Some say that if you cannot help in terms of money, you can help by giving something that is far more important than money. So let's say blood donors are needed. Would you do it voluntarily? Let's face it that there are people who sell their blood rather than donate for free.

I have always wanted to donate blood. Since, I cannot give money, I'd like to help other people by donating my blood for them, voluntarily. It's not good to sell them at all, since they are Gd's gift to us, and we don't really own them- but some people are just desperate for money and have no choice..so I don't really hate them. I am also confident that my blood would be very useful since I don't drink or smoke and eat healthy foods.

Yes, and when the time comes that someone in my family needs my blood..I would gladly give it to them- that's what families are for too.

true! and it would be more easier to look for a donor inside the family circle. because more likely you are going to have someone who will match your blood type.

You might find it useful sometime, when someone of your blood type is in need, whether w/n your family or circle of friends. :)

I donating blood every 4 months and I do it voluntarily. We have blood donation camps held in our area and we have a big group of active donors. I am donating blood from last 5 years. Recently one of my relative needed the fresh blood and we still found hard to get donors despite of having a big group of donors. We need more new and active donors.

Glad to hear that there are actually groups of people who is dedicated in donating blood. Your relative has a rare blood type I suppose? My father is AB+ and we really had a hard time looking for a donor when he was hospitalized, good thing we were able to grab some from one of these hospitals, but yes for a fee.

I have donated blood a few times, and I do not mind doing it again. I have actually thought about starting to do it regularly, but I don't always have the time to do it.

Good for you! You're helping other people and you are helping yourself too. They say that it is also beneficial to the donor too :)

I prefer donating my blood, cause it's a win-win situation, you could help those who are in need of blood without money to spare and its likewise good for your body, in a way that since you lose blood your body will replenish the volumes you donated. However, since I'm anemic I haven't had a chance to donate yet, too bad. Maybe someday, if my levels reach the desired amount my body needs then I would definitely donate some of mine.

truly, it's a win for the donor and the patient, I agree w/ what youve said. it's best that you know your body's condition before donating blood, this way you know that you are safe to donate. dont worry there are still ways to help :)

Given the chance If I can why not but one time when I was about to donate blood the doctor told me that I cannot since I am anemic. Anyways I do believe that prolonging another person's life through my blood is a worthwhile cause. Anyways men are more asked to donate since they do not have monthly periods like women so there's no real blood lost on their supply monthly.

It's okay, you also need to think about your own welfare. I do not know about that, men are asked to donate more?

i strongly agree that most of the situation now days resulted to the buy and sell of blood instead of donation. Probably because of poverty.

Poverty plays a big role in the society now and selling of blood is just one of them.

yeah, w/c is a right thing to do. so that if the one to donate is sick or infected w/ disease the benefactor wont be infected too!

I cannot donate blood. I have veins that roll and blood donation always ends with the technician practically in tears and me crying as I leave without giving a drop. There are many things we can do for others without spending money. I'm blessed--for the first time in my life I can afford to send a check each month to charity.

When the needle gets close to a vein they roll away. It's kind of like trying to catch a piece of mercury. Only a very, very good phlebotomist (drawer of blood) can get my blood with 3 or less tries.

Yes and if they miss the vein it would really hurt like h*ll! I experienced it when they had to put a dextrose on me during labor.

hi staria in some places they do pay for it as they have a huge need and thats a fast way to get donors. but even donating it free I cannot do as I had hepatitis as young woman and also I am a diabetic so they refuse my blood but I can donate serum and have done that. but now i cannot do that either as I am now anemic so I cannot do what I would love to do.if they would take my blood I would gladly donate it. lol lol.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have done this before, but now they won't take my blood because I have had cancer. I think I only did a few free blood donations because the first few times they tried to get blood from me, they used my left arm and no one was ever able to get blood from my left arm. I know I have also done plasma donations where I was paid, but I can't do that any more either. I hate being sick!

I am one who cannot donate blood at all as I am born with a rare type blood type, I have tried and have been rejected and wished I could help the person who needed it at the time. I can't imagine selling it though, I understand that others do sell it, but if I could I would donate it for free as it would be helping others.

hi hwg! it's okay, at least you are honest enough to admit. it is very important that the person is fit before the extraction and donation of blood. there are cases of infected blood here in PH that is being transmitted to the patient. there's more ways to help :) yeah, no selling of blood should be implemented.

right, it is better to give something like blood other than money. I also prefer to give blood because i know i will be big help to other people. if you will sell your blood , someday or another when you or your relatives will need blood, you will also have to buy it. Happy mylotting

yeah, and as blood cannot be produced w/o a donor it is really important that there are people who are willing to donate them

I donate blood regularly to Red Cross because it not only helps other people (specifically the poor ones)who badly need blood, it rejuvinates the systems in the body. Experts say, such activity helps keep us healthy.
• Philippines

I haven't really figured out whether I experienced moments of rejuvenation in my system after every occasion of blood donation. I simply take the belief it does, but no proof whatsoever. Since I am ignorant on the medical or physiological processes taking place after blood extraction, logic (rightly or wrongly)has become my guide. Logic tells me that regular blood extraction must have some positive effect to the body, health wise. When blood is extracted the blood cells will instinctively work to efficiently produce new and fresh blood(?)running through the veins. This may contribute proper circulation in the system. I likened this mechanism to a river or any body of water. When it is stagnant, the water is dirty and foul. When it is running, the water is always fresh and (sometimes)potable.

That's right, good example there. There are actually scientific explanations about this blood transfusion thing and about its benefits would have to research about it though.

I heard so too, do you actually feel rejuvinated after? I mean any changes in terms of breathing, like you don't get easily tired or the likes?
• Philippines
12 Feb 11
I used to donate blood voluntarily many times and with pay just one time. Giving out blood is healthy because your old blood is extracted and your bone marrow will produce new blood. It's healthy. It's the best sacrifice of all for the benefit of other people..:)

Were you able to feel significant changes in your body when you donate blood? But yes, I heard that it is a healthy thing to do. But would like to know if there are evident changes like enhanced breathing etc.

Donating blood is indeed a very noble act. And I'm very much willing to donate my blood, if it means helping other people who badly need it. But i prefer to donate it with Red Cross or Red Crescent, because I had faith with this non-profit organization. I've heard a lot of stories when you volunteer in a hospital, they will sell your donated blood. It's kinda depressing to know this kind of incidents happen. Let's support Red Cross and Red Crescent on their noble act.

Yes, giving it to trusted organizations would be my choice too. As I cannot imagine those fat money making hospitals selling my blood to unfortunate patients.

I think that is a really nice way to look at things. Giving blood is so important. I do not weigh enough to donate blood. Even if I could donate I dont think I could bring myself to do it. I am terrified of having my blood drawn. I nearly faint and vomit just getting a little blood drawn at the doctors. Sitting there longer while they draw my blood to donate I am sure that I would either faint or get sick. I'm getting queasy just thinking about it.

It is actually not easy, so one has to think about it before doing it. I had several blood tests when I was pregnant and a syringe of blood made me uneasy too.

we can help in many other ways, but if we can donate blood then why not. this cannot be produced by science, one has to give it in order to produce them :)

If that's the only other option, then I would donate blood. I find it a noble thing to do. But honestly, if I has the money, I'd rather help people financially. I'm paranoid about this blood donation thing especially here in our country. You could get some kind of infection or diseases like AIDS through those needles. I know they've been sterilized and all that stuff, but I guess I just have some kind of phobia about needles :)
@staria (2780)

I am also paranoid about needles! when I gave birth to my son, I really wished that blood transfusion wont be needed because I fear that the blood might not be tested for diseases etc. Given that, I prefer to donate rather than be donated.

But sadly there are those types of people. If not for the money, for food. I think there are some hospitals who give food to replace the blood donated.
