Locking on in Metal Gear Solid 4?

I just got my first PS3 and the first game I got with it was Metal Gear Solid 4. I have beaten the game already and still have no clue how to lock on. I have read that all you have to do is press square while aiming over the shoulder but it doesn't seem to work. I have also heard that there is n lock on feature in online games. Is that true?
