I have been living in US for 3 years and all I speak is English besides talking on the phone with my family. Sometimes I just can't think of the word in my native lanugage when I talk to my mom... I guess I have been here long... And I could get irritateed because I can't think of the certain word that I want to say... Have you ever been in this situation?

I have never been in this situation. It is probably vecause I have never been in another country long. I think you can talk to your family more or even teach your friends there your native language.

I get that way and I only know one language! *LOL* Though I do know bits and a phrase or two in a few other languages but nothing substantial where I could read items or carry on a conversation with someone who does not know English.

I have that problem too! I was born in Italy and did my first five years of schooling there. I speak fluent Italian but over the years since I’ve been living in Australia I have lost touch with the Italian language. The only people I speak Italian to are my parents and whenever I have to write anything I have to get the spelling checked by someone who speaks Italian. It is easy to forget part of your native language if you haven’t used it in a while.

Hi mermaidivy!!! It happens. But I have not really been in that situation. I am using three languages daily in my life. One is our native language and I use it in the family. Everyone in the family use this language. And when I am in the institution, I use the national language which is Nepali. And here in the mylot I am using English language. I may be fluent in writing in English, but If I need to speak in English, I am sure I will be in the identical situation like you mention. Yeah, it happens, but with practice, we can change recover it for sure... happy mylotting...

I think I scan speak English fluently but when it comes to writing like an article, I think I will have to sit down and really think how I can write it smoothly without having all the wrong grammars.

HI again mermaidivy!!! Thank god, mylot is not more concerned with the grammatical mistakes. Else I would be earning nothing from mylot :). While writing here in mylot, I am not much concerned, but I am doing the mylot task, then even I'll need to take the help of online grammatical correction software and sites lol.. Happy mylotting...

When I worked as a children's nanny in Finland I had to speak my home country's language slowly and clearly. I cared for three children. The family had three homes: a country farmhouse, a town house and a lakeside wood cabin. I left there without speaking English as well as I used to. It did come back to me in a couple of days. I traveled to Australia and began to sound like I had an Australian accent. It is interesting to see how well you are into life in the USA you are forgetting how to speak your native language.

Yes, I quite understand that. That can happen to any one too. To learn the language, the best way is to be in the environment and keep using the words and expressions. If one stays aloof from the environment, the language skills very quickly disappears.

Well, I still speak my language fluently, I just can't spit out some certain words that I am thinking.
