Sweet Potatoes French Fries - Make them at home!
Canada

Ive never met anyone who didnt like French Fries. I LOVE them and I could eat it all the time...but we all know its not that good for your health. Im not talking here about frozen French Fries.....those are NOT FF in my book. Im talking about the real thing and trust me, some restaurants here still offer the real thing versus the frozen ones like you find at McD's. I saw this on tv where they say that sweet potatoes are very GOOD for you and they make delicious fries. You simply cut them, add bit of oil, put them on a cookie sheet and pop in the oven at 400 for about 15-20 mins and VOILA!! Delicious, sweet fries. So what do you do for the love of fries? Do you still eat them and feel guilty or did you find something else to replace them?

I would rather have tater tots or tater gems, or even hash browns with gravy. I want sausage in mine, please.

You two have weird tastes when it comes to fries LOL....(joking) @ CHER: Im in Canada and I live in the province of Quebec, the birthplace of "poutine" and I cant eat that. I dont like it at all. I wouldnt mind if it didnt have the cheese in it. Fries with gravy is ok but no cheese!! Some do it with spaghetti sauce and cheese over the fries.....my Italian grandparents must be turning in their graves about that one LOL. Thanks!!

Hubby likes french fries, but I do not. My son does not. I enjoy the curly ones that some restaurants sell. I do like onion rings and onion petals. I like tater tots. I have bought frozen sweet potato fries but now the stores do not have them. I have not made them in the oven yet, but I would do that. My favorite potato is to cook it in the microwave. I will do that rather than make a sandwich for a meal. It does not take any longer to fix than a lot of those boxed frozen meals that people like to buy. I will also microwave my sweet potato.

I think where I live we only get sweet potatoes and not yams. I would not be able really to tell the difference.

i love onion rings. some restraunts just don't know how to cook them right. I personally don't like sweet potato. yams are the best though. I haven't tried making french fries with yams, if that is even possible. have you ever tried it?

@ GG: you're lucky if you dont like FF. I crave them sometimes and since I like the greasy type, its not very good health wise! I dont think we have yams here either, so I dont know if they cook the same as sweet potatoes. I never buy frozen or boxed potatoes...always fresh ones. I know of a recipe where you cut your potatoes as if you're going to boil them but instead of filling up the pot with water, you use olive oil to cover the potatoes, so they are drowned in olive oil and you let them simmer gently. You'd think they would taste greasy but they dont. You end up with delicious, moist potatoes. You can then sift your oil and use it again. @ Lizzy: I love onion rings also and theres only one restaurant who makes them the way I like them. So Ive decided to make my own now and when family comes over, they want my onion rings......so I put them all to work because its a lot of work. Id try it with yam...try it with one to start. Thanks both of you!

No, French fries are French fries... no substitution here. However, one thing I must say is that the concept of FF has come to India only recently thru McD and before that, there were only select places that had FF as part of ‘continental’ menu! What we had and continue to have is a slimmer cousin of the FF... namely potato fritters. It’s a part of our comfort food and quick solution too... like when there is little else to go with the rice, we’ll just thinly slice nice potatoes and deep fry them and they come out really crisp and so tasty!

No, its just plain potatoes for us. Actually the concept of fried sweet potatoes is just not there in our eating habits...sweet potatoes are either curried or made into sweets. I've never had sweet potato fritters or FF with them

We have think FF here too, not sure if they call is that or not. I call them skinny FF lol. Im going to sound like an idiot now but I honestly thought that you could get FF anywhere in the world!!! Maybe now that you have McD over there you'll start putting on weight now!! Im curious to know if you have sweet potatoes or just plain potatoes?

Magical- I cannot lie, I adore sweet potatoe fries. However, since starting the Atkin's meal plan we've had to give them up for now. I can't say that I've missed them as much as I thought, but I do my cauliflower up in place and have been honestly figuring out if I can make anything work like fries that isn't so carb loaded! @ Anora: You cant have potatoes on the atkins. Ive been told and I will try this over the weekend that cauliflower can be cooked in the oven until crisp and apparently its simply DELICIOUS!! So my guess is you dont have to miss your sweet potato fries! @ Jenne: They taste delicious...sweet as the name says. Its very easy to do. Buy sweet potatoes, peel them, cut them up in thin strips, put them in a bowl, pour a bit of olive oil and toss, you can also add salt, pepper, spices if you want. Then lay on a cookie sheet and bake at 425F for about 15 mins. Let me know if you try it and if you like it!! Thanks!

Hi there! I LOOOVE french fries! i eat them almost everyday, everytime i eat outside, or when i'm studying for an exam. I get them at McD's and other local fastfoods. Oftentimes, i buy frozen fries from the grocery and cook them myself. Of course i've read about some bad stuff about fries which makes me feel guilty sometimes but i haven't seen the bad results yet so i don't think i'd be replacing them. I also don't have an oven at my apartment so i fry them with olive oil. Too much grease is a pain but what i do is that after i fry them, i put them in a bowl with a table napkin. That way, the tissue can absorb the grease from my fries. Happy eating!

Hello! You're right, you let the paper towel absorb the grease and then your fries are healthy and taste delicious. If you have access to sweet potato, they come in the frozen section, you should try them. They are delicious! Thanks!

I love french fries regardless of how they come and eat them any way they come. I love thick french fries skinny french fries and potato chips. Yum! Now they have sweet potato fries at Hardee's but those don't sound to appealing to me. Give me plain ole salt and ketchup and call me Happy. I wonder who doesn't love french fries too? When I have a recap in my memory of the high school cafeteria all of my peers and their peers had fries.

I love potatoes any way they come, and I don't believe it when they say Potato is not good for you, I think potato and bread is the way of life...There is a very old TV star who is in her 80's who said on a talk show that she lives on chips and hotdogs, so sometimes I think the health experts are just too harsh.

I agree with you lilaclady, Potatoes are healthy, provided you eat them in small portions. I think that they got a bad reputation, because they are starchy which can ruin your diet if you need to loose weight. Also if you eat french fries and they are made with the right fat they are healthy too, again provided you don't overdo it. By the way any vegetable you put in water too cook it, becomes more acidic thus turns out to be less good for you. So french fries cooked in the right fat are not at all unhealthy.

I agree with both of you when you say potatoes are healthy and good for you. The problem is our minds....we have been told over and over that potatoes are fattening and we believe it unconsciously!! I too could live on meat and potatoes lol. Thank you both for sharing with me!

I love eating French fries. I only get to eat it every once in a while so I think it wont affect my health in a bad way. I can now also cook French fries in my own home so I can eat French fries whenever I want. I always crave for fries. But I think eating in moderation should always be kept in mind.

Sorry it took me so long to reply. Well at least you didnt miss eating them while you were preggo. Ive found a few on here who dont like FF. I sort of envy them. I crave them often but resist eating them because its fattening. No matter what we try to tell ourselves, it IS fattening lol. Happy your appetite for FF is back. I'll have them at least once a week. Thanks for replying!!

hmm...I've never tried making sweet potato french fries...I might try that soon! This place by my house cooks fries in peanut oil, which apparently is healthier! its tasty! =] you're right, frozen fries aren't the same. they're mushy, unless you own a deep fryer. which most people, excluding my friend's father, don't have a deep fryer.

You need to try sweet potatoes FF soon and I bet you're going to love them. I do mine in the oven. I have a deep fryer but why use frozen fries when its so easy to make fresh ones. Thanks!

I never regretted eating French fries! (Well of course, it's a food) I love those fresh ones and I usually dip it in ketchup! Tasty and the classical way of eating fries! I haven't tried sweet potatoes yet though. I would love to try it sometime. by the way, those frozen French fries might not be as delicious as the fresh ones, but it's worth it too! French fries all the way!

French fries are the number one killer of my diet. I just can resist them. They are just too tempting. I do try to eat something else or cook them in a healthier way but nothing beats deep fried, crispy fries with ketchup. Yummy! I have read where if you eat a lot of fast food fries you will get cancer. Anyone know about this? Anyway I do love them. I love sweet potato fries and fried Yucca (Peruvian).

I havent heard that about fries and cancer. If you listen to all they say, it sounds like everything can make you sick lately. I eat what I like and what makes me feel good. So I'd say, if you like them...eat them. You're right, theres nothing like deep fried haha!! Now Im the one craving them!! Thanks!
28 Apr 11
Oh how I LOVE French Fries! I could eat them all day. But sadly, I've heard that 1 stick of fries is equivalent to 10 calories. So if i eat 50 sticks of these, i get 500 calories. Like wooaahh! That's too many calories to burn. But it wont stop me from eating more fries. Haha! I do exercise and play volleyball a lot just to burn up this calories. I don't feel guilty at all eating them. I've even influenced my boyfriend from eating fries every time we have a date. :))

I don't care for French Fries. Order some unsalted and you would not like the taste either. This will tell you that you are eating the fries for the salt, and if for some reason your kidneys can't eliminate enough sodium,(salt) the sodium starts to accumulate in your blood. Because sodium attracts and holds water, your blood volume increases. Increased blood volume makes your heart work harder to move more blood through your blood vessels, which increases pressure in your arteries. Such diseases as congestive heart failure, cirrhosis and chronic kidney disease can make it hard for your kidneys to keep sodium (salt) levels balanced.

Im one who doesnt put salt on my fries.......honest!! I can have them nature as it is and still like it. I love potatoes, boiled, fried, oven baked. I even use unsalted butter because my husband had a stroke 4 yrs ago and I had to learn to cook with not much salt. I must have been doing something right because his BP is way down now Yay me!! You sound like you like salt. Take it one day at a time and use herbs instead, you'll get over it in no time. Thank you for sharing that much information!!

I love French Fries but my husband don't. I don't know why he does not even bother to eat French Fries. He would try a stick or two and after that he does not have the appetite for it anymore. But as for me I love French Fries and would fry it the healthy way so while I enjoy them my health does not suffer.

I love french fries so much. I know it is not good for health but i still love it and i even don't care whether it's frozen french French Fries or not. Every time i go McD, i will order a large set just because of french fries. And i really can't get something else to replace it. I only can compare McD french fries with other brand.
