Yes you do earn when you upload photos to your discussion and when you just add photos to your name. I think you earn more when you upload them in the photos section rather when you use them in your discussion. I have checked my earnings after uploading and I earned a few more cents by using photos. So to increase your earnings use photos in your discussion like the one I am using and also upload other photos where it is titled next to friends on your name.
