It happened in South India a place called Thrissur. Soumya, a 23-year-old woman, who was thrown out of a running train and raped last week, died at Thrissur Medical College hospital here Sunday after battling for life for the last six days. According to police, the woman was found lying unconscious with serious head injuries on the tracks between Vallathol Nagar and Shornur Railway station (in South India) at 9.30 on February 1. Later, the man who allegedly pushed her down from the women's compartment of train, Govindachamy, was arrested. This brutality has shocked the people now it seems much of women hesitates to travel in trains without proper security.

I've read about this incident in the newspaper and it has really affected me. More than a decade ago, I would have to travel from Karnataka to Kerala by train. I would have classmates accompanying me upto Shornur and then I would be on my own all the way to Thiruvananthapuram. I always preferred the general compartment to the ladies only then. Even then if the general compartment didn't have many people, I would be scared. I always avoid travelling alone in a train...somehow I feel safer in a bus.
This news has shocked me and I feel strongly for that young woman. I can't even begin to imagine what she went through:(
I have a strong urge to do something violent to Govindachamy...that woman has lost her life!!!

Oh yes...we can't trust newspaper reports. I don't understand why we wait for such incidents to happen before anyone TRIES to take action. Shouldn't a ladies compartment be safe for ladies in the first place? Maybe CCTV cameras would work in nabbing a culprit AFTER the deed is done. But how can we avoid it?

It is still not known who is the real culprit, we cannot trust the newspaper stories, even the police if they do not get the real culprit, they will catch someone and put the blame on him make stories to public and newspapers. Moreover the unfortunately the girl has been expired, if she could give more details it would be have been better for police.

geez, that's plain monstrous. I don't know what kind of people have the heart stone cold enough to do such horrifying acts. At least I hope justice will serve him as he deserves!

They should station some polices on train, or plain cloth police along the train station to monitor criminal activities. I hate to read some news like that, and it was just too horrible to read such incidents. I hope that they will arrest all of those bad guys. They should deserve worst.

Hi there,
This is very true and sad plight of women. I belong to Bihar where these cases usually happen. When I was a kid, I have encountered many eve teasers while travelling in train. It is good that he is arrested and he should be given harsh punishment for doing such a crime

Hello Sham,
I read about the news earlier which was very unfortunate. According to reports the culprit is a criminal and handicapped too. The incident happened in the lady's compartment where women are supposed to get in. It shows the lack of security in trains and I think railway police are not doing their work properly.
One of my classmates who is in railway police, told me that they are deputing only two police personnel for one train and which is not at all sufficient. Now there is no point of blaming anybody the lost is for that girl’s family. The need of the hour is, to prevent any such incident in future and ensure the safety of women in train. Delegate more personnel for women’s compartment especially in the evening and morning times will be highly appreciable. I really wish this incident will open the eye of the railway police and they will keep more vigil on their duty.
