As per advise of friends and doctors, hubby bought one kg packet of oatmeal granuales. I prepared Uppma from this as we do with rice suji, it tasted ok.
I also prepared 'kheer' from it by boiling in thick milk and added 'sugar free', this too tasted fine.
What more can be prepared from this?
This is for the first time we ate oat meal.
Please advise.
Thanks in advance.Kalyani

hello dear,
You can cook it like pancake.
All you need to do is mixed with flour, sugar, butter, milk or egg and baking soda.
Then add water just enough to make it sticky before frying.
I will try to post a picture of what i am talking about dear.
Have a great weekend

Honestly other than baking cookies and oat snack bars I really don't make much with Oats or Oatmeal. Though my hubby has started preparing oats into oat meal every other week or so as it seems besides him I'm the only one who likes it. However, he's only make it 2x and I have eaten it 2x prepared this way not in a treat of sorts. He follows the directions on the box and then smothers it in margrine and brown sugar! YUM! Though he tends to make too much and I nibble on the plate of left overs in the fridge for a snack.

I've personally never tried to do anything fancy with oatmeal when I am eating oatmeal. I mean I will occasionally use regular oatmeal to make no bake cookies with because they are one of my favorite treats. However, most of the oatmeal that we eat in our home is instant oatmeal because it doesn't take any time to prepare and I really like a lot of the flavors that are available. My favorite flavored oatmeals are the fruit and cream varieties.

I don't know. I've had oatmeal quite a few times but I've only had it as oatmeal and not an ingredient to anything. We just cook milk, sugar and butter with it.

Oatmeal is good in most breads that you may make. I am not sure what kind of bread foods are common to your culture. I put it in cookies (a sweet). I mix it with meats from time to time in various dishes. I would like to know more about what you eat in your culture.

I cant be sure for the things you can make from the oat. But I am pretty much sure about the advantage of oat. Its a very nice thing to eat for those people who doesnt have time to take their meal and its very easy to prepare at any time...
Thanks...

Oat meal is good. I have it on my kitchen and in the office. If I dont want my breakfast I just make a meal out of it. Also in the office, thats my merienda and it is healthy. You can add some milk or chocolate or any thing that fancies you, but there are some oatmeal with flavors already. It is fiber and it is good for the heart.

Oat meal is good for us, even for kids. They have high nutritional values. I really like them, and they are not really that expensive.

Hello Kalyn and welcome to myLot. Oatmeal come in several forms here in the United States. We have steel cut oats where the oats are cut into smaller piece, The we have rolled oats where the oats are flattened. There there is the quick cooking oatmeal with the oats almost ground up in to real small pieces that cook with just hot water. I like to use the rolled oats in baking and adding to ground meat to make a meatloaf. These are also best for a hot cereal as they keep their form better. I like the steel cut oats for a breakfast cereal because they are more filling. I add some sweetener (I like molasses.) and or dried fruit such as raisins, craisins (Dried cranberries), cherries. I don't know if any of these are available in your country but this will give you some Ideas and you can look them up on the net to possibly find an equlivant. Oat meal id also used in baking such as cookies and bread

I'm not sure how those foods are prepared, but I know a lot of times when we eat oatmeal in America we will add sweeteners or fruits to give it a variety of flavors. My favorite is cinnamon/raisin, but I have also seen a variety of things like nuts or brown sugar or maple. I guess it depends on the flavors you like. Try different things and if you don't like one, then don't try it again. You could surprise yourself.

Nice discussion Kalyaniji. :) I got to learn a lot here. Upama is what we wanted to cut down on. My standard breakfast routine is like this. Sunday and Monday, we eat idlis. Tuesdays and Wednesdays it is bread. Thursdays and Fridays it is oats, and saturdays it can be dosas and other varieties of pancakes. This menu - has been fixed for the last oh so many years! Earlier though we used to eat upama instead of oats.
I only boil oats, and add milk and cardamom powder in it. I also add nuts and raisins, or chopped bananas. Since it is breakfast, that is very filling. But in case there are no fruits and nuts at home, we opt for eating it plain with milk and sugar, and thereafter eat either cornflakes or egg. I've tried porridge with bananas, apples, grapes, gauvas, and many other fruits. It does not taste bad.

In preparing oatmeal for my beau. I would first hit up with a little water then add with fresh milk. Right after that I will add some butter and put some cinnamon powder. Then garnish it with slices of banana. That is what my beau would like the oatmeal to be prepared.

Welcome to the oatmeal eating club. Truly, oatmeal is good for breakfast specially the whole wheat kind. Oatmeal lowers cholesterol levels, so this is what makes oatmeal good. And to top it off, oatmeal is rich in fiber which makes it easier to digest, and it is a complex carbohydrate which allows you to stay fuller after meals. I tend to put peanut butter or almond butter with my oatmeal. Why? I just want to have the added protein in it.
