Tonight is pizza night (Friday) and I like to experiment a bit. Now that I gotten the basis of home-made pizza and its various topping ideas, even to the point of making my own donair and its accompaning sauce, I want to start experimenting with herbs and spices, particularily when using a normal tomato-based pizza sauce. So far, I've kneaded oregano, basil, and black pepper into the dough, then put italiano (spice blend) after putting on the pizza sauce. I'm kinda wondering which other herbs/spices would go good with a tomato-based pizza. And yes,I'm already starting to think about making a chili pizza and a mexican pizza using chili powder :-)

My choices would be in addition to the basil, some fennel seed and some rosemary. Basil always comes first for me in tomato products. I even think tomato plants grown next to basil plants taste better. I love rosemary in things and fennel is the spice that I think of in Italian dishes. Of course Garlic with the white sauces and everything else. I will have a big slice of pizza when you get done.

My toppings are vegan, there are many choices we have animal cruelty free meats, sausages, cheese, maionese, tuna-like topping and vegetables are also very delicious, I like to mix it up a little bit. Always with spice, it's delicious! Enjoy!

It's always fun to mix and match for pizza, isn't it? I didn't realise you can have mayonaise on pizza, which toppings do you use for mayonaise?

Hi. Masihi. Tonight is pizza night for us too. This morning, I told my husband to get a pizza and some fries for dinner. I told him that I was not planning on cooking tonight. I will cook for Sunday dinner this weekend though. I hope that you enjoy making and eating your new pizza. I know that it will taste yummy! Enjoy!

Hmm, pizza with fries? That's different :-) I'm normally not a fries fan, however I will eat shoestring fries or spicy fries. Bon appetit :-D

MMmm...pizza. Every wednesday night here at my place is homemade pizza night. We like to use a spice blend that i can buy at a local store simply called "pizza spice" it has all those basic italian spices in it, oregano, basil etc, but it also uses rosemary, thyme and fennel seed, which adds a VERY nice flavor to the pizza. The way i use it, i don't incorporate it into the dough, but after i have my dough stretched out, i sprinkle the mix liberally over the pizza before i add all the toppings. Oh, i almost forgot, it also has a touch of red pepper flakes in it as well. normally i am not a fan of red pepper, as i don't usually like hot, spicy things, but the little bit really adds a nice warmth to the spice blend. Garlic is also an awesome addition. finely chop and put garlic through a garlic press and mix that right into the crust, i think that would be amazing. good luck on your next pizza creation!!

You can do so many amazing things with spices! I'm a huge fan of tarragon, myself. I've also used rosemary and thyme in pizza dough, and garlic powder and onion powder both go really well with it too. A friend of mine who makes a lot of homemade pizza swears by adding a tablespoon or two of sugar to the sauce, but I find it's too sweet for my tastes. Some other suggestions I've gotten are bay leaves, coriander, cardamon, cumin, fennel, parsley and marjoram. I've been sticking to spices I had on hand, so I haven't had a chance to try those out yet.

I've heard of some of them, I really should make myself a home reference book of sorts on various spices and herbs. I would definitely not add any sugar to my sauces either. Thanks for yor input, I'll most surely keep it in mind

Hmm, garlic salt? I think there's a lot of sodium in the sauce, but it's definitely a good idea if I were to make my own tomato sauce from scratch, which I plan to do if I could plant a garden somewhere.

That would be very delicious. I am very much addicted to pizza. I have pizzas atleats 3 times a week, for lunch, dinner, or just fir a snack. I often go to the pizza shops in the shoppoing malls. In fact, my favorite is Hawaiian pizza, thick crust, lots of cheese and pineapple. Enjoy your Friday pizza night !
