Why Can't People See Imagined Sins as Jokes?

When I jokingly comment that 'I might as well "do some unpardonable sin," why do people suppose that I would actually intend to commit the unpardonable act? For example; when I say 'I might as well walk up to my best-friend's wife and declare, "Thou art now-and-forever mine! Thou shalt purchase two tickets to Fiji and pick me up on the way to the airport. ha-HAA!",' why do people assume I intend to DO such a thing IRL? (breaking several Commandments, not the least of which are 'Thou shalt not speak in a smarmy British accent unless commanded to do so by your Julliard peers,' and 'Thou shalt not use an abbreviation without citing the words it stands-for In Real Life.') Why assume that such foul manifestation should take place? Why not let such empty suppositions fade away?

I think dry humor is a fine art, but not all people can appreciate it, much less understand it. Actually, when peeps don't get it, is sometimes what makes it even funnier! Enjoy your trip to Fiji.

Yes, but those times are rare (when the discussion is among people with no power over you).

I know I've made jokes about the unpardonable sin - in relation to dieting. Like I'd say "Oh dear,I committed the unpardonable sin - I ate too much chocolate" or something similar.

You know chocolate is a gift from God (even if it was The Forbidden Fruit)

LOL well I would say it is because maybe what your saying is hitting too close to home in their imaginations. Or maybe they just are obtuse. Anyway I understand what you mean. I for one have a dry sense of humor. Most jokes people tell sound dumb to me not funny or lame the usually kind most people laugh at just sound stupid. But dry humor I get, I for one have jokingly said and sometimes refer to that when I turn 80 I shall walk down a street past car for sale lots that have colorful balloons tied to the cars and with some sharp sissors snip snip and rip of the balloons if an officer comes to arrest me the evideince shall fly off into the wild blue yonder. While I grab hold of the young officers cheek and ask "What balloons, sonny boy" LOL. I most likely won't do it who knows if I will even be alive at 80 chances are I will but ambulitory perhaps not. It is just a joke.

Right. Not everyone spent six years in a Liberal-Arts School, where everything really means nothing real

I understand your frustration. I was raised in a household with two parents who had very, shall we say, unique senses of humor, and that leaves me making jokes, (or at least what i consider to be jokes) that are always obvious to other people. Luckily i find the right body language, or being able to laugh with the joke makes a lot of difference, the biggest problem i find that i have is trying to translate my sense of humor online. Sarcasm just doesn't translate well in type!

Yeah, the basic mechanism (which I probably use too much) is the quotation-mark ... so at least you can say "It wasn't me sayin` that, (it was the One-Armed Man)"

It can be hard sometimes as some people just do not have a sense of humor. Sometimes even they are joking and another person comes up with a joke they get offended. I guess it just has to do with their character lacking in sense of humor, I guess.

Those people don't have sense of humor at all hahaha! In my case i always joke around with those things and one time one person asked me why do i have to do that, or is it necessary for you? I was really shocked that he took me literally and really believed that i would commit such a sin.

In my case, I don't really believe you intend to do what you say in the post, matter-of-factly, mythociate. When I sent my response it was for purposes of discussion to lay down the pros and the cons - what could possibly make it good or bad. We cannot prevent some readers to assume you are resolute to Commit (IRL) the unpardonable act you revealed in your "foul manifestation." The written text you have circulated on the site is subject to multiple interpretations and misinterpretations(?). It is free from your control(unless you have made some qualifications or words of precaution on how to accurately construe your message). The readers, including myself, will take your article according to their (and my)unique perspective by filtering thoroughly how its substance affects them (and me) personally. It is good you have qualified it now to enlighten all myLotters. Don't worry, such empty suppositions will die naturally.
