My friend bought a new hamster today. Upon seeing that little creature, I also wanted to have my own hamster. But I have also a 1 year old baby turning 2, I'm scared that she will squish it or maybe she will be bitten. I'm thinking if it's safe to have a hamster in the house. And I'm also scared if I will get any diseases from it, of course I want insure the health of my baby and family before than anything else. How about you, do you have a hamster? What are the advantages and disadvantages of having a hamster as a pet? Are they the type of animals who easily bring contagious and airborne diseases?

Eek I am scared of hamsters, lol, they remind me of mice. I was not sure if they do not not so I searched the net and say it is probable and can only be transmitted through a deep bite. The article says asking a vet would be best, but of course this would be if you already own it. The article also says do not play and or handle the hamster unless it is awake as it may awaken and bite. One is to wash hands after handling the hamsters. I do not think in my opinion it is wise to allow the baby to play with one yet as they will not know how to properly handle the hamster. Here is the link where I read that: http://www.ehow.com/facts_5784704_hamster-bites-human-disease.html I hope it helps.

Yup hamster and mice have much in common. But hamster is a lil cuter than mice. So it's only in a bite that we will be infected by hamster no airborne history? Yeah it's my baby hinder me from owning a hamster. Because I knew that she will like to have it.

Hi sorry for the late reply, I was a little busy. I did not noticed that you replied again . What I mean in the last sentence is that if my daughter will see the hamster I'm sure that she will want to play it and cry if i will not give it to her.

I don't think a hamster is very good idea, especially with any kids period. Many say hamster are starter pets, but I would never trust a child with an animal period. Hamster sleep during the day, and up all night. They can get out of their cage, they are very delicate, which means the child should not go near it, which is why they bite. You can't pick anything up from them, but you need to have a regular cleaning routine for their cages, dishes, and also with feeding. They need kay time as well, which many don;t realize which can reflect in their behaviour. I see many who get animals, and have kids, then when they get busy they get ride of them/.

I have five hamster as my pet, my boyfriend gave it to me. I conduct a research about how to my little hamham. According to my research hamster is not contagious and not an air born disease type. Hamster only bit when they get hurt. Baby's like cute animals, but hamster is not good pet for your baby cause you are right, your baby might squeeze it. If you really want to have a hamster. make sure that you are prepare to take care of it. Having hamster as a pet is too much expensive for me but it really worth it. My hamster ease my problem for a meantime when i'm watching them playing, eating, and when i'm playing with them. When you purchase a hamster please keep it out reach of your baby. For your baby's safety and for the hamster also.
