Job Interview, why does it have to be a waiting game?

So I'm actively looking for a new job again, and I just got off an interview this morning. I was scheduled at 12nn, got there on time, but they had me waited for 30 minutes before the HR personnel called me in. That got me into thinking, because 99% of my past job interviews I had to wait from 30 minutes to almost an hour before they call me in and conduct the interview which sometimes only lasts for 15 minutes! Why do they give a schedule and not follow it anyway? And the worst part is, they expect us to be there on time, but they never do. I just don't get it.

So far all my interviews are conducted at the agreed time. It's probably just a coincidence considering that we Filipinos are not known for our punctuality. A 30 minute wait is about par for the course for us. Or maybe she scheduled several people at the same time. But whatever you do, don't arrive late for an interview even if past experience tells you that they don't start on time.

Yeah, that's what sucks, cause I know that I can never ever be late for an interview because it will definitely give a red mark on your application.. So I guess I just have to suck it up, and wait until they call me..

I had an interview a couple of months ago...they called the day before and scheduled me to be there at a certain time. I went there, they came and got me out of the waiting room and took me to a little conference room. In the conference room I spoke with the HR person for a couple of minutes, then she left. I waited another 45 minutes for the main interviewers to show up on site. This was in the days just before Christmas, because they wanted to get the position filled ASAP. The lady that, whoever they hired would be replacing, this day was her last day and she would be greatly missed. 2 weeks after this interview I got a letter by mail that someone that had more of the qualifications they were looking for had been accepted for the job. And another type of interviewing technique that's becoming popular in my area are GROUP interviews. They invite 25 people to hear all about the job they have to offer. Everyone is sitting there looking at each other...all of us wondering who's going to actually get the job. Then they have about 50 people that actually work there, 2 of them at a time, take one individual to an office somewhere for a individual interview....all the while making you feel like you have the job this is just a "little formality". Then you get a call the next day telling you that someone who's qualifications more closely match what they're looking for has been accepted for the position. It's really really getting aggrivating!!!! I told someone the other day that if an employer wants a girl that has red hair, big blue eyes, 5 foot tall and 90 pounds sopping soaking wet....they can get them! There are just too many people trying for the same jobs.

Yeah, I guess they just want the perfect person for the job.. but I think making them wait for before they start the interview is just really annoying.

The longest time I had to wait for an interview was around two hours. And this was scheduled at 10PM. I had to wait for the client for the final interview and I was already sleepy when he called me in for the interview. But I did get the job. I also don't get it why most job interview schedules aren't being followed and you have to wait most of the time.

Hahaha. I just don't like my time being wasted by doing nothing. I firmly believe in they saying that if you come late, you waste other's time, if you come early you waste your time, so come on time.. So no time is wasted right?

I think there is no problem when it comes to waiting. I've been actually been into these interviews a thousand times before since i had so many failures than successes and i got used to waiting that when ever it is airconditioned, i couldn't help but sleep

the people that are hiring want to make sure they get the best possible person for the job. as for your wait, maybe they were unorganized?

I totally understand that they do want the best person for the job.. If I were in their place, I would sure criticized each and every applicant.. But my whole problem is why do they have to make me wait before they interview me... I was once applying for this job.. and the secretary of the department just doesn't want to give me the results yet, and I think she purposely made me wait for hours, and the big boss of the department had to follow her up twice, because he realized I was already waiting for so long at the lobby just for the results of the interview.

I also wonder why this usually happened during job interviews, regardless whether there are other applicants who came earlier than you or there's only you who is scheduled to be interviewed that day. Still people at the HR Department keeps applicants waiting for some time. Perhaps they're too busy to entertain an applicant strictly at the time stipulated. And maybe because they know that an applicant will surely wait even if it takes hours to wait since he is the one who needs the job.

Hahaha. If their reason is the last one you stated, then they are so inconsiderate. I just think that if you were given a specific schedule then are expected to come on time, at the same time, you have to expect that they will never come on time. LOL. It's just making me crazy, and I have another line up of interviews, and I'm still crossing my fingers that I won't have to wait before they call me.

Hello Ingkingderders, Are you Kidding me? that's a long wait for you? for me, that's the fastest lane when it comes to an interview. it's actually testing your patience into getting this job, yeah it sucks but true. the jobi applied before took until late in the morning, i was the last to be interviewed and they didn't pass me like you know, 4am interview when i went there around 5 in the afternoon...

Oh wow! that is what you call patience and perseverance. LOL. I was in your position, I would have walked-out after 3 hours, or I would have demanded to talk to someone and asked point blank if they have any plans on interviewing me in the near future. LOL. I don't really like waiting, specially if you have been given a schedule, because it just defeats the whole purpose of giving out schedules.

I think you should learn one day to learn to be patient in waiting. that's the reality of it, or people might have wrong perception of you with regards to patience. remember, you are the one looking for a job

Well, I guess one explanation is they might be measuring your behavior or attitude. If a person is patient then he's a good person to manage and work with. Also, it somehow measure's how calm you are in a stressful situation. Another possible reason is, maybe they weren't ready that time? LOL!

Yeah, I already thought of that, but my problem is, my interview was during lunch time, and they know that I only have limited time, but they still make me wait for 30 minutes, and when the interview began, the HR had to skip some questions because as she said, I might be late for work.. It's really confusing. Hehehe. Thanks for dropping by! Have a great day!
