f your laptop has a firewire port, and you have a double ended firewire cable, you can use "Target Disk Mode" to get the hard drive from your desktop to display on your laptop. The next stage would be to see whether you could then boot up the laptop off that volume. That would basically get you what you wanted. I have to admit that I've never tried this - I don't know whether the volume displayed is bootable - does anyone else know?
