What would you feel if your computer crashes? How do you fix it?

Computers are of big help now. It is what I use to get around things especially that I am now hooked with mylotting. Staring at your computer and not being able to use it because it does not work well is just undefinable. Its too bad that I do not know much on how to fix it. Is it really that hard? They say that it is not that complicated. When you assemble the parts of the computer, they say that you just have to have all the parts needed for it work then follows the plugging in of the connecting cords into their proper places. It sounds simple enough but looking into it, it presents a lot of work. I have tried letting professionals do the connections before then I tried to install the operating system on to my computer. I was successful since all I did was follow the computer's instructions. After which, I thought that I was done. The computer booted well but after a few re-starts, it says that the boot manager is missing. I have tried installing the OS before and had a couple of tries before I was able to figure it out. So the other day I got help from computer technicians and they say that the OS's were overlapping from each other since I have two hard disks installed. They just configured the booting system and then they say that my other hard disk is already compromised. However if I connect what they say the problematic hard disk, it still is functional. When will you be able to say that it really is broken? I hope that you would help me with this.

I'm mostly nervous! I hate it when it crashes. I do fix them on my own since it's what I studied in college, but it means that I probably lose some time when working on my programming habbits!

I guess that it would help to have a back up computer. Good thing that computers do not cost as much as they did years back. I am using a desktop computer and I am thinking of having a net book. They say that net books are not that good. I really can not comment on that matter right now since I have not yet appreciated the feel of it. However thou, I think that it would do just fine since it has almost everything that the usual computer has. The only thing that concerns me are the after market parts of it since they are a bit costly.

I own 3 computers. A desktop, a laptop and a netbook. And if you count my smartphone which has Linux on it (A Nokia N900 with Maemo, which is an operating system that you could use on a computer as well), you could say I have 4. Netbooks are very good for surfing. You can also enjoy a movie while travelling, I've done this and it's good, nothing can beat that, not even a bigger laptop. They are very lightweight (most of them are 1kg), which means you can take it everywhere. I also use my netbook for some of my everyday tasks when I am sick. Laptops are more powerfull, but more expensive. You could use them for a lot more things than browsing. Desktops are the most powerfull machines you can have at home. If you want a cheap backup computer, go for a Netbook or for a very cheap Desktop. That's my opinion anyway :-)

I love computers and they are definitely my field! A few years ago I knew absolutely nothing about computers and I always had to rely on the skills of others and pay hefty fees in order to have an issue resolved. However, I guess I decided to get smart and applied for a course in computer maintenance and installation and this led to me becoming qualified as an IT Technician, this is my official designation now! So, I have no fear of things going wrong now as I tend to deal with everything myself and I have the time and patience for it. I think a lot of people would rather scream and shout at their computers and probably throw it out of the window and this would give them real satisfaction! In relation to your own problem it sounds like your boot files have become corrupted. You have two operating systems running on your pc? One on one hard drive and the other on the other hard drive? If so, this would pose a problem yes and they both would be trying to boot up causing conflict with each other. When you first turned on your computer did you ever have a menu showing the two operating systems? On this menu there is the option to choose which operating system you want to boot into. This is the case when both operating systems are installed on the same hard drive though. I think that when you have major problems with a pc and are not able to get into windows it's best to go for a clean install of windows using your original disks, you have those don't you? It's easy to guess what could be the problem but without physically being present with you it's difficult to give a diagnosis as all computer related issues involve some interviewing of the user which includes physical testing of the related pc. Anyway, I wish you luck otherwise. Andrew

Thank you Andrew. How I wish that I could also apply for a course that deals with computers. Too bad that my parents will not let me because I already have a degree not related with computers. I really love computers. Yes, the menu allowing me to choose from two different operating systems did appeared. I always do a clean install. That's what you do when you boot from a windows operating system CD right? And I always install it to the same drive. I just do not know why the previous OS will not go away.

Having to do repairs on software problems on your own is a good thing. It saves you time and money. I have been doing the same when experiences hardware problems however I wanted to try to install additional hardware on my computer soon. I just wanted to try if I have the capability and patience on doing things that I do not usually do.

Wow. Good for you Francis. As for me, I am the only one tasked to make the computer work every time it breaks down. I am using a desktop so it would be a lot of work for it to be checked by a professional technician. And they are miles away from where I live. I just need to know a few stuff on how make this thing work so that I would not give in so much effort for it.

I really dont know how to fix computers and since I am using a lappy I think it would be complicated. I think when my laptop crash, my world will be crushed into pieces!! As I work online and cannot afford to lose all the files stored in my computer.

That is one of the fears I have so I really have not considered using a laptop as my main computer. I think that having a portable hard drive would help. In the event that you will have problems with your laptop, at least all your important documents are stored in your portable hard drive. Even flash drives I think would do. There are a lot of flash drives now having a much more larger storage capabilities.

Yes its very difficult to stay without computers these days because we are almost addicted to it. I am not very used to computers but for my husband computer is his first wife. He opens his computer as soon as he opens his eyes and closes both of them together. I have also seen him fixing it many a times and he gets exhausted when he not able to do so. Your problem is really complicated and it will require professionals to fix it. This is what I can say.

I truly understand your husband Sunehant. They are just of big help. The main thing I do now is to do discussions here in mylot so if my computer crashes, I will be lost on what to do next. For some guys, its their cars, I love cars too but just can't afford to maintain it. So I'll just settle down with computers for now. I just love its functionality. My computer is fine now by the way Sunehant. I just wanted to do it myself next time. Some of the members of mylot who has knowledge of this matter is really willing to help. Have a good one.

Hi Salonga. I think that having to know a few things on how to fix a computer would come in handy. I think that the first step is to be know all the parts and their purpose. Knowing on how to install your operating system (OS) is also helpful. Here, having technicians install an OS for problems caused by viruses costs a lot. It would be a money saver having the knowledge of it. Well, as for me, I just have to learn the do's and dont's when installing an OS. I also have to learn on how to set up the configuration on the computer as well as to be familiar of some terms applying to the computer.
