Smilling at everyone or anyone on the road......

I have this habit of smiling at people on the road even if i do not know them. I would always smile at vendors and turn them down politely with a smile if i do not want anything from their goods. One day a Man in his 50's and a National Charity Sweepstakes vendor came to me and sold some lottery tickets.I politely declined and said i was not interested and gave him a smile and walked away. After a few paces he came back running and said " Thank you for your smile miss, I have been selling these lottery tickets the whole day and with no luck....Your smile was the first one i go in my whole days work." and with out any other word to say he walked away. I was so stunned that i could not believe what i heard.Until today 20 years later i remember that day because i realized that even a simple smile can brighten a strangers gloomy day.
How do you feel when a stranger smiles at you? Nothing more just smiles and passes you by......

I like to have this habit and it will not work out nicely or end up with a pleasing result. Though this habit is not in our area and just smiling to others make more of complications. But I have noticed that people from US who visit our place and if I happens to pass over to them, whey would give a smile, especially, if I give a smile, they will definitely smile back and move away. I like this habit and I know they used to do in such a way.
If I smile to someone strangers on the roads, they will misunderstand and sometimes they will not give any response. Especially, if we do the same to girls or ladies, it is dangerous too. So, no smile is ok but just for a good habit, I continue to smile to someone, it will end up with unwanted scene would be the net result. Again, if a girl smiles to someone, I am sure that the guy will follow the girl or they will again misunderstand. So, in our area, a smile has such implications.
Thank-s

That is good information there...I will keep that into mind when i visit your place. You also correct there too that it is dangerous to smile to strangers and one could invite danger with just a smile because smiling and even looking straight in the eye can connote something and each culture has its variations on what to do or is acceptable to do.

Hi dear,
Thanks for the response. I just mentioned a common phenomenon with regards to the human nature and our psychology. Of course there are exceptions and not all are alike also. If we smile to someone, if he is a gentle and good mannered, they should realise that it is just because humane and no need to find any false implication on it. But if they feel that our smile has a different meaning or it is just a romantic smile, then the things turn around. Though it is good manner, people will thing in the other way, here we all are helpless and people may thing why need to attract unwanted nuisance.
Have a nice day and best regards,
Thank-s

For me it is hard if you are not smiling because you are about to ignore the things and appreciate the beauty to the kind of heart one.

Apparently other people have forgotten that smiling is also appreciating others existence and allows the person to take in the beauty that surrounds us in this world. It is a gift, i mean to smile because it does not cost anything to give,to receive or to respond to.Keep smiling ebuscat and have a wonderful day ahead of you!

I don't have the habit of smiling at strangers on the streets. However if vendors approach me, I would turn them down with a light smile.

On seeing your post , i remember about a girl. I don't know anything about her not even her name. I used to see her every day while i was going to college by bus. The college bus starts from my place so me and my stopmates used to be the first people to get on board and i usally sit on first seat on the right side near the window. It takes 20 minutes to go to our college. And on the way there is a traffic signal. To the side of the signal MAny school girls will standing for bus. There this cute little girl may be 13 or 14 years old, use to smile at me everyday while we pass through. And later i expect her smile everyday. If i didnt see her on any day, It felt like i missed something that day. 4 years continued like this and i got my degree . she is now studying in a college and we are good friends now.

That is such a lovely version of a smile story! I believe that there is good merit or call it Karma if you want with just smiling. It is like the law of attraction where we send forth good positive energy to the world and the world will open up pathways to goodness in return.

I say "hi" to many people, but not everyone. In general, I just smile, nod or lift my hand to wave to acknowledge them, but not necessarily actually say "Hi". If I walk in to a shop or walk up to a group of people, I always say, "Hi."
Why? Common courtesy. We live so deeply involved in our own little worlds that we forget to acknowledge others around us. And besides, it feels good!

True it really feels good when you realize that you are not alone in this huge cold world.Even a little nod and a response back can tell you you are connected in his vast sea of humanity .I believe that the smile you put forth warms every corner of your life.Much of people today has forgotten the courtesy you are showing and i am happy that you still keep it in you. Thank you for smiling and have a wonderful day ahead of you!

It is nice to know that more people are after all happier than most. Thank you for being so and doing so.It does take so little to smile or to say thank you or your welcome that our world seems to become more lighter with positivity. We live in an age of fear and distrust that even smiling has become an activity that is construed as with motive or vested interest that none would dare smile at a stranger now a days for fear of becoming a beacon of trouble.

OH, well, I would not refuse nor decline smiles especially coming from a beautiful face. Not just that, anybody who smiles including ugly ones, I would acknowledge him/her either with smile, hi, or welcome expression.
See, not very many people have a habit of smiling including me. More and more people need to smile including the ones that have beautiful faces.

Hi there! Your gesture was really one of a kind. It really makes anybody brighten up a gloomy day if you just give them a smile. I love it too when people smile at me especially those who seem to recognize me or those whom I have met once or twice in my school days. It makes a bad day into a good one knowing that a someone had just given you a smile or that you have given one too. What you did was really awesome especially for a vendor like him who has been working whole day in the heat of the sun.

I will be surprised when a stranger smiles at me because I'm not used to that. Maybe I'll have to get used to that. Maybe through the smile it will bring me good luck.

I think it's sweet when strangers smile! It shows that the human race can be friendly towards strangers and not gloomy and ignorant all the time!
