why do things get darker when they get wet

once i accidentaly spillt some clear water on my white sleeve.it became dark gray.then i purposly spilled water on my lemon t-shirt,it became realy dark yello,kinda gray-ish.thats realy annoying me,also when in school a drop of water falls on my clothes and its like ive been rolling in ashes or something.anyone got an answer

I'm not fully sure of my answer but...
I believe that when water soaks into materials, it increases the density.
This can lead to a change in color.
However, I do not think that everything gets darker when water is put on it.
For example, paint turns into a lighter shade when in contact with water.
