The results of the 2010 Nurses Licensure Exam was recently released. I found out that the national passing rate is at 35.26 percent. What do you think is the implication of this? Is it good, because the Board of Nursing has devised a way to filter out only the "qualified and deserving" people to be given the much coveted PRC license for nurses? Or is it bad, because our nursing schools are not meeting up to the standards of producing "qualified" graduates who aim to be future nurses? By the way, CONGRATULATIONS to those who passed! And for those who didn't make it, be strong. This is only one of your many challenges. Always remember, there is no problem bigger, greater, and much more powerful than your God.

If the intention is to see that only quality candidates pass the exam,i feel its a fine move on the part of the authorities. When only people with quality and who are deserving pass the exam, automatically the quality of nurses at the hospital will improve.I have many a time heard people who have been in hospital criticise the quality of nursing. This step will be a good beginning to improve nursing care at hospitals.

honestly, i think so too. =] i think a harder licensure exam somehow increases the standard of nurses who are to serve the community. but i also do believe that this exam is not a measure of the totality of ones potential as a nurse. it could be that other factors may have been the cause of someone failing this exam (like stress, fear, heightened anxiety, and illness during the actual examination). Do you agree picjim? =]

I accept that ill health, nervousness exam fear and several other factors could play a role in not performing well at exams. But i feel that is a flaw in the system, if the person due to the reasons mentioned in your reply isn't performing up to expectations. The teachers and the system ought to make sure that those who have this difficulty are made to overcome their fears. There ought to be continued evaluation instead of one exam where ones entire future is being evaluated. Those who fall ill ought to be given a chance to write the exam at a later date. This implies that people can take tests at different dates.

As for my opinion, that is still a good number. I mean, where will you put those passers? As a volunteer? Many Registered nurses shifts with profession because they are not earning income. They tend to flee because they are jobless here.

Yes. That's the common tendency for new registered nurses in our country. And i think its a good step by the Board of Nursing to regulate the number of new nurses every year. We are overflowing with very qualified nurses but we lack workplaces where they could go. Agree? =]

I think Nursing Board has taken the step to make the exams a lot difficult, so as to screen those most qualified ones. As of now, there are a lot of nursing graduates who are employed in other jobs not in line with nursing. It is said that the supply of nurses is already overflowing. In this regard, there is a need to regulate the nursing profession, lest we will be flooded with unemployed nursing graduates. Yes, congratulations to those who passed, to those who didn't try again next year. Meantime, make yourselves productive, find a job.

Yes, I totally agree. News says that more and more schools are producing unqualified BSN graduates (students = money, irregardless of quality)which is why the CHED takes on steps to close these institutions. I know you can relate so much with this because you are from the Philippines too. And the sight of registered nurses working in call centers most commonly is a very natural matter for us already. So maybe, its just about time that the number of registered nurses be regulated by the Board. =]
