Detention

Why is it that kids never tell you until it's too late that they are going to get detention for something?
My son(in 3rd grade) told me 2 nights ago that if he doesn't bring his recorder and music book to school by today that he would get detention. I wish he would have told me when he was first asked to bring it.... I just wish kids weren't so forgetful all the time.
So has your child had detention in school yet?

I'm not sure if they really forget things or they conveniently just forgot to tell us. I think that most kids deliberately tell us things at the last minute so we don't get enough time to react. Maybe they're a bit afraid of being punished or they might have felt so guilty or ashamed of what they've done that they wouldn't want to tell us. I was that way when I was a kid. I didn't want my mother to worry so I thought it best not to tell her. Anyway, I'm still fortunate that my son hasn't been given detention and I hope he wouldn't ever.
