Mystery Diagnosis?

I love the show Mystery Diagnosis... probably because I felt like I belonged on the show for many many years. At one point I was told there was a 50% chance I might have Multiple Sclerosis but then about 2 months ago a neurologist told me I had Transverse Myelitis. He didn't do any new tests or anything but review my 3-4 year old records. However, I saw a new neurologist on February 1st and he says I do have Multiple Sclerosis. He was very thorough in reviewing my past records, doing an exam and reviewed a new MRI of my neck which showed new spots which weren't on my prior MRI 3 years ago. I will be having 2 more MRI's done tomorrow and then a spinal tap done at the beginning of March.
Do you suffer from a Mystery Diagnosis?

i used to. i have had fibromyalgia for a number of years (even before they really knew what it was) but now there is a little bit more known about it but not much.
i really like that show too though. i read about a woman who went to 32 doctors before she finally got an answer to what she was suffering from.

I have not seen the show. I think that I would give up before I made it to the 32 doctors. Thankfully I do not have any illness, but I am overweight. I am needing to get control of that issue though.

I hate to hear that you have Multiple Sclerosis, but hopefully now you can get the treatment you need. I too have MS and was diagnosed the week of my 18th birthday. It was a bit of a mystery diagnosis though, because I had to be sent to doctor after doctor and had everyone scratching their heads. At one point I was told that I just had a severe sinus infection. But I finally was sent to a doctor in another state that finally sent me for the MRI and then spinal tap to confirm that I do have MS. That was in 2005.

I love the show and am truly amazed that some of the people can keep going on and on from doctor to doctor being rebuffed and at times almost laughed at (that is the equivalent to a doc saying it is all in the mind methinks) and yet stilloften times with horrendous debilitating symptoms keep fighting and not give up.
For me I think the mystery is how i can smoke heavily for 40 years, eat terribly and still (so far) be relatively healthy. Strange how different people get struck down and others can abuse and abuse their bodies to no ill efffect. we are a wierd species lol

Personally with Health Care being at the stage it is these days, I think there are a lot of people, including myself that have things wrong with them that either no one knows how to fix, and diagnose properly or their hands are tied due to the Red tape in the Medical world with different plans, etc. One thing that major frustrates me is most of the time Doctors not wanting to listen or find anything, and then you end up having to do a lot of the footwork yourself and keep on switching doctors as well.
Glad they have found out what your issue is well and hope they can find things to help treat it, and help you feel better as well.

No I do not but if I did I do not think I would be so cheerful and upbeat about the outcome.

I did, but the Mystery was to the Drs.,not me. I knew I needed a tooth out or my sinuses taken care of. But the x-rays didn't show it and for 13 months they gave me different diagnosis plus pain killers, one for each month. Finally my tooth got bad enough that they could see the problem and pulled it.
Now I have blood in my urine. They keep telling me what it's not. Next week, I go see these fools (Drs) again. So far it's NOT my kidneys because it's fresh blood and not unprocesses stuff. I could have told them that, wrong color. I had a test that poked a hole into my bladder months ago, about the time the blood started. I think they hit a vein or capilary that isn't healing up because I go to the bathroom so often due to diuretics or maybe I'm getting diabetes. At any rate, I'm being tested for hemophilia and all kinds of stupid stuff. Want to bet they tell me what it's NOT again. Test before this one, they told me that the amount is sooo small that they can't find it. Well, now it's a lot more, I have to take iron pills to keep from being tooo tired.
Everything up here is a mystery diagnosis. There isn't a person up here who hasn't had something they can't find, at least for awhile. Take care.

I am blessed with good health, thank God. I have never had anything the docs could not diagnose and even then it was just ordinary maladies that were easily fixed. I'm sorry you have MS and wish you the best prognosis possible.

I don't believe that I have a mystery disease, but I do have multiple sclerosis. I was diagnosed in the spring of 2001, a few months after I retired from my job in the central office for a hospital group. M is an unpredictable disease. No two people will have exact the same symptoms. In fact, the symptoms of some are so different that they appear to have different diseases.

I have no physiological diseases. My lungs, heart, kidneys, eyes, and all seem to all be in working order. It is my brain that is causing me problems. I have had clinical depression for as long as I remember. Now, since 2006, I have had severe depression. Depression all of the time. With social anxiety to boot. No mystery diagnosis for me. I have known most of my life. I bet it is good to know atleast what you have for sure. I know it is for me. That is part of the battle. If you know what is persuing you atleast you know how to fight. A spinal tap doesn't sound fun. Hope it goes well for you.

I have never watched the show. I feel I could be on it as well. I have been misdiagnosed with cerebellar degeneration almost 15 years ago. I went for a second opinion, and was told that is not what is wrong, but they couldn't say what it was. I have had many MRI's, spinal tap, nerve tests and a bunch of other tests. I have been to a number of doctors, even a specialist on the cerebellum. They couldn't find anything. The symptoms are a lot like MS. However that's not what it is. My MRI's didn't show the spots associated with MS. All they have shown is arthritis. When I got the initial diagnosis, at least I felt like I knew what to expect. Now that they are unsure what is wrong, everything that happens to me health wise, I wonder if it is because of my condition.

When you posted about the Transverse Myelitis, I looked it up. I guess to me it does not sound really very different from MS, since MS is a disease that affects the myelin sheath as well. I am sorry that you have had to go through so much uncertainty. I know that the sooner they get a correct diagnosis then the sooner appropriate treatment can begin. It does not sound like it is an easy diagnosis to reach.

I used to. Well, I still have it but it has a name now. Panic Disorder Syndrome. It wasn't until I was 41 that I got a name for my symptoms and I suffered from this since I was 17 years old. I had doctors tell me that it was all in my mind, that I would just have to deal with it, that I was high-strung, etc. I think I broke the sound barrier rushing to the doctor's office once I heard there was a name for what I had AND a treatment! LOL
I'm so sorry to hear that you most likely have multiple sclerosis but I am happy for you that you at least now have a diagnosis because that means your symptoms can be treated at last. It sounds like you finally found a great doctor!

I wouldnt know if its a mystery or not because I avoid doctors as much as I can haha!!
I try to make my own diagnosis and find herbal medicines to help me. I dont trust doctors, I think they dont really know, they're just guessing......but thats me!!
