I know a man who has the habit of always being in a state of depression. He is a high ranking officer under the Government of India drawing a lucrative salary. His only son is in his teens and is a brilliant scholar always performing well in examinations and promises a bright future ahead. His wife is really a fair looking woman who is very loyal to her husband and looks after the family in a very descent way. I am really puzzled whenever I try to find out the cause. Have you any explanation as to the cause of his depression?

It sounds like clinical depression. There are two chemicals needed in the brain. Alot of people have a disconnection in the brain and lack of this chemical. This causes depression and can be cured by the right anti-depressant. Depression is not just called by something negative happening in one's life but by the chemical make up or lack of it in the brain.

Many cases of depression are caused by chemical imbalances. Medications supposedly fix those imbalances which is why they make people feel better.

Hormones in his brain? could have a medical reason rather than something to do with his life...

I have suffered from this dreaded disease and I think, even if you have all those good things that you think you would avoid depression, it is the sickness of the mind, it may be other hidden cause like, work pressure, social activities, family though they may be good outside or before other people, they may have very serious problems. He needs to seek doctor, for expert advice.

The man who you have mentioned in the discussion must be the happiest man on earth. But He is not. There must be some secret behind it.How is he fairing in his official duties. Is he fair and honest. Many dishonest officials are unhappy for the reason that they may be caught at any time or under presure to be dishonest though he may not like it.Does he confess that he is depressed. He or God alone should be aware of the reason for his depression...

i think there might be some health problem he have
or there might be a tension in his mind over any personal problem or even he might be unhappy with his job..

As far as I know he has nothing to worry about his health as he is quite healthy. But not sure of the other problems mentioned by you.

the cause of his depression is that he has an illness.
depression is a disease where part of the brain doesn't function correctly, and so the chemicals produced or not produced cause the symptom of being very miserable.
it's not the same as being sad. the sadness is a symptom, not the condition itself.
depression isn't the feeling of being sad, it's the brain not working right. a bit like how when you have diabetes, you don't produce enough insulin.
so no matter how happy your life is, you can still have part of your brain malfunctioning, and causing a symptom of sadness, even when you've no reason to be sad.
I hope that when dealing with him that you are understanding, and don't treat him like it's his fault. nobody chooses to suffer from the illness of depression, and it's not because of attitude or state of mind. it's a chemical inbalance of the brain.

hi doctor didi you cannot assume by just looking at this high ranking official that because he has a great family and is making a lot of money
that he does mot have some problem causing him to be depressed. It could be over something about his wife or bright teen aged son.Perhaps one of them has an incurable disease or mental illness, or maybe he is depressed because he has made some errors in his job. People often look really secure and without a worry andm can ev n be very ill.We can only guess at why a governmental official is depressed as most will not annouce their problems for the people to get all shook up over. Also he probably does not want any publicity from the newshounds over his problems. I know I would not want to be in that position with all the responsibilities he must have.

Part of my belief is that one of the things that does cause people to suffer from depression is their genetics. My mother and my sister are both depressive personalities and there is really no one thing that triggered this for either of them. That said, I think that you wouldn't always have to see a trigger to be able to know that there is a person that does suffer from depression. The only hope is that these people get the care that they need.

There must be something in his mind. There always an explanation as to the behavior of a person. Maybe you are not aware of his problem. There could have been something happened in the past that ruins his peace of mind for now.

If you are a DoctorDidi, you should have already known that depression depends on multitudes of factors. Sometimes stress at workplace can force someone slip in to acute depression. May be he's not satisfied with the job he's doing. May be he had a different dream which remained unfulfilled. May be he is depressed because he can't stand his colleagues taking bribes and all. Most government officials are irresponsible in one way or the other. Very few honest Government servants who try to remain honest are always ostracized. May be he wanted an interesting and exciting life and his present situation this wish is pitiably curtailed. As the head of the family he has to sacrifice and restrain himself from a lot of things. This certainly causes unhappiness for people who wished for an 'active' life. However from your discussion I identify him as a loner, introvert kind of person who doesn't always share his innermost feelings to people around him. May be he is just like that or may be he is not getting as much help as he's expected to. It's too hard to trace the problem of such a person. Only a person who always observes him can say anything of substance about him.
