When we feel pain, our first impulse is often to reach for an aspirin or some other medication. While this an understandable response, sometimes in our hurry to get rid of pain, we forget that it is the body's way of letting us know that it needs our attention. A headache can inform us that we're hungry or stressed just as a sore throat might be telling us that we need to rest our voice. Sometimes too the pain might by warning us of something far more dangerous. Taking medication relieves the pain but does nothing for the real cause. Do you take pain killers without trying to find the reason you are having the pain?

I'll never do that. When I feel pain, first I'll find out why the pain exist and locate exact location of the pain. Then I'll try to take some rest or just laying down, if I still feel the pain with same consistency then I'll start to do something about it. I'll try the natural ways of healing (like drink a lukewarm water, or put some patches, rub healing oil, etc), and if I feel I really really need them, then I'll look for the pain killer.

Hi pose,
Though I know self prescription is not advisable I violate this norms and whenever I have head ache or pain I just rush to the chemist's shop and take either a pain killer tablet or an injection.
It was too frequent before but now I am cutting down on this habit.
Thanks for the reminder.

Hi krajibg, Thanks for sharing your experience and I think it's good that you are cutting down on the habit. Often, if given time, the body will heal itself but everyone's pain level tolerance in not the same. My own is not as good as it should be but I'm working at it. I have some friends that I greatly admire in the way they can handle pain. Blessings.

No. however..I do take various pain meds without knowing why I have the pain..I've been for numerous tests over the past 1+ yrs and they know SOME of whats wrong like the fibromyalgia and arthritis.. and a bunch of other little-ish things that add up to big pain. But they dont know what causes my migraines or dizzy spells for example so sadly and frustratingly I have do pain management and remain clueless as to whats really wrong

Pain killers does what it's supposed to do, kill pain. It does not remedy the source of the pain and this can be dangerous. It's best to find the source because it could be the body's tell tale signs that there's a problem somewhere. For instance, if you have a fever, the body,s immune system is fighting some bacteria. If I have a fever, you tend to feel cold. Doctors advice never to cover up to induce sweat but to drink a lot of water. Here the body is fighting the infection and there you are taxing the body to produce sweat. This is only one kind of pain. There are others like headaches which could mean stress or blood clot or tumor. So persistent headaches are not to be taken lightly. So think carefully before you reach for that pain killer

I guess it's fair to say that a lot of us go into autopilot when we have a headache we automatically sometimes without thinking grab the aspirin or paracetamol, it worked in the past and they were effective and no one wants a continuous ache or pain so we strike as soon as possible. What always concerns me greatly about taking pain killers is that if we take them too often or out of routine, our bodies become immune to them and the pain killer aren't as affective or start not to work effectively as they once used to, then what happens? We find an even stronger painkiller and what if that doesn't exist? Personally I prefer the homemade remedies or non-prescriptive, or as you rightly said to get to the root of the cause. That is my main reason why I refuse point blank to start on antidepressants, as they too do NOT get to the root of the problem they just mask it, as do pain killers, we may be masking a signal that our body is crying out to tell us which if we ignore could actually be much more severe or even God forbid life threatening.

I've not been in this situation yet, thank goodness. But I know about the rush to ease pain. In the past few years I've had four upper teeth removed, and on one occasion I went beyond a safe dosage accidentally. I was fine, but for a time I didn't feel too good. It's really not a good idea to play ducks and drakes with pain killers: a safe dosage is very important to maintain even when distressed by pain. I'd never take them unless I knew what they were specifically for, and if I didn't, I'd go to see the doctor.

Well, I usually suffer from back pain ,so I'm trying to find out the cause because the pain goes away ,but it comes back again. I really don't think is a good idea to take too much medication for any reason. Whether is to help you go to sleep or relieve your pain.

I don't like to take any kinds of medications without knowing why. We should know how and why we are putting something into our body. What we might be taking for pain may have no effect on our condition.

My answer is NO. And according to me , it should not be done too. Because by taking pain killers, we might get relief within a short time but thats not the solution. That might get serious after some period of time becasue of our this negligency. The corect procedure is that we should not take the pain, wherever it is lightly, and we should consult any physician or pharmacist ,but not take the medicine on our own.I took one or two times pain killers by myself, but that too only for a situation. but that should not be done. Thanks !

Hello Pose,
I don’t take pain killers unnecessary. If there is a headache then I will go for a steam and many often it give relief to me. Sometimes the headache may go with a cup of tea, in that situation I know I haven’t had my tea and reason of my headache is that only. If the headache is a warning for fever then I may take painkillers without doing any other method. On other pains, if there is back pain or leg pain I may apply some ointment or medicinal oil etc. Applying the medicine then a hot water towel treatment will give best results. Most of the time, if we observe closely within in, we can understand the problem. If I feel that I need the medical check up then I won’t waste my time with self treatment.

When I feel pain, I won't anyhow eat a painkiller, Maybe i would
say, I never have any painkiller at home.
Like few days ago, I am encountered toothache at night and it was killing me.
I can sit and sleep well, but then I never take any painkiller also.
I just lied on my bed and tried to sleep and lucky I managed to
sleep till next morning and the pain was gone.

Sometimes i take medication for pain without bothering why i am in pain. When i am in pain like headache, i take one pain reliever immediately to get rid of the pain. And sometimes i wonder if i am in a great risk or having a health problem because of the pain that i am experiencing.

I don't take pain killers or any kind of medication as long as I can still take the pain. First, I go for an alternative remedy like drinking lots of water (it surely helps!)& for headache I just put some ointment. Pain killers aren't good for our health, it just makes our body immune to the medication then afterwards, they don't have effect anymore.

As the saying is,people turn to any doctor they can find when critically ill.One who has a unbearable pain in body cann't take medicine reasonably.Aspirin is not suitable of people suffering from gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer,It may lead to haemorrhage.
