To those who frequently travels, what is your longest time in travel may it be by bus, train or airplane? That also includes your lay overs and delays. Was there a time that your journey to your destination is longer than your actual stay in that place? Please share your experiences and tips on what to do while in transit so as not to bore yourself to death especially during delays.

hi! most of the travels i had that really took a long time are those with flight delays, cancelled trips or simply not having a direct route to my final destination. sometimes, one-way route would cost me two days just to get there. lol like davao city (philippines) to jeju island (south korea). i had to take a davao-manila flight the day before my 5:30 am flight to seoul, but it was 2-3 hours delayed. then their international airport and local airport was quite a distance away. we arrived in the hotel in jeju around midnight. overnight stays in between destinations can also cost two days, technically speaking. like going to cambodia via kuala lumpur, we had to spend the night in kl to get the early flight to cambodia. the worst locally, i took the longest route to a couple of meetings i had to go to that took me 3 crazy days for a total of 4 hours of meeting. the 3 days round trip involved an 8-hour zigzaggy bus ride, a 12-hour overnight boat ride which was caught in a storm in the middle of the sea, two 2-hour smaller boat rides (but one took longer when caught in the turbulent seas), two 3-hour very rough bus rides, a total of 3 hours in 4 taxi cabs, 4-5 hours in a hotel, early morning flight that got delayed for 6 hours, and a 1-hour flight that went thru a rough ride. goodness, i was sick to my stomach when i got home. lol perhaps out of the times that i get to travel, it's best to travel with some food because not all places serve decent food. also a reading material can be handy when you have to wait several hours when flights are delayed. an extra money for shopping could help pass up the time when you are stranded in airports as nice as singapore. and getting local maps in international destinations is also kinda nice because you get a chance to know a bit of what to expect from a foreign land. pen and a notebook for writing or doodling can be handy. a laptop or a netbook is just great especially if you get wi-fi. or any electronics that you're fond of like cams, ipods etc. i'm just fortunate i guess that whenever i travel i get to meet nice people locally and from different countries to chat with. so i never get bored.

Davao to Jeju? If you really come to think of it, its quite near. What a waste...hehehe... I have taken the same route to Cambodia as you do. But we made the most out of it since Kuala Lumpur is a nice city to spend the night in. Now your third story, it made me dizzy while reading it...hahaha... That is a killer ride... hehehe... Thanks for sharing and for the tips...

I remember one journey of mine. The time I went to Siargao Island, that was a pain. That was the time when flights to Siargao and Surigao was not available. We have to go to Butuan. I remember our trip home. We woke up at 4 am to ride a mini van to the pier at 5 am. We arrived at the pier at 6 am. We took a ferry from Siargao to Surigao for 2 hours. Then from Surigao to Butuan, we took a 2 hours van ride. Then we took a plane from Butuan to Manila. And you thought it was over. From the airport to our house, it took the taxi 2 hours. I arrived at my house at 8 pm. Unbelievable!!!

holy week, by far, has the most number of days for vacation leave from work that is normally consumed for travel locally. it was the only time we could do manila-banawe-batad-sagada-baguio-manila route. which is really crazy because we were on the road a lot. hehe and yes, holy week could have the most traffic depending on the route and the time you hit the road. drinking the night before travel, plus no alternate driver could be very tiring.

Now that you've mentioned it, I remember our road trip to Bolinao in Pangasinan. We were on the road for 14 hours because it was Holy week and the traffic was tooooo terrible. On our way to Bolinao we had to sleep at Candelaria, Zambales because I am too tired to drive upto Bolinao. No one knows how to drive with the set of friends I have at that time...hahaha... We had to search for homestays because all the resorts were fully booked. That is most exhausting drive that I ever did. The funny thing was when we arrived at Bolinao, one of my friends and I were assigned to cook for lunch. The resort in Bolinao have this common area for grilling. So when we were preparing the grill, we noticed that we are lacking some stuff for the grill. This nice fellow lend us some and lend us a hand in putting up the fire. While doing so we were exchanging stories. We found out that they went there the same day that we left Manila. The difference is they left Manila 4 hours ahead of us. And guees what? They only drove for 6 hours. hahaha... MY friend was looking at me with those killer eyes. If only I was not drunk the previous night and I was able to wake up earlier... I was telling myself... hahaha... I was late for 4 hours because I was not able to wake up due to excessive drinking...hahaha...

My trip from England to Colombia seemed my longest trip ever. I traveled with my disabled son and baby daughter. We caught three trains to a hotel close to the London Airport and stayed overnight. We got on our London Madrid flight at 07.00 but it stayed on the ground for another two hours due to fog at Madrid. When it did arrive in Madrid we had missed our connecting flight to Bogota. After a lot of bother we got two seats on a different airline for our ten hour flight from Madrid to Bogota. We arrived at 23.30 and missed the last flight of the day to Cartagena. We stayed overnight at a hotel in Bogota that the airline provided for us. At 08.00 the next day we flew from Bogota to Cartagena De Indias. Then we found out that our baggage had been lost. Whilst in transit we waited in a line of people and had difficulty speaking to the airline due to the language barrier.

Yeah, I can imagine that! Sometimes I do take the executive coach to avoid the stop overs. After a tour you are usually tired and you only think of going home. But if there is a promo airfare from Legaspi, I will definitely take it. hehehe...

I've travel to many various place, none of em is outside the country. My longest travel is by bus, it's the only transportation that take me here and there. It's quite long the journey itself takes and sometime I felt bored of travelling and stay at home relaxing.

well, I've never had a trip where I stayed traveling longer than the visit, but my mom flew to China and they had an overnight stop both ways in Japan, so while she never got out of the hotel, she did stop there twice. And the return visit she got to experience her first earthquake ever, and she lived in California for a while, and it was a BIG one too!

The longest i have been away from home and not with my family is two weeks and i was away with my boyfriend and we went to his old stomping grounds and to see his family and friends there and it was really good and there is actually alot of history in Maryland that i never even knew about and it was a lot of fun and i got to see great things. I will say that we didnt have a layover but when i traveled by myself to Texas to meet up with a friend of mine i didnt have alaptop at the time but if i did i would have brought that and probably would have typed up some articles for associated content or watched some movies or even played some games i would of isntalled on the laptop before leaving and that is always something to do when you are bored.

A delayed flight is really tiring. I heard some experienced canceled flights during the Iceland volcanoes ashes in Europe. Many have to sort for other means of transport like trains, detours and looking for accommodations. I have experienced delayed in flights when I was in Jordan and flying back to Malaysia. It is okay when we are traveling back, but my worries is when our outbound flight to a transit destination is delayed, we might risk missing the connecting flight to our destination for an urgent meeting. I will normally play games with my son during transit or just read a book. It will be better and more fun if we are traveling with family and friends in a bigger group. More ideas to have fun during the transit.

I already shared this experience before in this site but i'll share it again with you. It was supposed to be a more than an hours trip by plane a few minutes ride from the airport to the bus station and more than an hours ride for the bus to reach home. So it's or less around 3 hours. Me, my wife and my kid woke up at 2 am in the morning in preparation to a 5 am flight. Due to bad weather, we were only able to fly at already around 11 am. When the plane was about to land, the airport's runway is nowhere to be seen due the the fog so the pilot rerouted our flight to another airport. When we finally landed it's already around 2 PM. There's no another flight available but we're offered the option to return to our point of origin for free or they'll give us some money so we can continue our journey to our destination so we chose the second option. so we're ferried from the airport to the pier, when we reached the pier it's already 6PM, the boat will leave at 9PM. we set sail and we arrived at our destination at 8am but the sea is so choppy that the boat can't dock, it was so choppy that the captain decided to look for an alternative dock. It was already past lunch time when the boat was allowed to dock at a nearby cement factory. Then were ferried by bus to the nearest bus station, I check my time and it was already 2 PM. Finally we reached the house at 3PM. So what's supposed to be a three hour boring trip turned out to be a 38 hour adventure that's similar to the amazing race.

Well, if i travel by bus , i just enjoy the scenery as it passes by those towns. I always bring a magazine with me though, whenever i travel. This is in case, there is delay, there will be something to do.
