Actually you can buy a DSLR less than $300 if you used auction. But you have to win the auction first. And sometimes you use all your bid credit and yet you still lose the auction. But you won't get your bid credit back.
There are some cheap DSLR camera at amazon. It is not as low as $300 but in there is camera in the range of $400. You can also check some here. http://marcmm03.blogspot.com/p/camera-stores.html

i agree
you will not get an DSL in that range. but yes, you can good super zoom camera. for example i got mine in the same range. I have a panasonic dmc fz 35 and it is giving me a wonderful experience for the last 2 years. i have used it quite roughly and still it never gave me any problem. also if you want, you can get a tele converter for extra zoom. i would suggest you to opt for the same rather than any other brand because i have done a lot of reseach before taking mine and i can tell you one thing, this one is the best in the range. but yes, i guess now panasonic launched a newer version lumix fz 100. check that out too. the lense is simply amazing, colors are brilliant, focusing is fast and accurate. you can check pictures take by me with that camera at my own website http://www.amitavroy.com
hope this information helps you.

For 300$ you will not got DSLR camera. Or maybe, I don`t know what prices are in your country. I bought Nikon D60 (with 10mp) for 700$, ok I got also adition lens with, but prices for Nikon are about that. Some other brands could be cheaper. I want to buy Sony alpha because it was little cheaper, but than i decide for Nikon, because the quality is better.
