Always Late!

Philippines
February 9, 2011 7:22pm CST
I am an Employee - By - Job - Order in a public institution. My usual working time should be 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. However, no matter how hard I try to get up early and leave the house early, I always end up late --- my usual time of arrival is around 8:10 to 8:30 am. The thing is, when I arrive at, example, 8:10, I make it a point to leave or sign off for work around 5:10 to 5:30 PM. I don't know if what I do compensates the time I was late, but I just think it would be fair. WHat do you think? I am just so upset that my efforts of leaving the house early seems to be useless :(

Maybe you should errrmm...try harder? I'm not sure about your employment, but I think that in public institutions, there are consequences of being late for work, especially habitual tardiness. And, if you're in the government and have not applied for the "flexi-time" schedule, then, being late often could subject you to sanctions. Although, I'm not really sure if they still allow flexi-time.

I'm not quite sure too. A colleague of mine who helped me get the work told me it's fine. I am scared though, as I didn't really intend to be late. :(

Have you talked to your boss about this? I used to have the same problem for various reasons and they tried to work with me. If you are putting in the required hours, there should be no problem, but if you are concerned about what the boss might say you should talk to him/her about it. Perhaps they could work out a flexible schedule or something. If the boss is cool with you making up the extra time at the end of the day, then problem solved. If not, perhaps you could work out some kind of deal so that they don't take disciplinary action against you. I hope this helps.

I have informally told my supervisor about it. And I guess it's ok with her. I am quite worried with the HR though.

I know when I was always late, not only did my supervisor talk to me, but HR also tried to help me find solutions. You might want to meet with HR and ask them for some kind of assistance or something. Good luck!

Have you tried to figure out what keeps you late? In any case most public institutions have codes or manuals, what does your institution say about tardiness? maybe they have a grace period or flexible time allowed for employees. Try reading over the institutions policy.

I think so. I mean I'm also almost always late. And I think it's fair to leave late when we come late. The thing is, try to find ways not to wake up late. Probably sleep early :)

You as a worker knows the rules and regulations of the company, and you should abide that in your own initiative and motivation. Love your work as you love your sweetheart. Its where you get your financial amenities to be comfortable in life. Also, it's where you get your daily undertaking to live. And, why are you late? Because you don't have determination for yourself to be on time in your work. How if in a meeting? or any other important gatherings? I think you're also late. People who are late are lazy people, they don't progress for their job and life. they tends to follow order/s from other people. so, that's what you are? Not a leader in a sense that you're not a model for any employee in the whole world. so, I can say is love your work and don't be late. Try some other method if you can, and be determined to push it through what you are planning for.

I guess you should try your best to go to work early no reasons wont be accepted by our bosses not unless its really emergency, even if you leave your office quite late also it wont compensate the tardiness record that you will have, it is also the same case here in our office most of us arrive late like 8:30 AM and go home late like around 10 PM or so to compensate for the loss time, but it doesnt really make sense at all since the record wont go even if we give an OT of like 5 hours, my co-office mate was forced to resign due to this since our boss was already writing a formal letter of complaint to the HR for his consistent tardiness, and in your case your still a casual (JO) I am quite sure that they look into your attendance for sure once your JO is about to end up and it will have a weigh on whether you'll stay, be absorbed or end of contract.

It's been a month now actually. Like in 10 days per pay day, I have 5 - 6 lates. I don't know what to do actually, no matter how hard I try. It's either my mom will make me run an errand before leaving, or L'll be stuck in the traffic or ride a jeepney where the driver is really annoying by driving really slow and stop at every corner to check if someone might ride in his jeep.

What do I think? I think you should wake up earlier. If you are 10 minutes late then wake up 10 minutes earlier or a half hour, whatever you need. What does your boss have to say about this? If they are ok with you coming in late and staying later then there shouldn't be much of a problem.

Check also with your HR regarding attendance policies. I think they allow for some grace period of 5-15 minutes before you're considered late. Also, unless your office allows flexi-time arrangements, it's not necessary for you to go home past your office hours since you won't be compensated with those extra minutes. But it's a good work ethic.

You can try to find other ways of going to your office from the house. Maybe there are other ways of transport or other roads that you can take. That's what my friends did, and after that they stopped being late (although now they arrive at the office like an hour before), but it is definitely better to be early than to be always late. I too have to leave home early in order to not be late, I always arrive an hour early, but I don't mind.

I think you do fair enough if you come late like come 8:10 and then you sign off for around 5:10. My working time is quiet flexible like you to so if I came late like you do I have to make compensation in my sign of time. and I think that vary fair remembering I always take over time I my work.

Sometimes it better to arrive earlier then you should to work. try arriving to work at 7:30 in the morning and maybe then you will be there on time. i had a friend with the same problem, every time she was late for our meeting, so if i wanted to meet with her on 5:00 i told her to meet me at 4:30 and that was a great solution. i"m sure it's not that terrible if you leave work late as well but in general, it does not make a good impression to your boss. good luck!

try to leave earlier, your obviously not leaving early enough if you are still late. you may have to go to sleep earlier at night so you can wake up earlier and hit the road sooner.

You have to change your mind set. Your customers or clients depend on you to be on time. It' unfair to those people who need your help at 8am. Even though you made up the time at the end. Being late is an act of rebellion. What are you rebeling against? Do you like what your doing? Are you fulfilled? I know at one point in your career you were excited to be there on time. It will take disciplan and a mindset change to overcome this. It is good you realize this is an issue. Start thinking that early is on time and on time is late. every thought will spawn action.

Maybe you should leave your house earlier than the usual time. If you are always coming 30 minutes late at the most then leave your house 40 minutes earlier than the usual time of your departure. I believe if you do that, you will no longer be late again unless something unusual happens on the road. You can't compensate your tardiness by leaving late. When you are late, you are late unless your office is implementing flexible time.

I am in the same boat! My job requires me to be in to work at 7 a.m., but no matter how hard i try, i never make it in until 7:15 or so. I like you, put in my extra time at the end of the day, so instead of ending at 3:30 like i should, i stay until 3:45 or so. My boss's are ok with it, as long as i am putting in my 40 hours per week, but i spuppose a lot of it has to do with what kind of work you do. My position at my company does not leave anyone relying on me to arrive at 7 a.m. on the dot in order for the day to begin, so it isn't really a big deal. But if you work in a setting where someone is waiting on you to begin their workday, ot to be able to take a break or go home, then i suppose i would re-double my efforts to start getting to work on time, because i know if i were in their shoes and waiting on you to arrive so i could begin my day or i could leave and go home, i would get pretty upset if you were late all the time.

Me too! Ever since I was in grade school I'm always late. I worked in a government hospital before and no matter what shift I am, I'm always late. Even though I ready myself 2 hours before the time, I always ended up late. Maybe because of the traffic and some other circumstances but I need to get rid of this habit. It's not nice and it can ruin my record.
