How come people cut off their hair when something happens?

I've got a friend recently cut off her very very long hair becauase she broke up with her boyfriend. It is a big change for her for sure. I never cut off my long hair because of anything.
Is it kind of a way that people to relieve the stress to feel better?
I think I would miss my hair so much if I had to have my hair cut...
Have you ever done that before?

Yeah this happened to me in high school. I'm a guy and I was a little depressed through school and had hair down to my mid back. I always had a tie to put it back and one day one of my friends thats a girl needed a tie so she took mine. I hadn't let it down in probably six months. After that I got home and knew right then that it was gone. I was done with covering up so I just shaved it down to a crew cut. People at school were like o my god, I never knew what you really looked like, and I got really positive feedback. It was the end of an era and the beginning of a new positive life for me.

I have very long hair and would not dream of doing that even if it meant I wanted a change. Many women and men do this after a break up as they want some sort of change. Some go through great lengths trying to prove they are going to be a different person.
I have a friend has done this where as not only did she cut her long hair, she dye it blond and began to wear green contact lenses. I find that although we want to start fresh and new we should not make drastic changes as we want to remain true to ourselves and not try to prove we are who we are not.
I too would miss my long hair and can't imagine doing that.

I do know what you mean as mine is down to my waist. I get upset if the trim is more then 1/2 inch. LOL...

Oh yeah, I have cut my hair for that reason. But as one of your replies said, I did it because it was a new start, a fresh look, and let go of the past. And I think if it makes a person feel better about themselves then do it. I have had my hair from very long to very short and everywhere in between. The way I look at it is, its just hair, if ya don't like the new look, it'll grow back.

although I have a very long hair, if I have a little cut off, I would feel like it takes forever to grow back..

I have got my long(ish) hair cut many times. I think the first time I was about 6th grade and I went from having hair about half way down my back to having very short hair. In 2003, I got my hair cut really short from being shoulder length because I didn't want it falling out during chemo. It turned out I could have waited a month or more because it wasn't until after my third treatment that I started losing my hair at all. I got my hair cut again last fall for no particular reason. I will probably look into getting my hair cut really short again in the near future because it looks like I will be going into chemo again. Not quite the same kind of reasons you talk about, but they are mine. Thanks for bringing up the topic.

Chemo is short for chemotherapy. The put chemicals into the body to kill cancer cells. The worst part about it is that it makes your hair fall out most of the time. The last time it took about two months, but it did happen. I am told it will probably be about the same this time.

It is true for me.
Whenever something bad or stressful happened, I always take it aginst my hair. Poor thing.. But it is not because I hate it but because it is the only way to stay longer in the parlor and forget what made me pissed for a bit longer time.
When I get out of the parlor , it is not only that I feel light headed, literally but also I feel light in general. Gone is the stress as well as the bad mood and I got a new look.

Yes, in my countries girls also cut their hairs when they break up with their boy friend. I guess they need a change of appearance in trying to forget their boyfriends.
Do you know that in Bali, a man cannot cut his hair during his wife pregnancy. So, you can tell when a man's wife is pregnant by seeing how long he does not cut his hair.

Right, I think it's more a girl thing. You seldom hear guys shave skinhead because of things happen.

The good thing about hair is that ...IT GROWS BACK!!! yes, it's true, it actually grows again.
When I left my last partner it was a new life for me. He loved my long hair. I had had it long for many years. One day, about 1 week after I left him, I was in my new place and I grabbed a phone book and started ringing round for appointments. I had my hair cut off that very day without a second thought. It was heavenly. We have very hot summers here and having short hair was so much more sensible.
I felt so good with all the compliments and for taking back control of my life. When you live with someone you share your life with them; you make allowances for them and you compromise with them. Having all the control back is a great feeling...I guess because he was making wrong choices and I was having to accept them when I didn't want to.
Now, I get my hair all cut off when it just gets too much to handle and when it's too hot. If I could afford how much the hairdressers charge more often I would get it cut more often I think.

When I want a change in my life, the fastest and most physically obvious choice is to change my hairstyle. For me, it's a symbol of letting go of old baggage and moving on to a more optimistic future. I had long hair my entire life and I decided to cut it to my chin to remind myself that I was letting go of the past and starting over. When my boyfriend of three years broke up with me, I permed my hair to remind myself that I was going to try new things and not look back. It's a way to reinvent yourself.

I think it is just a matter of habit, and there is no real reason behind. There are times when a person is in trouble, he tends to get annoyed fast. It is therefore annoying for him to have his long hair swaying in front of his face at times, so he would choose to have a haircut always.

Maybe your friend doesn't want to that guy to see the old her,or maybe she's aware that she had broken up with her bf all because of her fault,so she hated herself.I always have my hair cut by myself, but I have never cut my hair for some special reason before.

I have observed that guys are the ones who usually do this. Maybe the reason is that girls are more expressive of their feelings than guys does. So guys tend to look for other ways to express their emotions, and cutting their hair is the most common way of doing this. I don't understand either why cutting hair is the most common.

Yeah that hapoend. SH*T HAPPEND. But mostly on teenagers they are in a stage where they make their character and they think that after something "BIG" happends like break up or something like that they should change themselves. I don't think that this is a good thing to do because after you will say -WHAT HAVE I DONE- so the best thing you should do is to relax do your favourite hobby and (after a break up) start a new relationship (MOVE ON).
HOPE this HELPS!!!! ?

yup it's one avenue to relieve stress... in a way. i guess pampering oneself by either getting a new hairstyle will somehow alleviate stress. new look, new life?
i dont get a haircut when i'm stressed, rather i'd go shop (very dangerous to my wallet!) or hang out with girlfriends or have my nails done or get a shiatsu massage.

Yes, I have done that, cutting my hair after a painful career change. I did that so that I cold show my protest, that I am rebelling and somewhat not happy. I did made me feel good in some way. I felt liberated . I felt I have my message sent through. A kind of relief from stress. Then I started growing it again cause the pain is all gone!

Yeah,it happened to me before, too.I think people do this because it's a way to relieve themselves when something extremely bad happened,by changing their look they can tell themselves:"Everything will be OKay,all the bad things will go away, and I am not the same as before anyway."

Sometimes people cut their hair as a scapegoat for a certain bad things that has happened in their life. For some people, it is a way to express that he/she is now ready to live a new beginning.
