so i now know that dogs cannot process chocolate and could kill them, grapes and raisins may cause renal failure, and onions are indeed bad for them because they may suffer from hemolytic anemia (in other words, diarrhea, appetite loss, and general weakness. so what other foods could cause harm to our pet dogs? i definitely need to be informed about these, because we had been feeding our dog grapes and onions or foods with onions before i learned of these foods being similar to poison.. please share your knowledge mylotters. got a 3 year old dog here we consider as family.=)

I just wanted to let you know that Hemolytic anemia is the distruction of red blood cells. We feed our dogs just about anything and have never had and issue with them. I know there are alot of things they should eat but like I said we've never had a problem.

In my opinion dogs shouldn't be given human food but I have to admit I'm guilty of giving my mother's dog before she passsed, table scraps. I would just stick with meat because I know that their systems are somewhat like humans but not quite. Though this is a first for me to hear onions, grapes, and raisens can cause problems.

I had no idea of the grapes and onions and am glad you talked about this in your discussion. I guess i will be more careful when feeding the dog to make sure no onions will be in this and i used to give him grapes but he would play with them more than eat them but i wont be doing this anymore either. I consider my dog to be my child and my baby in life, he is like part of the family and loves us all and loves to just be with us all the time.
I would hate to see my dog go because i was feeding him the wrong food or something bad like that and i dont want it to be my fault at all.

Yeah lots of food that we eat we should not give to dogs because it's food that is meant for humans and not for dogs. That's why I get mad when my dad or mom gives my dog some human food especially the ones that aren't good for her they will give her bones and ice cream and so many others. I have finally convinced them to stop all that because i simply told them it would kill my dog.
That's when they stopped I guess since my mom and dad had dogs when they were young would feed them human food. They always said that the dogs enjoyed it, but their dogs didn't exactly live to long because of that. Dogs need to be fed dog food and should never be fed human food.

It is interesting how we think we are giving our pets a treat ut in fact we are poisoning them with our kindness. Another food source pets should not be given is meet from a pig. If you notice pet food flavours are beef, rabbit, fish, chicken, turkey, etc. but NEVER pork. I am not quite sure what the effect it has on animals but I was told by a vet years ago never to give pork, bacon or anything else that came from a pig to animals.
