I agree with the first poster, tying up a dog is not good, but some people can't afford a fence, not only the materials, but the permit they have to get to put one up. I have two puppies and what I do, only one person here in the entire community of mylot thinks is cruel, but it isn't because how it is used..I also contacted a couple animals rights sites and they agreed that what I do is NOT cruel..
It is called a dog run and our yard is very long with a tree next to the house and many trees further back. In between there is nothing but grass. So we have a cable run from the tree next to the house to one of the trees in the back. Then a pulley is added and where we put the lead that we hook the dog to. This way my puppies can run the whole length of the yard, and yet not able to leave the yard. They are only on this dog run if they have to go do their business, they are not left out there all day long. They get exercise when they play together and when I take them on walks...

Hi There,
I would say it would be very difficult to keep a dog with out a fenced in area.A big dog needs a lot of room to run and be free.I think it is wrong to tie a Dog up all day. I would say if you lived in an apartment or a house with no Hedge, wall or fence then you would have only a lap dog that is happy to be inside most of the time.In NZ we have to have a fenced in area if we have a dog.

Thirty years ago when I had dogs we did not have a fenced yard and my dogs were kept outside on 100 foot chain's and were taken on daily walk's also. Some people's dogs are trained to certain boundaries.
In this day and age there is a more modern use of an underground electronic fence for the boundaries of the pet.The animal or animals wear a collar or collar's with a device in it,kind of like a remote that activates a slight shock on them when they attempt to exceed the boundary.
The shock is not dangerousto the dog and after awhile, they think,"Hmmm, everytime I go there something shocks me,so I think I won't go there anymore."

I live in the US and dont have a fence but I do have two little dogs. We live right by a very busy street and when I moved in I was very very nervous about it. I just taught my dogs that they are not to go past a certain point...they did not like training as it involved spankings, being tied up, and loss of treats. However, three years later and they can be let outside and I don't even have to watch them. They always go the other direction to do their business.

I have a fence around my yard and my dog usually stays in the yard unless he starts digging under the fence and wants to be a bad boy. We do go on walks and he is really good about that. I believe if you dont have a fence around the yard then you take the dog out on walks like alot of people do around the world, but of course there wouldnt be any place for the dog to run around except for in the house. I have a little dog and he stills runs around the house as well as in the backyard.

Well, it's a pretty common scene from where I am. There are just too many stray dogs on the street. They even mess the road you're walking on. The government though has a program to get rid of stray dogs especially those suspected to have rabis. But the campaign is not that effective because people got used seeing a lot of dogs on the streets and they somehow co-exist peacefully.

That is exactly whats happening from where I stay. Dogs are everywhere. And their waste is also everywhere. You just have to hope that you don't step on one. It is a shame that the owners do not care about their pet. Owners here do not treat dog as like a part of the family. They treat them as guards instead. I think that this is also OK but at least they should know on how to take of their dogs. Some dogs here are not being fed by their masters. It is a sad view.
