Cultural Misfit

Job hopping - Reasons for job hopping

Switching jobs is a tedious task. I personally have never been a job hopper. For me, the first year (or the first few months) are usually spent in getting comfortable with the culture at the particular work place. And hopping the next year would be a crazy idea. But I know of many people (especially in the IT industry) who keep job hopping almost every year. I find it interesting. Are you like me who want to be comfortable in the 'work culture' of a particular place or are you one of those people who can make themselves comfortable anywhere? Is job hopping really good in the long run? The pay and benefits might be more but is the employee learning anything or able to 'fit in' anywhere at all? And what could be the real reasons for job hopping?

Sometimes there is "handwriting on the wall" that says it is time to make a change. The only times I have ever job hopped were when the company I was working for began to engage in unscrupulous activity that I did not want to take part in. They really left me little choice.

Oh yes, no choice there. I would have done the same. In fact I did. They are still asking me to get back....and I almost agree (I loved my colleagues and the freedom I had there)...but then remind myself of what I would be up against.

Changing jobs due to moving around makes sense. And that can be explained on the resume, I suppose. I also read in yesterday's newspaper that trends are changing. And not all wives are moving when the husband is transferred to a different country or place(which was the norm earlier even if the wife was working). Now they have a long distance relationship and one or the other spouse/family make it a point to meet atleast once a month. So, the transfer of a person doesn't necessarily mean that the whole family moves.

all I had to do was put on it moved due to hubbies job . In the service armed one they cant move with them now as most are sent to the war zone the families have to stay safe. My grand daughter now waits for her new hubby to get back from Afganistan along with her brother they both went. When my son went to Iraq his wife and son stayed here adn I took her every where she had to go she dont drive. BUt the night he came back at midnight she didnt go with us just me and daughter. That felt weird to me but she didnt want to wake up grandson to be there might have made since but if it had been my hubby coming back after al those months I would have had the kids there with me .

The reasons for job hopping is money. But this will only work if you are good at what you do. And if you are good at what you do, your employer will reward you financially in order to keep you and prevent you from job hopping. So if you are job hopping, you are probably faking it and you are not as good as you think you are. People in the IT industry speak the same language and integrate very quickly. Those people don't spend much time socialising. It is all about programming. And even when they have a drink together, they still talk about programming. Their life revolve around it. It is a serious job which require brain power, and they take it very seriously, because the whole company stop if the computer department fail. There are 1000 employes whose job depends of the 6 IT employes in the computer department.

Hi SV! May be in today's fast changing world people feel dissatisfied with their job and keep looking for new avenues. It is a competitive world and people change their job for better prospects. I personally feel that till all opportunities for a person is closed in a particular organisation, where s/he is working, s/he should not change her/his job. I have never changed my job.

Most people working in government organizations don't. It is the private companies that face high attrition rate due to job hopping. I agree with your mindset. But I think when an employee finds better prospects, they tend to change companies. It also happens when the employee is a misfit in the company he/she is working at and wants to cover that up.

Private sector employees are always volatile and if some of them keep hoping, I think their respecive comapnies also treat them like-wise.

Job hopping is because you either want something better (more money, benefits, etc.) or because you want to get away from something bad (you hate your work, your boss, the company culture, etc.). I'm not comfortable moving around. I do remember at my last job, I had been there about 7 years when I applied for a job in IT, and (weird) the boss questioned why I hadn't moved, as it if was odd or something.

lol..in IT it is weird if you HAVEN'T moved! One more reason for job hopping is a person who isn't good at what they do....who change jobs before they are fired. 3 years is the longest that I've worked at any place. Most of the time I've been unemployed.

I am one who does not like to stay in a company for too long, but I tried to stay at least two years. That way my employment record will look better than if it says moving job every year It takes me several months to get to know the other employees characters and behaviors, as well as the business nature of the company. At one time, it took me several days to know that the company I was working with was no good. Luckily I got out there just after 10 days working. The company was close several months later for fraud. An employer will look at your employment record before accepting you to the company, and a job hopper is considered risky to have as an employee cause he/she will certainly busy finding another job before the one year end. Additional headache for the company and not a good image for the company either as it will show a high turn over in the company.

Yes, job hopping doesn't look too good on a resume. And also sticking around in a company which isn't working well isn't good either. But the people I see who are job hopping are changing from one MNC to another. I guess it's the pay and other benefits. But I also wonder how it looks on their resume.

I think every office or working palace have their own work culture and when a new employees get job this this company he had to obey all the work culture of the particular company. I also like work culture for my own comfortable.
