Are we really in control of our lives?

We always say that our destiny is in our own hands and that it is us who decide what we do with our lives. Some are even bold enough to claim that no one tells them what to do. If this is the case, why do we let ourselves be ruled? Why is there a leader and a follower?

I've raised six children and as they grew up,I noted that for the most part my children were well rounded but there was usually one characteristic that was domenent. Each one of them knew how to lead and they also all learned to follow. However, one of my daughters I believe is a leader and she doesn't care who likes or dislikes her opinion and that is just apart of her character. I have a son who has the ability to be a leader but he is a bit more passive and would prefer to be a right hand man or involved in a team. I have another child who likes to lead but has to have someone there encouraging her and she is influenced by those around her or should I say takes their ideas into consideration as she leads. Overall, from my experience I believe we are born with a gene or maybe it is a destiny from the start to lead or follow. And as a group my children collectively followed the most confident child and encouraged or picked on the child that had a lower self esteem. For the most part whether we are a leader or a follower who we choose to hang around with determines our destiny and what we do in a particular situation determines the consequence and builds our character. Interesting topic!

You won't believe what inspired me to post this question. It started with my kid son asking about a game he heard called Follow the Leader :) Well, I guess on a micro viewpoint, the concept of leaders and followers is plausible. There are indeed people who are born leaders and those who follow them. But on a macro perspective, who does the leader follow? He isn't on the top of the leadership hierarchy, is he?

I love your train of thought. I would think that that the most powerful leaders are focused and single minded. They believe that there way is the only way and they have already made up their mind that what ever their goal is will be accomplished with or without any one else so with that confidence they plow forward and whether it is out of low self esteem, curiosity, or a similiar mindset, there will always be those who follow. But it is more complicated than that, on one hand I think the leader is following his or her own mindset. Beamer88 are you a leader or a follower. I think of myself as somewhere in the middle. I can be a leader but I don't like the rejection if I am wrong or I don't want the responsbility of leadership. In most cases I align myself with people that I feel are of a similiar mindset and I assist and help them push forward. If two leaders meet up they usually part quickly or it becomes a fight........ A very interesting topic, we learn so much from watching our kids grow up don't we.

Oh, I forgot about money. Yeah, money is really one of the biggest controllers of people. A lot of what we do are really dependent on money. Hi, welcome to myLot :)

I do think that for the most part we are. Perhaps not fully in control, or to the point we would like to. I do think that we rule ourselves, and society does rule us to a point as well.

It is true that we do conform to the society we live in. I agree with that. Even within these norms, it is still possible for us to make decisions, and make our own choices.

But we conform to the dictates of society. Is it possible that we just think we rule ourselves but in fact we really don't?

Hiya beamer, In control of our lives? To a great extent we are in control of most of it. Just how much is controlled by a Leader I would like to know as well. There is so much coming out now of how we are being controlled and we don´t even know it. But no one can own the real us inside and that´s what is most important more than anything. I could go on a make a big list of the Cameras installed all over the place and other things but again they cannot control who we are and what we are. They cannot control how much we love and so on. I hope they never will try that one either.

I agree with you that no one really can control what's inside of us. But yet what we project is again to conform with society. We don't laugh out loud when a sign says "Quiet" even though we find something very funny :)

Hiya beamer, You are right about that you know. I have found something very funny and you were not supposed to laugh and yet I had to smother the giggles. I was watching a Christmas Play at the School and they came out with a remark that was so funny even now it still makes me smile. Children are so funny sometimes. Also I have found some things here that they label with names in English that I have found very funny too but out of respect I have managed to just grin and that´s it. Take care now have a great Day.xxx

Leaders have an illusion of control and power. They cannot truly order us to do anything if we do not decide that we will agree with it. We are in absolute control of ourselves, and that is all we have control over. Your whole life can change in a moment, by thinking different thoughts that would conclusively lead you to a different path than what you were earlier on.

That is true. No person could exact control over us if we don't let them. So that's why it begs the question of why there are still leaders and rulers if they have no real control over a person. Oh, well. I guess life is really complicated.

I agree with this theory also, and it is complicated. I let myself be in subjection so I can handle my personal affairs. Basically, the chain of life and where you start can decide if your labeled a leader or a follower, but the key word is "Labeled" because I know some people who are in charge so to speak and shouldn't be. On the other hand I know some individuals who absolutely should be in charge and aren't. Maybe your past doesn't allow you to be a leader in your secular position but once you are in a different setting you are the man!

Or, better yet WHO is a leader or a follower? At this point leaders are necessary for making decisions that others don't or can't make. Usually a leader is someone who will except responsibility for their own actions as well as the followers, or group that he is leading. A follower is someone who usually isn't able to withstand the responsibilities of leadership.

So I guess if we have leaders and followers, then people are really not in control of their lives. Although a leader may seem to be in control, his actions should be for the good of the whole group. He sets aside his personal wants for the needs of the group. And as such, he too isn't in control of his own life.

True but if a leader doesn't take care of himself first then he will be in no condition to take care of the pack. Unless he has a follower to take care of him better than he could do for himself..lol

Personally in a lot of ways, I do think we are in charge of our lives, dreams and happiness. But at the same time there is a lot more to it than that. Since I am someone who as a Christian I believe in a God who is there to help us, he is one I can go to in Prayer and count on to help me thru things in my own life as well. No, no one else is in charge of our decisions and thoughts more than us, but when we allow someone else to guide and direct us it can be a lot more happier as well.

No one's ever free until we can walk around in our naked body, that's what I say. The weather is our ultimate controller, hahah! It decides how fast we should drive our car, what to wear, where to go, what to do.

I say so. I mean I feel like we are 100% responsible for our futures, and we reep the consequences of our actions and in-actions. That's how I feel. I feel 100% in control of my life just by the choices that I have made and I have yet to make. However, fo course, things happen in life that we can't control - naturally - but I think we can turn the tables back to it being OUR lives by choosing to deal with it in whatever way we choose...Know what I mean? lol.

Well, there are definitely a lot of things beyond our control. As such, I can't really say that I'm 100% in control of my future. But yes, what we are in control of is the choices we make to handle any obstacles in life.

I don't believe that we can be in complete control of our lives. There are some things we can do nothing about. Yet there are other things that we have the power to make happen or to avoid. While we can't control everything in the world around us, it is a good feeling to have control over the important trials in our lives.

There is always the rule in the nature - Stronger rull over weak and survive . Anyway : Are we speaking for rule and be ruled in the sociaty or something else ? To follow someone he don't have to be your leader but someone you admire . And if a lot of people admire and like to follow him he must have some greater wisdom and is responsible , but its not like he tell you what to do with your life . And well there are two choices : If we hold our destiny - we can always change our next step . And if we don't - then all the happy and sad moments up until this point of your life are your happy memories and there will be more . They might have being controlled but you are happy with them .

That's a good point. People being controlled or led by someone may had allowed that to happen because, like you said, they admire the person and following him makes them happy.

We can never control our lives completely. We can (almost) never foresee accidents, for instance. People die in car crashes, natural calamities take hundreds of lives, the economic climate costs us our jobs, politicians take irresponsible decisions, start wars, etc. All we can do is try to have some control, and many of us do succeed. Hard work and efficient decision making can make a change in the right surroundings, but unfortunately these surroundings are the element that escapes our control.

I used to believe that we are in control of our lives, and that the choices we make are what determine what we would become or what would happen to us. However, the rough times that I have been through seem to make me realize that there are things which are beyond our control. Maybe, there is truth in what they call destiny or fate - that there is a pre-determined path for each one of us. Nevertheless, I still try to all under such thinking because I wouldn't want to believe that God is a manipulative God. I mean, what's the sense of creating us when He has already carved what would happen to our lives. I would like to believe that God or whoever that Supreme Being is doesn't want us to become just dependent on fate. He gave us the freedom and the will that no other creatures possess.

it is because we depend on certain things (food, water etc) and on each other. And that dependence can be abused by others. But we have to accept our place in nature and in the universe, we don't rule it, we are part of it. Imo if we realize that we can grow in our minds which indeed can help us fulfill our dreams and hopes.

I strongly agree, with the statement that our destiny is in the hands of our own. All the decisions we take, affects the destiny of our lives in the future. what we do, that's what led to our destiny. In certain circumstances, when we feel so hard to get rid of certain things, and when we feel it is beyond our ability, we would say, "This is my destiny." If there is someone who is sick, we will try all sorts of treatment to her, and when that does not work we will say, "Surely this was his destiny." if our destiny was determined in advance, then we will not be ordered to ask. The ability to ask and beg the Lord has prepared especially for us, there is no such thing as' already doomed in advance. "Particularly for people, God has prepared the ability to repent, seek, and forgiveness from God. Through it all we can to achieve victory. We not be say, "All have been written, there's nothing I can do." As humans we must try.

Religiously speaking, I believe that our paths our preordained. And it's only up to us how we will walk that path. And that is where our ability to decide on matters comes in. And as such, we can decide to be ruled or not to be ruled. Yes most of has decided that someone should lead us. And we do that, I feel that we no longer are in control of our lives.

the words destiny and success are often understood to have the same meaning. Destiny is your goal and Success is the fact whether you have reached it or not. Leaders are those who are are successful in working towards destiny and followers are persons waiting to be lead to their destiny. I don't believe in "no one tells them what to do" stuff, one bad shot on the wrong side of the law, the prison will tell these people what exactly to do.

Neither do I. People do something because they were told do. It doesn't necessarily mean it was explicitly said, it could also be implicit. Like how we conform to society.

Interesting questions.well said!I think your desting is master in his own hands. These leaders, the first thing to do is take control of your own destiny, then can be leaders.A person has not been able to take control of your own destiny,so he could not have become a leader.

So if if the leader has taken control of our destiny, then it means that we no longer are in control of our lives. It's the leader or the ruler controlling the actions we take. I mean, the things we do should conform to what the leader says.

Yes, we all are under control of our lives. Besides it, it is true that our destiny is written already. We don't know what to do and what to happen to us in future. We cannot predict our future. However, we cannot leave doing work in our life. Our duty is just to do the work and it is not confirmed that we will get positive results or not.

On the way of Life there are always choices, may be two or more than that.Human nature is try first up to maximum level but as per me there is a suprime power who leads us in every step of our actions day to day life.We can say Him God/ Time/ Destiny. There is neither leader nor follower.I believe that something is left which decide our fate/ our due/ our right after done tries our level best.
