Most of us have pets at certain times in our lives.
It does not matter whether we have a dog, a cat, a rabbit, hamsters, birds, chickens or fish, the ownership of pets certainly comes with duties and responsibilities.
Some of us owned pets when we were young, and we could still recall how our negligence of the duties caused the death of the pet.
For example, overfeeding the goldfish. The goldfish turned upside down, had difficulty breathing, and died.
Or not taking care of the dog properly, and it got lost.
The most important lesson in having pet is ultimately to cope with death.
Do you think having pet makes you a better person? How does having a pet change your life for better or for worse?

I don't know if having pets makes me a better person, but my three Chihuahuas certainly make my life better. I really enjoy having them around and spending time with them. They are really good friends to me, and I look forward to each day with them.

These are not the tiny Chihuahuas. These weigh 8-10 pounds each, so they are a little too big to fit into my pocket, but they are fun to have around LOL

haha Goldeneagle, having three chihuahuas certainly makes life better.
You do not even need to bring the dogs out for a walk.
Just put them into your pocket, and you are ready to go out.
I wonder how you prevent your dogs from biting guests. They are small yet very aggressive.
I think they do not know they are the smallest dogs on Earth, so they behave as if they own everything.

Hi Hagirl, I think nobody dares to bully you now, since you have a good and strong protector in the form of your pet.
It is good to find the perfect pet, otherwise life is even more miserable.
I think in many cases, pets help us to see life from a different perspective, so that we can live a more meaningful life.

no think it does not make you a better person if you have pets since even evil people have pets like the people that used their dogs to kill people. But I do think pets to help you to live longer since you always have some one to talk to since your dog has not choice but to lisen as you vent your stress.

haha Dav20b, the dog probably thinks about food while we rant on and on about our problems.
I do not know whether pets can prolong life span or not. After all, those who live to a hundred plus do not always have pets.
Hardly anyone trains their dogs to kill people.
Most people train their dogs to guard the house.
I think some pet dogs are really useless, since they hide under the bed when they are scared.

My answer is yes and no.
Yes because if you have a pet, you become more friendly, and you enjoy sharing time with your pet, so you'll enjoy sharing time with other people. Also, a pet is the best company when you're sad and you don't want anybody to bother you.
And no because I think is the same if you have a pet or a human best friend. If you have a human best friend(real friend), so you won't need a pet to be friendly. Also, if you're sad, you'll talk to your friend about it.
The most of cases, a pet is needed, I personally need a pet, because I'm feeling alone now.

Hi Ricextreme, not many people get a pet because they are lonely.
Some people have more than enough work, and a large family to care for, yet they want a pet.
There is a difference in having a pet and talking to a best friend.
Most of us tend to rush for work, rush home, and rush for everything.
Sometimes, seeing the cat relax on the sofa is just enough to remind us that life is more than rushing to work or getting the housework done.
I think that is the most important point about having a pet.

Hi Ricextreme, I live in an apartment building too.
I have a fish tank with a big fish inside. That fish is a predator fish, supposed to eat live food.
However, I kept it from young, and fed it with pellets. When I bought it in May last year, it was less than three inches, now already more than one feet.
Recently I got a few feeder catfish. Those are meant for feeding the big fish. I cannot bear the idea of feeding the cute little catfish to the big fish, so I keep them in a pail of water, and feed them everyday.
They are so cute. The way they fight for food really makes us appreciate how fortunate we are.
I think you can just go to the fish shop, and ask to buy those feeder guppies or other feeder fish.
These fish are very cheap, since they are doomed from the start.
You can just get an old, unused pail, and keep the fish. Just buy the small fish food to feed them.
Remember to change water every day.
For my catfish, i change all the water, since these creatures really turn the clear water into blackish water.
Then I use the water to water the plants.
for other fish, just change 30% of the water every day.

Personally I think pets are done for us to care them, to feel accompanied, and to share time with them, and I think that people don't need pets if they have friends, and can share enough time with their friends.
I'd like to have a pet, but in the apartments building I live, dogs are not permitted, and my mom don't like cats, so I don't have a pet. I was thinking in buying a little turtle.

I really think it does. It is because pets are there and can train you how to take care of things out of love. Therefore, i always advise friends to have pets at home if they have kids. These pets will teach them how to be expressive with love, and they will be trained to take care of the pets out of love. That is a very good training.

Definetly yes, pets can give us a relationship almost like a human friend in certain cases. They also turn us more responsible, wich can give us a little bit of training to parenthood.
There are severall researchs that proof that specialy in childhood, chidrens who had pets, bond easier and are more responsible in certain ways that children who didn't have the oportunity of having a pet as a companion.

Hi Ishrael, I think in some ways having a pet is better than having possessive friends.
Some friends literally demand your attention.
They cannot understand that you have your own life to live.
Pets are very different. They only demand food, water and your love, as in hugging them or petting them.

I think that having a pet can change your life for the better, and can have so much influence on a child as they grow together. The child learns how to be more tolerant, more responsible, how to take care of a living thing, how to share, how to love and how to cry.
If we are going through a tough time and feel like we need to cry we often find it hard to do in front of another humans, but we usually find we can let ourselves go with the family pet - crying and talking to it - and get great comfort by doing so.
Having a pet teaches us so many things about life; I couldn't imagine life without one.

hi scheng1 I think having pets and children do make you a heck of a
better person as you learn to put others first and you are not as selfish as you have a little person of your own flesh and blood to care for and be there for all his or her life,.then you have pets that give you all their love very unselfishly. yes they do make us better people as we learn from pets and children as we teach we also are learning. these are the best learning experiences in the world, caring and sharing and being compassionate.

Hi Hatley, I agree with you.
Having pets is one of the blessing in life. Pets do not demand anything more than food and water plus some petting from the owners.
I have a fish swimming leisurely in the tank.
That is the most undemanding pet, since no need to bring for a walk or even hug the pet.

Hi Jdyrj, I doubt there are many people who hate pets.
Most people love animals to a certain extent, but they do not like the responsibility of caring for the pets.
Since I live in an apartment, having a dog is a cruelty. Most dogs need a big space to run about.
So I get myself a fish, and take care of it.

Hi Jdyrj, too bad my family does not like dogs or cats at home.
I would love a small dog, such as a Chihuahua very much.
I had several small pets before, such as the button quails, hamsters and cats.
Those cats were stray cats, but we sort of adopt them.
They do not enter the house, just wait quietly outside for us to give them fish or other cat food.

I actually not quite sure about it...does it make me a better person because I have a pet? some of my friends don't have pets and they are very unfriendly towards mine...I don't think they are bad people [ otherwise I would not have them as friends]but I think it's an ingrained thing since childhood their families never had pets so they grew up with the concept that pets are dirty and bring deceases and so on...so these people are actually scare of pets! in a way I think they are a bit selfish as well they do not want their lives tied up because of a pet. To me my life is much better because of my pets I would not have it otherwise, lets put it this way if someone who came to live in my place did ask me your pets or me? really who do you think would be out of the door quick enough?

Hi Alottodo, I like to have pets at home too.
I think pets can help us to see things from different perspective, and to make us happy and relaxed.
i wonder why anyone thinks that pets are dirty, since we are the ones creating so much rubbish and damage the Earth.
At least cats can clean themselves just by licking all over, but we cannot clean ourselves without the artificial help such as shower cream, soap, and shampoo and conditioner.

Hello scheng,
Yes, I agree with you on this. Having pets certainly change the way you look into things and you are less ignorant about things and you start taking care of each and everything related to the pet you own!
Well, Basically we even start taking the responsibility of things related to your pet. Suddenly we find ourselves taking everything seriously and everything is thought and acted.
It does help us grow as a better human.
Cheers!
Happy Mylotting!

Hi Shrijsr, I agree with you that having a pet is not just about responsibility and a sense of duty.
Most pet owners experience a change in viewpoint about life and living.
After all, why are we so stressed up? Our pets are living happily and sleeping all the time.
I think the best change comes when we start to see things from the perspective of our pets.

Hi Raj, actually I think pets can change our personality, not just helping us develop certain qualities like kindness, caring etc.
Those who keep dogs tend to have similar qualities as their dogs.
The quiet owner will have a quiet dog.
When kids have dogs, the dogs tend to make as much noise as the kids.

Hi Raj, I mean the pets, especially the dogs, can reflect our personality.
Some people like big and quiet dogs. Some people like the cute and small dog breeds like those toy dogs.
There are even studies about the differences between a dog owner and a cat owner.
Many people like an aquarium at home, because they can learn to quiet down, just relax and watch the fish swimming leisurely.
I think pet ownership can help us change our character traits to a certain extent.

I don't think having pets makes you a better person but it is definitely like what you said on being a lot of responsibility. That's why we really need to think about what the responsibility is before we get a pet. If we think we can deal with all of the responsibility before we get them.
@scheng1 (24649)

Hi Margeryann, another factor is the space in the house or garden.
For me, living in a high rise apartment rules out many pets.
The government does not allow big dogs, and I do not like small dogs. I think small dogs are too emotional.
I cannot keep hens or ducks at home too.
The only pet that is perfect for apartment is the aquarium fish.

Hi Lottielulu, I agree, the only time when pets cause anxiety is when they refuse to eat or get sick.
I think having a sick pet is one of the moment when we feel so helpless.
After all, we can take medications when we suffer from fever or running nose.
In most cases, we do not know what medications for the pets, and do not know what to do other than visit the vet or seek help online.

Hey :) Yeah i understand what you mean. I know of people that have got a pet dog when they have lost their partner for company, and it was extremely difficult for them when their pet got ill because they really depended on them. Even when a pet gets ill you can still provide comfort, and hopefully most of the time they'll get better :) Also, the good times when your pet is healthy always make getting through the difficult times worth it.

Hi Lottielulu, I can understand the pain of seeing the pet falls sick.
Most of us experienced that when we were young, with our sick goldfish or guppies or whatever else.
The worst thing about being young and ignorant was that we always did the wrong thing.
When the fish was sick, instead of changing water, we stupid kids started to throw in more pellets.
I think every child must have a pet, so that he can learn about caring for pets, and learning about life.

Pets are expensive nowadays for feeding and vets bills etc. but I think it is great for kids to grow up with them, as it teaches them how to be responsible for the life and well-being of another creature. They are also good for older people who find themselves alone. Parents need to have compassion too and know how to look after the pet which they would have done as children themselves. Those who sell pets I think need to make sure that the people who are buying them, will love and care for them. That is important as there is much cruelty in the world today and it's mostly down to people who have not learned to love and be compasionate towards animals. _Derek

Hi Derek, I think that accounts for the popularity of having an aquarium at home. It is the cheapest form of pet ownership.
In order to save money, I recycle the water from the aquarium, and uses it to flush toilet and water the plants.
Other than the cost of fish pellets, which is very cheap, and the cost of filtering the water, there is hardly any additional cost.
No need to bring the sick fish to the vet even.

Hi Scheng1 I love your post! I think they help us size life. Size time. Having a pet sensibilizes us. I have had 5 cats, turtles, birds, fishes. Actually I have a cat, 3 dogs, 2 turtles, 3 fishes, and 15 birds. Kids get involved in taking care of them. They make us happy when we are sad. They remember me life goes on no matter what problems there are. They don´t argue as people do. They have clear and pure eyes. Hehe... they are tender, they are intelligent. I tried to live without pets, because it was "easier and cheaper" but I just simply couldn´t. Blessings!... Dainy

Wow Dainy, your house is a mini zoo!
I think with a few quails, a few hens, that will make it a very self-sustained household.
The only birds I ever had was the button quails.
Fortunately they could live every happily in the cage everyday, and they could not fly, so the risk of them wanting to escape was minimized.
Just a few days ago, I bought some catfish.
Those were meant as feeders to feed the bigger fish.
I feel it is rather cruel to feed the live fish to the bigger fish, so I keep them in a pail of water, and feed them every day.
I like the way they fight for food. It makes me realize how precious food is, and how fortunate we are that we do not need to fight so vigorously for three square meals a day.

It might make you a better person, because you care about someone and that is one of the most important things in life.It is scientifically proven that if you have a pet and you if you are returning from work but you are furious and the pet comes to you you start play with it and it takes all that bad energy away from you.
@scheng1 (24649)

9 Feb 11
Hi Elena, there is no need to have scientific proven records to show the benefits of having pets.
Any pet owner will tell you about it.
The only exception is when the kitten or puppy is very young, and untrained.
The kitten or puppy may break fragile items, chew the shoes and do all kind of destructive things.

I believe having pets doesn't necessarily make you better person. But it show that you a caring person. I think the way you treat your pets is indicative of how you will treat other people. My pets are my kids so they pretty much tolerate my husband and I living here. I think if they could figure out how to get the food out of the closet we would be homeless. (HA, HA)

Haha SSwallace, sometimes I have a feeling that pets look down on us, and think we are stupid.
That is the feeling I get when I am around cats.
Cats are notoriously arrogant, and seem to look down on everyone.
Dogs are not too bad. They are watchful and protective, and know how to read moods of the owners and their friends.

I strongly believe that having a pet makes us a better person. It brings vast changes in our behavior and it enhances the feeling of 'sympathy' in our lives and reduces cruelty of nature. Most important is that it makes us aware of our responsibilities and it makes us understand that we can't take any thing for granted. Now coming to the funny point of having a dog as a pet... it helps us feel stronger and confident in a dispute or fight with anyone, just unchain your dog and bully your opponent with your dog :) :)

Hi Havocspark, having a pet does bring changes to our outlook in life and our behavior as well.
I think only a dog will fight for you!
That remind me of our childhood, when we threw stones at the neighbor dogs, and then expect our dog to protect us.
However, when it comes to feeding times, all dogs eat happily together.
Cats wont help the owners fight. They just look at you, then close their eyes, and sleep.

having a pet is somehow being in a great responsibility of taking good care of God's beautiful creatoin. an animal is not just an animal if we just try to understand the kind of behaviour they have. let's pick a dog as our example here, a dog is an animal but not just an animal, why? because in the sense that a dog has also it's intellect, skills and it's own way of living..a dog can identify his master so easy. a dog knows where or when to pee. and a dog knows how to find food for itself or for its family- if it has. so even if animals has a lower intellect that we human has still they are creations of God that also needs our care and love.

Hi Jiecharlesplaza, even when we have two dogs, we do not just view them as dogs. We will view them as two separate personalities.
The funny thing about pet ownership is that pet can take after the personality of the owner.
Friendly household has friendly dogs.
Those owners who are living in a quarrelsome family have dogs that snarl and bark at everyone.
