was the one I wanted.

Oh yes..that is a common thing. I think that we write sometimes the way we talk..that might be part of it.

Thank you for commenting. That makes a lot of sense. I probably do talk like that is why I write like that. LOL.

Thank you for commenting. I didn't really notice myself doing it until recently even though I know I've always done it. No one has told me about it before either.I don't really care either. No one is perfect.

I shouldn't worry about it too much. The English language allows that that 'that' that comes first refers to that which you mentioned first, while that 'that' that comes second is a different part of speech from that 'that' that comes first. You can see some other mind-twisting multiple occurrences here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_while_John_had_had_had_had_had_had_had_had_had_had_had_a_better_effect_on_the_teacher My favourite (though a somewhat contrived one) is the apparently grammaticality valid: "Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffalo_buffalo_Buffalo_buffalo_buffalo_buffalo_Buffalo_buffalo

I find myself doing that myself. I usually see it and change it because it doesn't sound right to me. Another problem that bothers me sometimes is when I want to say that I couldn't get ahold of you. I see that and change it because it sounds backward. I change it to reach and it sounds better to me.

Thank you for commenting. I change it too after I type it because the that that doesn't sound right. Yeah I do that too on I couldn't get a hold of you, reach does sound better.

Maybe it has to do with way too fast thinking and we are somehow not coordinating the two. As many of us work simultaneously on several sites and work them all in between. I just guessing, as it has happened to me in one point or other.

I'm not an english expert but I see nothing wrong with it, its perfectly correct. The second 'that' was pointing out to specify something, otherwise you'd need to put a comma in between 'her' and 'that'. The second 'that' is not only correct but necessary. Many writers do 'that'.
