I was thinking how it would be cool if kids can go to factories for field trips. I know it would probably be too expensive or hazardous but I think it would be great if we can go to see how things are made. Then maybe people might not take things for granted easily. Have you been to a factory before? Which kinds have you gone to? I've been to a print shop before and it was so interesting! I'd like to go to different kinds in the future too..

My grandson loves to watch a show on cable that is about just that. How It Is Made I think. We don't have many factories around here so we haven't. My grandson gets to go to very few actually. He is in the second grade so maybe next year. I think it would be very thought provoking though for kids to go and see how things they take for granted are actually made.

Yes, it is always interesting. He takes things apart and puts them back together. Is always making something out of straws and styro-foams cups.

I've done a few factory tours. There used to be one south of Las Vegas - the marshmallow factory. Don't think any of the kids' field trips ahve been factories, but that would be great.

I don't know how things are today, but when my children were small, about 40 years ago most factorys had tours set up for the public. This was a great source of PR and we saw everything from metal detecters to woolen products being made. I think I would call the headquarters and ask for tours.

Metal detectors? I bet the kids got really excited to see that made.

I think that is a wonderful idea as instead of and or also career days they should hold something like that. It would certainly give kids a feel of what it is like from the inside as oppose to people telling them. Great idea!

Yes, I actually never really experienced career day, even though I see it on TV a lot. That would have been good too or going to your parent's work day so that we can see our parents at our best.

When I worked for a local teen center we took our kids on all types of trips. Since they were teenagers I think we were able to get away with more than younger groups. We took them to some factories, mainly a food production factory and another local factory that makes shoes. A few of the kids ended up getting summer jobs, the ones that were 18. Some of them were bored but for the most part the kids just enjoyed getting out of the house, lol.

You got to get them summer jobs at those factories? That's cool and beneficial.

Field trip to the Pizza factory - Children learning how Greenwich pizza is produced.
My kid's school just went recently on a field trip to a Pizza pie outlet called Greenwich, a leading pizza outlet chain in our country, they were not only shown how pizzas were made, they actually made their own pizza and got to eat what they produced.

A lot of factories have tour programs, you would just need to check and see if the particular factory you would like to visit offers that. I know that a lot of the kids in Pennsylvania went to the Crayola factory, and also to Bethlehem, Pa of course, where Peeps are born! yes the marshmellow goodies. The Harley-Davidson plant also puts on tours of their factory. These tours can be fun as well as educational. Good luck.
