Not only do I talk to my dogs but I also sing to them. Bob Marley's she's a rocker becomes, "You're a beastie, you're a beastie, you're beastly little beastly beasts" Gilbert and Sullivan, "2 little beasts, who're quite unwary, covered in fur, wild and hairy, 2 little beast are you" Led Zepplin, stairway to heaven becomes, "There's a beast on the floor, but you want to be sure, sometimes all of the beasts have less paws" etc. all the best urban

I also talked to our pets when I was still at my parents' house. They seemed to be happy when I talk to them, so that is what I did. And, get this, I spoke to them in English! I don't know if they somehow recognize the change in language, because when I speak in our own language, and even in another local vernacular, they're not as happy as when I speak in English. Three years after I left our home, I go visit my parents and the dogs seems to not know my scent anymore, so there's a lot of barking. But, when I start to speak to them, there's an instant recognition, and, with tails wagging, they stop barking and give out their puppy yelps instead (well, they're no longer puppies but that's what they sounded like then).

Me too I talk to cats, dogs, plants...gawd I even talk to my stuffed toys, LOL! I do believe that animals can understand us, well not our language, but in some way. My opinion is that I think they can sense an energy from us, some sort of like an aura that we emit through our emotions. Like if we feel angry or happy, they can feel that energy radiate from us. Or they may also read us through our actions, facial expressions, and body language. I observe that with my cats, they react to me the way I act towards them. Also with dogs. It has always been a mystery to me on how animals communicate with other creatures including us. I remember a saying that goes: Love is the only language that dumb creatures understand. And I do believe in that saying. That's why I always show kindness to my cats, and other animals.

Talking to your pet is a normal occurrance. The reason people have pet is for the companionship. My wife has a little dog and she talks to him all the time. I find myself doing it also. I really believe, even if they do not understand all we say, it comforting to us and the pet. Keep talking.

My cat - my cat Stumpy sitting on the chair I won in a competition.
I talk to my cat and I know a friend of mine talks to his dogs and they know exactly what he is saying..I think animals can feel the love you give them when you talk to them

Hello and welcome to myLot. Yes, indeed, I talk to my cats all the time. I often find it much easier to talk and communicate with my beloved pets than trying to communicate with people. Do you find that to be the case too? Like others who have commented on your post, I believe most, if not all pet owners talk to their pets. I believe there is an understanding that they have when we talk to them.

Well your dogs can understand about as much as a two year old human, no one seems to know what cats and birds understand. But jut the tone of your voice is welcome to all your animals, they consider it part of you identity. If you have fish they recognize the sight of those that feed them, so they are glad to see you. Because all animals have senses that are beyond our understanding at this time, we most likely will not know how much we mean to them.

Hello SomniatorIdealist and welcome to myLot! Me too, I talk to my dog a lot. She might not understand the meaning of my words, but she surely understands the tone of my voice. She knows when I'm happy and when it's time for playing, she knows when I'm angry and she must behave well. What's funny is that sometimes when I talk to my dog, my partner asks me if I was talking to him. We both do the "speak with Binne" thing, so this might happen to me, as well.

I believe everyone who owns pets talks to them. How could you not. The little guys get so excited when you are talking to them. I think they understand to some extent also. Just think you can train puppies to go outside, sit, stand, speak, rollover and fetch.

Talking to our pets for me is a nice way to let them know what we like to say to them I personally talk to all our dogs and they seem to understand what I talk about, sometimes our dogs seem to respond in a way or another but even if they wont answer I am sure they understand what I say to them, this should be normal for us people since our pets are our companion most of the time and they always stay with us live with wont it be a nice way to talk to them.

Yes, we should try to communicate with our pets especially train them. Dogs, parrots are all fast learners
